Everyone loved the tarot bingo so much the first time (myself included), that I thought I'd steal the idea and start it up again. I hope you don't mind, AuroraSilvermist.

Now, to quote directly from Aurora's first tarot bingo post, here's how it's done:

1) Each person who wants to participate posts a list of 21 cards randomly drawn from their tarot deck of choice. You may use any deck you own; familiar, brand new, or anything in-between.

2) Each day, I'll randomly draw and post a tarot card. If that card happens to be on your list of 21 cards, you must post a little something about that particular card--your personal interpretation, little white book interpretation, whatever--in order to get the hit validated. Your post can be elaborate, or just a sentence or two. (Obviously, it's great if you can share more information because it helps us all learn.) You don't have to post your hit the same day, but you DO have to post it before anyone else calls BINGO, so the sooner you post it the better.

3) The first person to have all 21 cards validated WINS!

Deadline: The deadline for posting your 21 cards is Friday, March 31st.

So, who's up for the challenge? If you're interested, just post your random list of 21 cards along with the name of the deck you'll be using. I'll be the official Bingo Mistress this round.

Fun! I'll play again! :)
I'll be using the the fisrt deck I got. It's one of those beginner set decks, from the Liz Dean Art of Tarot set.
I sometimes have trouble with this one, because the pip cards are unillustrated, and that's a problem for me, as I usually like to do intuitive readings based on interpreting images. But whenever I do use this deck, I find that I get the messages I need.
So I'm going to try to get to know it a bit better.

Here are my cards:

01. The Moon
02. King of Wands
03. Knight of Swords
04. Five of Swords
05. Three of Wands
06. Ten of Wands
07. Two of Wands
08. Three of Pentacles
09. The Star
10. The Devil
11. Seven of Pentacles
12. Nine of Swords
13. Knight of Cups
14. The Hierophant
15. The Empress
16. Death
17. Queen of Cups
18. Three of Cups
19. The Lovers
20. Seven of Wands
21. Queen of Pentacles

Wow. So many wands!
And, of course, I got the Death card. I think Death cards love me.

btw, Windsmith - I adore the Victoria Regina deck - the imagery fascinates me. You've reminded me to add it to my list of tarot to buy.I adore them. The funny thing is that when I first started looking seriously for cards, my only rule was that I didn't want a black-and-white deck. But this one is so intricate and beautiful that I just had to have it. They're perfect for reading, too: there's so much detail in each card that every time I pull one I see something different that helps me relate to the query.

4 of Wands

Bethra
April 2nd, 2006, 12:16 PM
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! I got the first one :boing:

Spear Four / The Four of Wands.

Traditional meaning: Oppertunity.
Upright: The successful launching of a great new venture. Original ideas, finding expression. Inspiration which is being rewarded. Strength arising from enterprise and effort supported by powerful convictions. This is the card of the artist and the inventor who turns a dream into reality.
Reversed: Failure of nerve, inability to express ideas in tangible terms, pursuit of that which can never be. Indicates a lack of communication between the imagination and the physical world. Frustration with reality resulting in a retreat into fantasy. Grandiose schemes whih can come to nothing. Failure to support ideas with practical means of expression. The time is ripe to lay foundations for structure but it will be waisted due to in action if a move is not made quickly.

Arthurian meaning:
A path leads from a distant wood, branching off at a settlement. Besides the path stands a garlanded spear. After Gereint succeeded in the Enchanted Games, the joy of the Court was celebrated. This relates closely to the central mystery of the Hallowquest. This card indicates completion of an enterprise, a time of festival and celebration, Enjoyment of the fruits of ones labours, harmonious conclusions and acknowledgement of intuitive strengths.

Evendusk
April 2nd, 2006, 12:48 PM
I've got it too. From the little white book:

Four of Rods

A great garland is suspended from four flowering rods. Two young maidens clutch nosegays. In the background is a moated castle.

Divinatory meanings: Romance. Society. Harmony. Newly acquired prosperity. Peace. Tranquility. The fruits of labor. Rest after peace.

Reverse Meanings: Loss of full tranquility. Unfulfilled romance. Insecurity. Tarnished beauty. Incomplete happiness.

