You're just saying that because you can't hear the "tone" in the written word  or so I'm told whenever I think I know what tone a poster is trying to convey. As far as internet landlords go, you're better than a lot I've seen.
BTW, my kitchen light fixture is broken, any chance you could fix that? http://mysticwicks.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Kitchen light, eh? Need to replace the ballast or what? =P
Ok, folks. I did some server tuning. Actually, that's not correct...I changed some of our vb settings. I turned off the similar thread option, which most of you probably never looked at anyway...I also changed it so that thread and attachment views are only updated once an hour. So, if you post a thread and look at it 30 minutes later and 3 people have posted in it, but the thread views still say 0 then that's why. It saves server resources.
I also implemented a server load limit. From now on if the server gets overloaded you might be met with a message that says "Server Too Busy - Try Again Later". This is temporary until I can figure out how to limit the number of guests only.
Other than that, I am going to be upgrading the server software again to see if we can squeeze a few more months out of this server. Right now money is tight on my end. MW is my only income and the server bills take a large chunk of that on top of getting through this divorce thing, etc. So, please be patient and I promise I will stay on top of this to minimize any more downtimes.
Love!

That a good idea, but now I am finding that it is actually the spiders moving through the threads too fast. I am setting a delay so all the search engines and spiders will have to wait 20 seconds between views. Lets see what happens!

A shame you can't redirect all the spiders to a single web or net. I'm not sure how online spiders operate.
Hmm. When I was younger, I used to have "pet" funnel spiders in the juniper bushes in the backyard. I'd feed them grasshoppers and other bugs now and again. I don't suppose you could devise something that feeds spiders to slow them down with some tasty morsels of your own choosing?

Hehe...well, I think I have it figured out. The delay seems to be working. The load on the server is down quite a bit....actually, WAY down...it's very nice. So, let's keep our fingers crossed.

Assuming the vast majority of guests are spiders, a crawl-delay directive in the robots.txt file does just fine.
Heck, if you only did it for the Slurp Agents, your problems would decrease 10-fold. Yahoo is running amok lately and it's affecting quite a few boards out there. From what I've seen, they launch so many requests so quickly, then end up forking enough apache child processes that one of two things happen; The server starts dropping requests, or the CPU load gets high enough that the machine just tanks.

And for those of us who aren't computer literate, the Alta Vista Babelfish translator translated the above from Techinese to English, and came up with:
