Wow! this brings back memories....
Battleship (not technically a board game but a fav nonetheless-top pick, I think!)
Monopoly, ;) was ALWAYS about location, location, location!
Sorry
Connect Four
(trivial pursuit as I got older)
we also had:
dominoes
checkers
cards (old maid, yes, I am embarrased but we had it and used it a lot.)
and pick up sticks--remember those?
yes, I'm old. :)

*edited to add:
While many of these games I've listed are NOT technically board games, they WERE the source of quite a few disagreements during competition.

My brother and I always fought over checkers.

Risk - my favorite board game ever.
My sister and I used to fight over who got to be the dog when we played Monopoly.

Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble..... you name it... I was always accused of memorizing the answers to Trivial Pursuit and making up words in Scrabble when I was winning - standard procedure for my brothers lol. They're really bad losers.

Monk: The scottie dog was MY piece. Nobody else was allowed to touch it. Used to play a lot with my dad (whoa, that's going back a ways) and he'd always win. Called himself "The Great Monopolo".
Mom is the Queen of word games (Scrabble, Boggle, Spill & Spell)--love to play these with her because it's always a full-contact sport
Nanny and I used to adore Connect Four. Played it every chance we got :D

:foh: Wow - Avalon, reading that was like being transported back in time. Those are almost exactly the same words my sister said to me everytime we got ready to play.

Did your sister like to put the little top hat on the dog? Because I absolutely had to do that each time, too. Still do :bigredblu

I wouldn't let her because I usually ended up being the hat. :dis:

:rotfl: Does that ever sound familiar!
And my husband claims the racing car, but I want the top hat in Monopoly (at least when I'm broke I can pass around the hat)! That game always ends up in fun fights.

my kids fight over Trouble ALL the time. But they call the game Ut-Oh.
Of course, my kids fight over everything-even who gets to throw the dirty diapers away! HA

HA HA HA HA! While this sounds familiar, I drew the line at getting what I wanted.. If I didn't get the dog, I would bring in something "from the outside"...
I've always been one to color outside the box... and an action like that always spurned more argument about the legitimacy of like a piece of Bazooka gum! lol