I have the Ace of Cups. :)

In the Tarot of Dreams the Aces are all beautifully drawn. The Ace of Cups is my favorite, though. It's a very pure and inspirational image. Very calming and full of hope.

The Cd-Rom that came with this deck gives the following meanings:

The Ace of Cups tells us we are about to experience the beginning of a new emotion or relationship.
If we are in conflict with someone this card tells us that good will can always prevail. We do not have to search for it, it is always there.

This deck also refers to the Tree of Life and places the Ace of Cups in Sphere 1: Consciousness (Kether). You are becoming conscious of the emotional and untuitional potentials available to you, both in your own mind and in the world around you.

A card I wish woud pop up more often in my own readings.

The Ace of Cups

The Ace of Cups represents the beginning of love, fertility and creativity. It is a card to inspire confidence and happiness. When it turns up in a reading of an everyday nature it can indicate the start of a loving relationship (of either the romantic or friendship variety); it can represent the beginning of a project in which a great deal of loving energy is invested (rather like the beginning of angelpaths); or sometimes it can reveal conception - the beginning of a new life.

If you are looking at the Ace of Cups indicating a new relationship, then there will also be people cards up. If it is a romantic relationship, expect to see other good Cups, and perhaps the Lovers. Friendship will be more indicated by Wand type good cards.

The Sun

The Sun conveys a sense of fertility and bounty. It is concerned with the turn of the years, cycles of birth, life, death and rebirth. This is a very warm and happy card. After the Moon opened up new doors, the Sun comes up to light the way forward. We have new hope and belief.

This is a card of healing, especially on an emotional level. It promises hope and happiness, along with a new sense of safeness, protection and recovery. We are at the place where miracles happen.

Woot got another one :D

The Sun

The Sun is the key of nineteen and reduces to unity out of multiplicity and indicates attainment. Like the Wheel of Fortune the Sun suggests the protective qualities of the mandala and through it an approach to the mystic centre. It is the realm of the collective psyche and is often represented poetically as the "childrens land", the country of innocence and undifferentiated consciousness, echoing the words of Jesus, "Unless you be converted and become like little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Children are often dipicted in this card. Having withstood the allure of the lunar night the dawn arives bright and new. This is joy of the soul. The new self is regenorated in the suns rays and there is a new innocence like that of a new-born. Consciousness triumphs over perils of the unconsious and the river of death has led the way to the fountain of youth. But the quest is not quite at an end. The sun still floats out of reach. Before the final ste all opposites must unite to transend their duality.

Traditional Meaning
Upright - Vindication of daring ideas, success and achievment aainst all odds. The triumph of the innovator, the man of imaginatin. The gaining of a safe refuge after a period of peril. Acclaim, approval, a just reward. Achievment of desires, material chievements through dedication to the work. Tust rewards.
Reversed - Misjudgement which ends in failure and ignominy. The exposure of one who succeded by doubtful means. Fantasies of success replacing real attainment. Recognise negative traits and eliminate them. It can still be a fortunate card but perhaps some delays must be expected before attainment.

Arthurian Tarot Meaning
Description: Under the midday sun rides a naked youth upon a white mare. On his back is a harp in his hand a spear.
Background: In the card of the Moon, we see the embryonic child growing in the womb of the Goddess. In this card, Mabon emerges into the world, ready to set out on his quest. Mabon's role is an archetypal one which can be applied to more than one of the Arthurian heroes. Theyouthful hero whose innocence and worthiness shines from him usually comes into a world torn by war and confusion. In his aspect of innocent youth, the hero brings a new perspective and the wisdom of his mother.
Mabons mother, Modron, is here represented by the white mare on which he rides. The White mare was emblematic of the soverignty of the Goddess, frequently appearing as a chalk hill figure or on Celtic coins. It represented the Goddess Epona aswell as Macha and Rhiannon.
Archetypal Meaning: The Sun represents the outer or revealed destiny of the One Who Will Come, be he or she monarch, poet, seer, hero or champion of truth. The Sun conquers by innocence, revealing falsehood by its shining beams, and gladdening the earth with its warmth.
Divinatory Meaning: Innocence, purity, enthusiasm, warmth, a loving heart, joy, freedom, enlightenment, wholeness, health, intolerance of shadows in any aspect of life. Clarity, directness and true vocations realized.

