In real life, what does your name mean. If you don't want to give out your real name, that's fine...but ...please give the meanings.

I have no problem, with it, however..so here it is.

My First name is Jean, and it means several things..."God is Gracious", "Talented", "Gifted", and my Middle name is Carol, which means song of joy. Interesting, then, that I've always been a singer:)

Interestingly enough...my Fathers, and Brothers as well as my own first name, are all derivitives of eachother in Gaelic. John, Shawn, Jean. They all mean the same thing.

My last name (which I won't give out), means "Dweller in a Hazel Valley"

My first name = Michelle - means "Who is like God" (so on your knees, humans! lol!)

my middle name (currently) = Luna - Roman goddess of the moon (I said, get on your knees!)

The one I was given at birth, which I subsequently changed for personal reasons = Lynne, meaning "lake", also considered shortened form of Linda, meaning "beautiful"

my last name (maiden name which I won't give out, but some may be able to guess) refers to the tribe of Norsemen who took over the British Isles for a time.

Some theory says that you take on seven characteristics of your name. I named my oldest Aaron, which means Prince or Priest. He thinks he is God. The second one is Adam, "Man of Red Earth." He thinks he's macho man, all right. And the youngest is Jesse. It means "Wealthy." He has always had money. And mine means "gifts from God." I have had many, but not always the kind I would like!

umm.. someone already took my first name!

Michelle: feminine form of Micheal "who is like God" (same as Lunamoth, of course) I've never really been cool with the "feminine of Michael" thing, can't I just have a name that stands on its own?? oh well.

Anne: French, German, English form of 'Hannah' (/such/ a pretty name!) which is Hebrew for "favor" or "grace" cool beans. Must be favor in my case cause I'm /not/ graceful.

Farrell: (how excited am I about this?) from the Irish, Ó Fearghail, which is "descendant of Fearghal" Fearghal means "man of valor" and was an 8th century king of Ireland! whooohoo!!! That is pretty exciting.

I think I'm going to go call my papa and see if he knows any more about what our name means! Great thread!!

Epona44

It means "Oath of God."

In one book it means "Promise of God."

My middle name Eileen, is a derivative of Eibhlin from the Gaelic.

That derives from Emeline, Germanic, meaning "Work."

Or a French Avaline, meaning "bird" derived from Latin Avis, from a Germanic word which has an unknown meaning.

These meanings came from the suggested website: www.behindthename.com

Mine is easy to interpret. I have hippy parents....

I won't post my name, but..

My first name is a feature of nature. Like Brook or Tree.
My 1st middle name is a color.
My 2nd middle name is my Grandmother's name, after a flower.
My 3rd middle name is part of a mantra. Like "Om mane padme hum".
My 4th middle name is my maiden last name, a German word meaning "farmer".
My married last name is common, it's sort of a description of a person, like Baker or Carpenter.

Easy, huh? :)

A note on interpreting last names.

If you have European or Anglo-saxon origins, interpreting your last name, may be easier than you think.

For instance, if you have a "son" as in "Donaldson, Richardson", it means that the origin of your last name, was to link one of your ancestors to a specific person. Donalds Son.

Also. If you have an O' as a prefix to your last name..."O' Reilly, O'Malley" it means "Of", as in ...Child of...or of the clan of. It could also mean "Of the place of"....such as "O'shannon"....which would be of Shannon (the town, or near the river shannon).

If you have "Mac" as in "Mac Arthur", it is close to the same meaning as "O'"

Also...people often adapted their Job title as a last name. Such as "Hooper". This would be someone who made the iron hoops on wooden barrels. Or "Brewer" ...pretty obvios..someone who made beer. Tanner, someone who made leather clothing, or shoes.

People were also often named after the place that their ancestors were from. So that may give you a hint. Also..look for root words.

