to me this rune carries a lot of passive Well aspects--Mimir's Well as opposed to Udhur's well. the containment of all you need know. i also have personal birthing and initiation associations with it. . . i will add more when im more in the mood to type

Perthro- phonetic value= 'P'; feminine polarity; Element- water & earth; color- silver, black; Deities- Frigga, Mimir, the Norns
Perthro represents a dice cup. When it comes up in a reading, it may mean that there is some risk involved in the issue at hand, but the odds will never be more in your favor.
It also symbolizes Mimir's Well. According to Lore & Tradition, after Odin recieved the Runes, he went to wise Mimir, seeking to know all things past, present & future. Mimir required that Odin sacrifice his eye for a drink from the Well. Odin plucked out his eye, tossed it into the well, & drank, receiving the gift of all-knowingness. Perthro represents this bottomless font of wisdom, the Source of All Knowledge.
This is also a Rune of birth. The shape of Perthro is that of the Rune Berkana (the Earth Mother) 'opening out'; that is, of a womb opening, giving birth. I usually take this to mean in the sense of new things, new processes beginning in the Seeker's life, although a couple of times, Perthro has accurately predicted pregnancy for women for which I've read.
Perthro is associated with the three Norns: Urd ('that which has become'- past); Verdandi ('that which is becoming'- present); & Skuld ('that which should become'- future), & with the Queen of the Gods & Goddesses, Frigga. The Norns weave wyrd (very similar to fate, but not just exactly), & Frigga spins the threads that the Norns weave into the Tapestry of Life.

In swedish sort of cliffrune (klipprunan) or something like that :)
Stands for: stability, both feet on the ground, secure. It is also the rune for the physical body. This rune often tells us to get in touch with our inner self, that will lead you to inner peace.
Reversed it might stand for being unbalanced, or having lost touch with the ground...
Wear this rune when you need to have both feet on the ground. May also be worn by someone who is ill, looking to get better.
It is sometimes associated with the tarot card High Priestess.
Rick, I loved what you said about birth and this rune, I didn't know that :)
I'll make sure to remember that, you see a close friend of my is expecting any day now. :) So I am off to toss some runes now...
Blessings

Hey hey we havent done Jera or Eihwaz yet!
lol, no worries I think Anur is posting it up in a new thread soon.
Thanks for starting this thread Nehelia :) Ill sort out the numbering when I put them in the stuck thread.
Ok to Perthro :D
I agree with you all! its a fab happy rebirth rune which brings allot of knowledge with it too! I always interperate this as a inner voice rune, it is telling you something like a secret ~ like pregnancy! It is also reminding the querrant that they have a spiritual guide, an inner energy, an inner voice ~ so is kind of magickal ;) It can also mean a gift ~ again tying in with birth and rebirth.
& in magick it can be used for Ferility sigils, spells and rituals and can infact increase the power of your work :)
Emy if your friend hasnt had her baby yet or even if she has ~ maybe make her a gift with Perthro on it ~ maybe get a piece of Rose Quartz and paint this rune on it ~ that would be very lovely as it is said to ease Childbirth! :D

"d'oh!" this is a prime example of my scattiness. . . i meant to do Jera so we could get to Eihwaz, but a personal path of mine goes Perthro Eihwaz and i mistakenly put the wrong rune with the number. . .
silver venus--i like your ideas about secrets and signifying gifts. . . those were the first characteristics that really drew me into Perthro
a lot of times, when i have a sequence of runes more attached through theme than through progression, i will draw them inside Perthro
i forgot that Frigga was associated with this one, tho. . . heh heh

Ok, in my set it's called Peorth. From the text that came with my set...
The symbol has been said to represent an apple, a chess piece, a dice cup, a tune, a hearth, or even a penis. Because the meaning is not necessarily well known, this rune is thought to represent the querent being unsure. It can also represent a secret or something the querent feels sensitive about, or that the querent is not being completely honest. Generally the outcome of the question this represents will be positive.

I've always associated Perthro with the releasing of emotions, energy and restraints. Maybe the opening part of the rune is making me think of another one? I don't really remember, the last time i had runes was over two years ago.

I've had this awful schedule at the university lately, I've been getting home around 19.00 so I haven't met her and given her it, but I made it for her :) And hopefully I'll get a chance to meet her before the baby comes and give it to her. :) She is like 13 days past the estimated date, so I'll guess she'll have the baby any second now :)

A little off topic baby update...
well, my friend got her baby last week, and it was a "little" boy of 57 cm and 4,5 kg :)
Haven't seen him yet in person, only the photos, he is really cute though :) (I got a bit of a cold, so I'll have to get rid off that one before I visit them)
The delivery took a long time, because they had to give her medicine to get the labour work started and everything so they were there for 31 hrs!!! And off those she was in pain for like 24 hrs! But they are both feeling fine right now :)

its funny, ive kinda been sitting on my response for this rune for awhile, hoping to come up with more stuff about it. . . but to me, perthro is basically an initiation rune, and has been from the very beginning. whenever i pull it, it always indicates an opening and a new angle of perception, things hidden either coming to light or becoming unnecessary to know. stepping forward on my path, deeper into the Divine. i agree with all the interpretations, but its essence is so potent to me in this way. . . its almost like a transition between one rune or part of my life and another.

At Imbolc or Candlemas, the appropriate runes are Perthro, Algiz and Sowilo. Perthro is the rune of the goddess Frigga as well as of the Norns. Frigga is the life-giving other who gives birth to Baldur, thus initiating the yearly cycle again. She is also the commander-in-chief of the Valkryries. Algiz is the rune sacred to the Valkryies. Sowilo represents the sun gaining in strength and the return of all life to Nature to be manifested at spring equinox and thus complete the wheel of the year. A ritual kindling of the fire is appropriate at this festival.