Page of Coins (Princess of Pentacles)

This card represents the beginning stages of a material endeavour. You could be starting to construct a physical object, or beginning a project involving gardening, nutrition, diet or exercise. Taking the suit of Coins more literally you could be embarking on a new savings plan or investment.

Pages are about learning. The Page of Coins is learning about material reality.

On the Tree of Life the Pages are in Sphere 10, Malkuth, the Sphere of reality. Coins being the suit of material reality, this makes the Page of Coins particularly materialistic, down-to-earth and reality minded.

The Sun (http://www.thefool.com/vr/index.asp?viewcard=19t) :sunny:

To me, the Sun is the least "symbolic" card of the Tarot deck. It simply represents the light and heat of the Sun, the heat that warms things up and gets 'em moving; the light that shines on all things impartially and shows them for what they really are - good, bad, or otherwise. What dark corners in the querent's life needs that sort of unbiased light shone on them, and what stagnant bits need some heat to make them zip again?

With the Sun, we are nearing the end of the journey that began with the Fool, and, especially in this deck, they mirror each other quite a bit. There's the traveler with his instrument, setting out; there's the little dog. But where the Fool struck out with no plan and no real attention to his situation, the boy in the Sun card looks up and out; he knows where he's going and what he's doing. It may be time for the querent to set out on a new venture - but one that is well thought-out, with the possible dangers as well as the possible benefits fully considered beforehand.

This card can suggest that the seeker may face defeat if he or she tries to force his or her will on the situation.
Hostility.
Can suggest a need for the seeker to put her own interests first.
Empty victory.
Constructive criticism; a valuable lesson.

Battling for an unattainable goal. It may be wiser to admit defeat. Do not let pride get in your way; sometimes it is more courageous to walk away.

Stone Hallow / Ace of Pentacles.

Earth signifies a need for physical expression, to be materially driven or to give structure to something which has until then been but a dream. The route of the power of earth has dominion over mundane matters of all kinds. It stands for materialism, gains, work, wealth and power.

Kether = The Aces
Ace signifies initiating energies. The experience of the elemental quality of the Ace on a deeper level. This can manifest in an unformulated way as in the desire to create or bring about an idea in a concrete manner. For example, the desire to paint a picture, write a book or designee a garden. It often gives focus to a reading and can indicate where a creative blockage is occurring. It signifies a deeply desired change.

Assiah (Hebrew for completing) - the World of Manifestation, Planetary or Elemental Force, the Tarot suit of Earth. Pentacles = Earth = Assiah. Assiah represents the final manifestation or creation. It is the season of Autumn, the season in which the growth is completed and we may harvest that which we have planted and grown. The time to reap what we have sown. What was begun in the Winter is manifested in the Autumn and time has once again moved full circle. Key phrase: The seed is gathered. This can also be viewed as the destination is reached.

Traditional Meaning
Upright: Security, firm foundations, wealth, possessions, appreciation of physical beauty and sensuousness. The faculty of sensation. Material comfort, appreciation of the good things in life. The approach to the spirit through the things of the earth. The stability and luxury of the element of earth. Stoicism, the ability to endure adversity with steadfastness.
Reversed: Greed, avarice, miserliness, dependence on physical pleasure for happiness, materialism, lack of faith in anything beyond this world. Fear of death, the pursuit of power and influence as ends in themselves. Lack of imagination or inability to alter fixed patterns of thinking behaviour.

Arthurian Meaning
In the earth of an underground cavern the Gwyddbwyll board glows with power. The Gwyddbwyll (literally translated as 'wood-cunning') board was one of the prime treasures of the Island of Britain. Whoever possessed it or played upon it was likewise part of the archetypal movements within the land itself.
Meaning: Wisdom, spiritual treasures, consolidation and establishment, attainment, fulfilment, prosperity, the faculty of sensation or instinct, mother-wit.

Ace of Disks (Pentacles)

The Ace of Disks marks, on the everyday level, the start of a new project, which is likely to be successful. So it will come up to show a new job, or a new business venture. Usually this will be the sort of project that seems to continuously keep on growing, with each level of attainment producing - almost of itself - the next step in the journey.