For instance, my husbands last name is "Felice" which in other languages, would be "Felicity" , "Feliz" etc. So....he always assumed it meant..."Happy". Not far off...it's actually a title given in Italy, to children who were born out of wedlock. "Child of a Happy Time".

In my case..the name which means "Dweller in a Hazel Valley" has a rather complex root. In reading Celtic Histories, I discovered that during the Highland Wars, and during the Scottish Rebellions, Certain factions fled Scotland, to areas in Ireland, England, and beyond. Often, to escape being found, they would change their names. And they would often adopt the name of the place where they settled. My ancestors, apparently to avoid the long arm of the Crown....settled in Ireland, in a Hazel valley. Thus adopting the name. The same would go for people with the last name "Hopper" according to my studies. From the term..."Bog Hopper", Someone who lived in marshy lands. And thus..the same with people with a last name of "marsh".

It is also a good idea, when researching your name, to try to translate it into differen't dialects. For instance, there is a name in my family line..."Torrence". Upon further study, it was revealed that it referred to a body of water...and is similar to the meaning of the word..."Brooke". It would be neat, if I could trace my lineage back far enough (So far, I know that that specific line was Scot-Irish, coming from County Derry, Ireland, and perhaps originating in Lanark, Scotland)...to the "Torr" of Avalonian fame.

Don't go putting us in our graves yet *wink* *lol*. My great aunt works for the Indian B. of Internal Affairs. My name is Gregory. I looked it up on the web and the following is what I found:

Your name of Gregory makes you quick-minded, versatile, and very expressive. You are adaptable and creative in responding to new situations. This name has given you an interest in people and a desire for new experiences. You have the ability to create a favorable first impression, and so you could do well in the fields of sales promotion or entertainment. The use of this name creates a lack of stability in your affairs as it inclines you to procrastinate. It spoils patience and weakens your stand in matters of principle. You are inclined to do whatever is expedient in order to avoid facing issues. You could suffer bitter experiences through attracting wrong types of association and can be drawn into circumstances involving you in unwise situations. Weakness in your health would come through emotional disturbances and tension affecting the nervous system. Nervous indigestion and disorders in the fluid functions could result.

"watchful, alert" from Greek gregoros

Latin Watchman

Probably not quite what you wanted, but...

I also have an old Christian name card thing around here somewhere that I really wanted to find. It has my favorite definition. I only remember some key words though. The parts I remember are:

and since I only know the full names of my grandparents on my mother's side...

Ready for this....Katy Beth....that's it no frills, no fuss. However, makes it a pain to determine meanings.

Katy.....a pet name for Kate......which is the short form of Katherine. *shakes head* Now Katherine apparently means this:

From the Greek name Aikaterine. The etymology is debated: it could derive from the earlier Greek name Hekaterine, which came from hekateros "each of the two"; it could derive from the name of the goddess HECATE; it could be related to Greek aikia "torture"; or it could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name". The Romans falsely derived it from Greek katharos "pure" and changed their spelling from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.
*grins* I am as complex as my name!

Middle name is Beth....short form of Elizabeth....which means "oath of God"

*shrugs* Who knows about the last name, German I think.

Well different sites keep giving me totally different answers about my name so lets try this again:

Quinn- Wise, From the Irish surname Ó Cuinn, which means "descendent of Cuinn", and fifth (which comes up most often)

makes me sound like a wise bottle of alcohol who is part of the O Cuinn family. hehe damn that is pretty Irish

my Middle name is Marie which is the French form of Mary:

"The meaning of this popular name is not known for certain, but there are several theories: "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child" (Hebrew). However it is most likely an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved"

my last name is Greek and means horse lover (should have been goat lover!)

