I have never seen it nor ate any of it. But it is a spread of sorts,
that sounds disgusting. Not really well known in america.
Excellent for catching TWINKS, (she swears by the stuff!) but
Old Witch said it was horrible(she bravely volunteered to find and
taste it!) Also, it may be similar to vegemite, but I am not sure.
There are threads on it you could search and they probably give
a better description. Dang long response for marmite, neh?

Marmite? It is the french word for cauldron, that I know.

But I don't know if this is what you are asking.

Marmite is, and I am quoting from the jar, " Yeast extract...contains B vitamins. !00% vegetarian" From the back of the jar, among other things "Ingredients Yeast extract, salt, carrot and onion extracts, spice extracts. Enriched with niacin, thiamin hydrocloxide, riboflavin, folic acid and vitamin B something or other" On a personal note, It looks like congealed axel grease, smells like I don't know what, and tastes like the worst thing you could ever imagine..........Blech!!!!!!!!!!!!. Why did I keep the jar of it then, you ask? Because I might have reason to poison someone someday!!!!!!!!!!!! This stuff is awful beyond words!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MHO

Vegemite is a close cousin to Marmite........I wasn't brave enough to try it after the Marmite..............

I've eaten both & they are different but are both horrible. As Old Witch said, good for poisoning someone with! Blech! As someone said in another thread, the stuff tastes like the gooey green stuff between a sasquatch's toes!

I'd send you mine, but I'd probably be arrested for sending poison thru the mail. If you really are so masochistic that you would want to taste the stuff, try a British specialty shop. Thats where I found mine.

Merry met
Vegemite is the Australian version of Marmite (and in my biased opinion tastes much better)

They are both yeast extracts, which are quiet salty but are very healthy with lots vitamin B in them

The reason most people who try it hate it is that they spread it an inch thick over their bread - that makes it taste like ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

If you want to try it spread it at about 1mm thickness or less on fresh bread - its yummmm

I will agree that it looks like axle grease tho - my grandpa used to reckon he used it for that when he couldnt get the real stuff lol

merry part
enjoy!

See, now you're talking my language!!

and btw, Old Witch, I'm definitely not going to go looking for it, I'm not THAT masochistic (only a little  ), but I guess, being a classically trained chef, I'd have to taste it... it's gotta be better than eating something like brains - eeewwwwwwww.

Old Witch
January 18th, 2002, 12:54 PM
Nope, I've had brains. WE southeners will eat any thing once. Next to Marmite, brains is (are?) world class cuisine!!!!!!