Sometimes the Ace will come up to indicate a sudden change of material fortune, or a windfall - though either of these would have to be quite substantial to invoke the Ace. Aces are always big influences, marking the beginning of something new and important. So if we see the card coming up to represent a sudden input of funds, expect this to cause major changes in the querent's life.

Ace of Pentacles

The Ace of Pentacles is the foundation for all kinds of projects in the real world; this foundaton is as valuable as gold, and as solid as concrete. It is the cornerstone of a building that might stand for decades, or crumble to dust after a few years - this is determined by how the rest of the structure is put together. The Ace of Pentacles is not the promise of long-lasting financial and material security that some might expect, but it is the sign that such things are within your reach. It gives you the resources to go in search of higher goals. The appearance of this card is usually the sign of a turn for the better in terms of fortune and wealth, and sometimes it can even indicate gifts of money, or inheritance from unexpected sources (hence the coin appearing from "thin air"). This gift does not have to be money of course; any kind of gift that has value to both the giver and the receiver can be indicated by the Ace of Pentacles. In particular, the card often refers to wedding rings and proposals of marriage, which may seem out of place in the Pentacles suit until you realize that such proposals are the solid foundation upon which the castles of love must be built.

Finally my first card...yay!!!

Princess of Swords (Page)

Like the other Sword people, the Princess of Swords is intellectually inclined, perceptive and intuitive. She is, again, a keen observer, who brings clarity and insight to situations in which she is involved. She is a forceful and self-determining young woman who ill-tolerates injustice, weakness and manipulation. She is probably not as secretive nor as hidden as some of the other Sword people - in fact, she tends to express her insight quite forcibly at times.

She has the same qualities as a keen observer of life, and people, that we see in the other Sword Courts. She's also a skilled arbitrator, having extensive negotiating skills and a ruthless cutting edge.

This card is another of those that has quite a bad reputation with some Tarot commentators - maybe because of her tendency to tell things as she sees them regardless of the consequences. Yet, unless she is badly dignified, the woman represented by this card will usually be honest, and frank.

She cuts away the blubber that often surrounds difficult emotional matters, and gets to the heart of things quickly and effectively. Generally she is objective and rational in her approach to life.

When this card comes up to represent a change of mood, however, we see the darker sides of the Princess emerging. Then we are looking at a woman who is angry, emotionally distressed and probably feeling vicious. She may then be spiteful and unkind, even heartless. Somebody in this kind of mood is often cruel, regularly seeking revenge, and looking for trouble.

Financial and material matters will be positive and prosperous, allowing us to gain a stable and comfortable position.

There is often, during a period like this, such good fortune that we end up with more than we actually need. If this happens to you, make sure that you continue to allow money (which is after all only energy) to keep flowing. Use the abundance that comes to you, and be generous with your bounty. Ensure that others benefit appropriately from your abundance. That's the best way that you can thank the Universe for flowing with you.

This card is all about our attitude towards giving and receiving. Ask yourself who you identify with more. Are you the woman in the carriage, giving assistance, or are you the beggars receiving it?

What's your reaction to the action depicted? Are you pleased that the woman is giving her resources so freely, or are you upset that she stays safely in her carriage, unwilling to interact with those she helps? Does she give freely, because she knows her bounty can help the less privileged, or does she do it grudgingly, out of obligation, or in hopes that her donation will make the problem go away? What do you imagine to be the attitude of those accepting her gifts, and how do you feel about that?

Your answers to these questions will likely be different in every reading where this card comes up.

Stars have long been seen as symbols of hope, regeneration, vision and new life. When this card appears, you know somehow that life is just about to become easier and brighter. Life's forces combine to assist rather than hinder.

Here is the truth about our power - we can join the solid earth of material existence with the flowing waters of spirit and create within ourselves a Universe. We have removed self-criticism and concentrated instead on our skills and strengths. When we regard ourselves with love, humour, tenderness and sympathy, we access the God and Goddess within and we are transformed.

This is a card of hope, faith, inspiration, generosity and serenity. It tells us to look for the light in the dark, that there is always something to look forward to. It says "follow your dreams."