Several theories. It could be related to the first name CEALLACH or the surname derived from it Ó Ceallaigh. Or it might be
related to a Pictish word meaning "wood" or "holly". As a surname, this name has belonged to actor and dancer Gene Kelly
and actress Grace Kelly.
(CEALLACH m Irish
Possibly "war, strife" from Gaelic ceallach, or possibly deriving from a Gaelic word meaning "bright-headed". ) (I AM rather on the smart side. LOL)

MIGNON f French
"darling" (French). This is the name of a character in Ambroise Thomas's opera 'Mignon', which was based on a novel by

Don't know what the last names Grantham (maiden) or Steadham (Married) mean

the suffix "Ham" might derive from the word "Hamlet" which in countries like Britain was a tract of land, like a city. It is possible that Grantham and Steadham were possibly area's of land under the control of people by the names Grant, and Stead, or something like that. But this is all conjecture.

Ann is a form of the Hebrew 'Hannah' which means 'grace.' Rebecca I don't recall. The most I remember is that she was the wife to Isaac in the bible and created the situation where Esau was hornswoggled out of his inheiritance as eldest by his brother Jacob. But before that she ended up on Sunnybrook Farm teaching everyone the 'glad' game. She used to date Tom Sawyer in Hannibal , MO. She was married to a US president but I don't remember which one--I wanted to say Andrew Johnson. Oh she was the healer in Ivanhoe. Later in life she managed a bar named Cheers in Boston and fooled around with a guy named Sam Malone. How she ended up with Isaac after Sam Malone I don't know but she was the mother of Esau and Jacob.

Good luck

Hmmmmm..wonder if that might come from the "Adriatic Sea" or share some common root word?

Babynames.com is one of the most extensive sites you could find for first and middle names. However, if you know that your name derives from a specific culture, you might just want to run a search for naming patterns in that country. In other words..type in..."Naming Patterns + Ireland" or "Common Baby Names + Ireland" if your roots are irish. Etc.

For Surnames, there are HUNDREDS of Surname finders all over the web. Both on Geneology sites, and Coats of Arms Sites. I cannot recall which site exactly had such wonderful info on my name. But I do know that if you go to ancestry message boards (ancestry.com, geneology.com, rootsweb.com), and type in your surname interest, you will be able to find message boards in many cases, where other people are looking for info about the same name. And sometimes, they might be able to clue ya in.

Let me see if I can find a good site....

Here ya go.

I have noooo idea what my name means, I can't find it anywhere. LOL. The reason my name is Bree is cause my mom was reading Tolkein when she was pregnant with me. She actually wanted Dara Marie, but my dad said nope.. we're goin with Bree Nicole. I don't know what Nicole means either. It was great watching The Lord of the Rings in the theater.. cause every time they mentioned the town Bree, I would squeel and whistle. LOL

The funniest "How I got my name story", to me, is where my sister Shay got her name. She was supposed to be a boy. When she came out... nope.. wasn't a boy. So they had to think of a name. So my dad said, "How about Shay Yvonne?" (Yvonne is my moms middle name). So my mom said sure, cause she liked it. Later on, she asked my dad where he came up with that. Turns out the October 1972 Playboy Playmate's name was Shay. LOL My sister Cimarron got her name from the John Wayne movie, The Cowboys. My parents loved it, even though it's technically a male name. I've heard it means Wild and Untamable. I could be wrong though.

My name's Samantha tho I never accually found out what it means... on babynames.com, it says it means listener, but on behindthename.com, it says: SAMANTHA f English
Perhaps an invented name intended to be a feminine form of SAMUEL. It is sometimes claimed to mean "listener" in Aramaic, but then again ,I heard that it wasnt true...
My mom did name me after Samantha, the witch, on Bewitched, well, not exactly AFTER her, but thats where she got the name. And I always associated it with the magical world and with witches when I was young. I found a few books that said it was related to it, but it usually says that the origin and meaning aren't clear or that their are unknown (it makes it a little mysterious, doesn't it! ;) ) ... So, thats pretty much anything I know about my name!
Well, my last name means priest or something like that in arabic(it's libanese). and my other last name I've no idea (that one's Greek).

