We are new to Wicca, can you tell us why we seem to see "witches" wearing black clothing? Do different colors represent different rituals? What is a webring? What is the meaning of silver jewelry if any?(verses gold). Thank you for any help.

Black is all colors, and no color. Everything and nothing.

It seems to us that earthtone colors would be more appropriate. Are we putting to much stock in colors? Can you suggest a good beginers web site or book?

Colors are colors, I normally wear blue jeans and t-shirts. You wear what you feel comfortable in. As for silver jewlery, I think it represents the moon, anyway its cheaper. i have yet to meet a rich pagan.
Keep asking questions, there's never a stupid one here.
PS as for good books, i just read S.Cunningham's Wicca for the solitary practitioner. It was great, very general but one of the first things you have to learn is thinking for yourself, no one should be preaching to you.

Silver is considered by some to be a correspondence to the Goddess, and Gold the God...
I have to agree about Scott Cunningham... Most of his books are excellent for beginners. The first book I read on Wicca was "The Witches' Bible Compleat" by Janet and Stewart Farrar. It is a hard read, and about Gardnarian wicca, but has good information.

Merry Meet and Welcome!
Black is considered to be all colors and helps to repel negative energy. So some witches like to wear it especially during ritual. I just like the color black personally.
I personally wear silver jewelry just because I like it better than gold. But as said before it can represent the moon or the goddess.
Some good books are:
Wicca for the Solitary Practioner by Scott Cunningham
To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver Ravenwolf
The Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca by ???
That's just to name a few... There are quite a few books out there that are good reads.
Some good websites:
www.witchvox.com (has links, personals, etc.)
www.amysticalgrove.com (news, lessons, links, supplies)
www.paganpath.com (has some lessons, links, supplies, and a forum)
www.wicca.com
www.avatarsearch.com (has great links and is a search engine.)
That's just to name a few... There are literally hundreds probably more that are good sites. You can do a search and find some really good sites.