Also, the image of the angel-winged woman pouring water from golden goblets into a pool and onto the ground makes me think of the Divine pouring out blessings upon the earth.
So I think the card can also remind us to count our blessings. Sometimes, when we are feeling low, thinking of all the good things in our lives makes us feel better.

5 of Cups

Temptation
April 14th, 2006, 06:25 PM
Five of Cups

Disappointment, a breakup, unmet expectations.

When this card comes up, it warns us that either we have failed to resolved an old difficulty, or that - realistic or not - our expectations are about to be disappointed. Often this will happen in an emotional situation (because this is a Cup card) but can happen elsewhere in our lives too, because disappointment itself is an emotion and therefore belongs to Cups. Aside from locating where the problem lies, there's rarely much that can be done except preparing ourselves to accept the inevitable consequence of being alive - into each life a little rain must fall etc.etc.

One thing that is always worth bearing in mind with a card like this is that the feelings which arise when it occurs often scare us into failing to take another risk, failing to make another effort, hiding away where we can't be disappointed again. But then if we give in to those sort of feelings we're expecting to be disappointed again, aren't we?

What?!? I go away for ten days and I come back to find that only three of my cards have been drawn? What a world!

Oh well, at least catching up will not be too difficult :D

Seven of Cups

Traditionally, this card is about becoming a bit too lax about things, indulging in wishful thinking and/or in sensual excess. It can also mean facing an array of choices and not necessarily being realistic or focused enough about them.

It can be interpreted as a warning that more rigour and effort are needed if we are to make the right choices in life, or, on the contrary, that things may have become a little too rigid and controlled and that letting one's imagination run wild could be helpful.

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, this card shows a woman applying makeup. Two servants assist her. A tray is laden with unguent and makeup pots. In the foreground, a basket overflows with fruit. The emphasis visibly is on the overindulgent aspects of the Seven of Cups, underscored by the title of the card: "Debauchery".
The fact that the woman is covering her face with makeup could be an allusion to the wishful thinking/self deception meaning of the card.

Queen of Cups

This card combines the Water energy of the Cups with the inward focus of Queens. The Queen of Cups is usually seen as gentle, loving, deeply intuitive and spiritual.

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, the Queen of Cups is seated on a rock surrounded by water. The waters around her are calm, but there is a wave crashing behind her: this may illustrate the fact that she is attuned to others' emotions but does not let them overwhelm or engulf her.
She looks meditative and serene. Her right hand holds a lotus bloom (linked to the afterlife in Egyptian religion) and gently strokes an ibis, symbol of the god Djehuty (Thoth). In her left hand she holds a chalice.

Justice

This card is about justice in the broader sense of the word: justice as in legal matters, but also as in doing what is right, making sure that one's actions and decisions are ethical and taking responsability for them. The message is that life is ultimately fair and that we will reap what we sow.

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, it is of course the Goddess Ma'at Who embodies Justice, as She represents truth, balance, what is right. She wears the feather of Truth on Her head and holds the balance of the Weighing of the Hearts in Her left hand. Resting in her right hand is an upright sword, pointing upward. This again suggests perfect balance, but also the unescapability of Justice, as does the serious, almost stern expression on Ma'at's face.

Wheel of Fortune

This card is about changes, unexpected events (usually positive ones), life cycles, destiny, luck.

Wheel of Fortune cards tend to have a rich, complex imagery and the Ancient Egyptian deck is no exception.

The Wheel is set in a deep rocky chasm. In front of it stands Khnum, the ram-headed potter God of creation. Before Him is His golden potter's wheel, on which stands a child, wearing the traditional lock of youth and representing Mankind.
The Wheel of Fortune itself has ten spokes and the end of each spoke shows a different stage of the lunar cycle, illustrating the unstoppable movement of the universe and the cycles of life.
On the right, Yinepu (Anubis) climbs the Wheel. One of His roles was that of psychopomp or guide of the souls; here his climbing the wheel can be interpreted as the soul embarking on a new, upward cycle.
A sphinx sits, apparently motionless, on top of the Wheel.
On the left, Set looses His grip and falls off the Wheel. Set usually being the harbinger of strife, aggression and disruption, His falling of the wheel can be seen as another sign that the Wheel of Fortune brings change for the better. However, Set was also seen as one of the strongest, most powerful Gods, so maybe this is a reminder that luck can be fickle and that what goes up has to come down.