Heather's spelling suggests the place where you might find the plant -- the rugged heath. However, the plant name evolved in Scotland while the name for the scrubby plain evolved in the south of Britain. In Scotland heather is found on the moor, not on the heath. On the heaths of England and Wales, you'll find a plant called ling, not heather.

Marie:
a Hebrew name meaning "Wished-for child

The original Miryam of the Hebrew scriptures was sister to Moses and Aaron. Some scholars believe her name, and those of her brothers, could have originated in the ancient Egyptian language, and that their meanings are lost. Others offer alternate interpretations, including ''rebellion'' and ''sea of bitterness.''

Various forms derived from Miryam -- Latin Maria developed into French Marie, then English Mary. Among Christians, they are venerated as the name of the mother of Jesus Christ. St. Jerome associated the Virgin's name with the Latin phrase stella maris (''star of the sea''), and this can be regarded as yet another meaning that inspired the widespread use of so many forms of this name.

I posted here forever and a day ago, but I found out that my grandpa was adopted since then so...
first- a source of joy
middle- who is like God (fem, version of my dad's name)
last - manly strength (or) super choice

what my last name would have been if grandpa hadn't been adopted
one who lived at a ridge or range of hills.

oh I also hate my middle name. I wish my mom would have just manipulated my father's middle name. Then my middle name could be Leona (lion, I am a leo). Then again, I'm glad she didn't, cause then my initials would be ALF. No way I'd live that down. :tongueout:

First
DIANA f English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Roman Mythology
Pronounced: die-AN-a
Probably derived from an old Indo-European root meaning "heavenly, divine", related to dyeus (see ZEUS). Diana was a Roman goddess of the moon, hunting, forests, and childbirth, often identified with the Greek goddess Artemis
On the northern shores of Lake Nemi, Diana's Mirror, in Italy, stood the sacred grove and sanctuary of the Goddess Diana.

The Goddess Diana, is the Huntress and Goddess or fertility, childbirth and the wild woodlands and associated with the constellation of Ursa Major. She is also associated with fire festivals, her title Vesta, indicates a perpetual holy fire in her sanctuary. Her annual festival, held on August 13th, where she is invoked to protect the harvest from autumn storms, is the middle of summer, when the sun is at its hottest. Diana is often depicted holding a torch, a symbolic reminder of the fiery nature of the Goddess.

SEÁN m
Usage: Irish
Pronounced: SHAWN
Irish form of JOHN

so then I take John and it means:

JOHN m
Usage: English, Biblical
Pronounced: JAHN
English form of Johannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Ioannes, itself derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". This name owes its consistent popularity to two New Testament characters, both highly revered as saints. The first was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ, who was beheaded by Herod Antipas. The second was the apostle John who was also supposedly the author of the fourth Gospel and Revelation. The name has been borne by 23 popes, as well as kings of England, Hungary, Poland, Portugal and France. It was also borne by the poet John Milton and the philosopher John Locke.

Next my middle name Michael:

MICHAEL m
Usage: English, German, Czech, Biblical
Pronounced: MIE-kul
From the Hebrew name Miyka'el which meant "who is like God?". This was the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers. This was also the name of nine Byzantine emperors and a czar of Russia. Other more modern bearers of this name include the 19th-century chemist/physicist Michael Faraday and basketball player Michael Jordan.

Definition: 1) An occupational name for a "guard or watchman," from Old English "weard" = guard. 2) A geographical name for a person who lived near a guardhouse or fortress.

This was the name of the wife of Otto the Great, and also the wife of King William IV of England. A city in Australia bears this name. (I have a nice picture done up of my name that has the meaning of it written as "One of noble descent")

Middle name Lynn derived from an English surname which derives from Welsh llyn "lake". It can also be a short form of LINDA or names which end in lyn or line.

Maiden last Patton is either a pet form of PATRICK or else from a surname which meant "bald" in Middle English. George S. Patton was an American general during World War II who played an important part in the allied offensive in France. (I am related to the General)