The Wheel of Fortune is not only on my "card" for this game, it was the card I drew last Sunday (the 9th) as my weekly card. On Tuesday, my fiancee's car finally gave up the ghost and had to be hauled to the scrap yard. Just when she was about to get out of debt, she had to drop $9,000 on a car. Our printer gave out, too, and since we're in crunch-time for wedding preparation, we can't really be without one. Another $200 gone - and when we set it up yesterday morning, we found out it doesn't work. That is the Wheel of Fortune.

6 of Pens (wands) (http://www.thefool.com/vr/index.asp?viewcard=6w)

The 6 of Pens represents a moment of public recognition for your good works. Hopefully, you do what you do out of a deep sense of love and committment to that thing, but isn't it nice not to always labor in obscurity? But be aware that such moments as this are fleeting and few. We must avoid the temptation to rest on our laurels and not try to accomplish something new; rather, we can use the energetic high of the moment of recognition to spur us on to greater achievements. Ultimately, our sense of worth and the validity of our work must come from within.

The time has come to move on to a higher level of something. We need to be able to recognize when something is either done or ready to move on. Is it time to start persuing your 2nd degree initiation? Should you break up with your girlfriend or move in with her? Maybe your group needs to step aside and let that newly formed organization organize the anti-war protests. Judgement is the card of honestly assessing what you've done in the past and heeding the call of what your Deep Self is calling you forward to do. It may be time to move on to the next phase - or to let it go and move on to something else completely.

Congrats on your new deck, Zephyrstorm! :)

Yay! I have two more cards! Now we're talking! ;)

Six of Wands

This card is about achieving success, public recognition and feeling proud about it. It usually conveys a very positive message, but it can also serve as a warning against excessive pride.

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, the Six of Wands shows six young soldiers standing in front of fortified walls. One of them, presumably their leader, has come to the front and is presenting his standard in a sort of salute. The arid landscape, the predominence of ochre and reds and the many solar symbols adorning the standards all reinforce the idea of "having one's day in the sun".

Judgement

This is a complex card that can have many meanings. In the most literal sense, Judgement is about using one's critical abilities, honestly appraising one's situations then making hard choices, taking a stand. But there is also the idea of feeling reborn, starting again, seeing things in a new light. A third aspect is about the Self answering to its Higher Self: hearing one's true calling in life, feeling inner conviction, forgiving oneself and others, feeling absolved.

The Ancient Egyptian deck offers its own twist on the traditional Judgement card: sarcophagi adorned with symbols of the soul and the afterlife have replaced the usual coffins and the three family members, freed from their mummy wrappings, greet Wesir (Osiris).
In the upper section of the card, as if in filigree, Djehuty (Thoth) and Yinepu (Anubis) are seen holding the scales of Ma'at that serve for the Weighing of the Heart, the closest concept to a Last Judgement in the Ancient Egyptian religion.

Sorry guys, went home for the easter holidays and have been without internet pretty much since I posted my cards, so here is my catch up :D.

Ace of Pentacles

This card symbolises prosperity, often of monetary means.

Five of Cups

The overturned cups represent the loss of something that cannot be regained, but the cups left standing remind the reader that there is still something that remains and can be preserved. Although there has been loss this is an opportunity to take what is left and to go on in a different direction.

Six of Cups

In the Tarot of the Moon Garden, this card shows six cups bearing flowers on top of a wall. This represents the past and often a fond memory of it.

Page of Pentacles

In this card, the Page is holding a bubble with a pentagram on it outwards, almost as if offering it to the world. To me this represents a person who offers help and advice to others and now might be the time to listen and take heed of what they say.

Page of Swords

This card shows a young person brandishing a sword to fight off a threat whilst a dragon encircles their feet. This warns of becoming too focussed on one thing and not paying attention to others. It reminds of the need for perception and awareness.

The Star

This card signifies bright prospects, hope and faith. The flowing water represents a smooth path and fulfillment.

Sorry that it took so long.

Reverse Meanings: Narrow-mindedness. Maliciousness. Bigotry. Deceitfulness. Vengefulness. Prudishness. A treacherous enemy. An ill-tempered person.

Hey, I have both. Woohoo!

Queen of Swords

THe Queen of Swords is cool, efficient, charming, friendly, and intelligent. She is concerned with fairness and equality between people. She is more friend than lover for she bears emotional scars from the past. The Queen of Swords could appear in your life as a person (somtimes a lone woman) who offers friendship and advice when you need straight answers, or you may need more freedom.

Knight of Wands

This Knight is an active, vigorous, impatient young man, but lacks staying power. As a lover, he can sweep you off your feet wiwth his passion, but only for the moment.

A surge of self-energy; desire for personal freedom. Impatience; action, the will to move ahead.

The Prince of Wands (Knight)

The person represented by the Prince of Wands will be an active, energetic person, with a warm and generous heart, and a good sense of humour. He will have a natural and infectious optimism about him, tackling every aspect of his life with enthusiasm and vigour.

He will be friendly, gregarious and open in his attitudes, possessed with a very healthy sense of his own value, but also supportive and encouraging to others. You'll often come across him in working areas where healing, encouragement and development are involved.

The apparently easy-going happy-go lucky exterior conceals a deeply rooted moral sense. At his best he typifies the 'shining white knight' principle - always ready to stand up for what is right, and good; willing to fight to protect those who are more vulnerable than himself.

If the card comes up to indicate an inner response, rather than an actual person, it will signify rising confidence levels, and a positive attitude to life. This card is often the result of overcoming fears and surmounting obstacles which have previously hindered us, or held us back.

The Sleeping Lord / Judgement

This is the card of divine judgement symbolizing the Last Judgement when the archangels shall blow the last trumpet and the dead shall rise up. This card has the key of twenty which symbolizes duality on a higher plane. The soul is ready for trancending it's earthly plane and sawing on new wings above in the sky. The patient growth symbolized in traditional cards like the Ryder Waite ones is shown as the sun at its highest zenith in the sky. The psyche is released from its earthly imprisonment and is reborn. The herald calls and the people rise as if growing from the ground their gaze is raised to the sky and the winged form. This card refers to creative impulses which call forth the highest within. The striving upward to new heights of endeavour. It is a warning against missing the call and misinterpretations leading to lost youth or yearnings. A stage in life where issues are at crisis point and once resolved changes will occur. This card symbolises divine judgement for good or bad depending on placement in the reading and surrounding cards.

Traditional Divination Meaning

Upright: Joy in accomplishment. A new lease of life. A return to health. Justified pleasure in achievements. A resolving of issues.

Reversed: Loss, guilt, reproach for wasted opportunities. Punishment for failure. Paying for past miss-deeds.

Arthurian Meaning.

Description: The gigantic figure of the Sleeping Lord lies as a hill, incorporated into the land itself. On his thigh stands the youthful hero blowing a horn. All about the landscape people of many kinds, ages and eras rise out of their tombs and barrows. They look upwards to a great eagle which flies overhead.

Background: Consistent within Arthurian tradition is the assertion that Arthur will come again. Many hills and sites have been associated with this legend and stories have been told about daring individuals who entered the Hollow Hills to discover Arthur and his court asleep therein. Usuallly the finder is given the opportunity to summon Arthur from sleep by blowing a horn, drawing the sword from its scabbard, or cutting the baldric which lies near the king. But though he is tempted to do so, the finder usually returns to his own world without doing this, because Arthur may only be awakened in the time of Britains greatest need.

Archetypal Meaning: The Sleeping Lord represents abiding promise of renewal. He indicates the apocatastasis - the point where creation is drawn back to its origins and remade. When Arthur or any salvific figure comes again, the times are understood to be at their end and their beginning. Those who partake of the mysteries are liberated from time into an unknown existence goverened by the Dwellers in Avalon.

Divinatory Meaning: Renewal, resurrection, recapitulation of events or ideas, prophetic vision, ending or beginning, forgiveness, adjustment, recovery of that which has been lost sight of, impulse to change one's life.

The Hanged Man (http://thefool.com/vr/index.asp?viewcard=12t)

Got yourself into an impossible situation? Nobody to blame but you? Nobody to lend a hand? Not sure what to do now? That's the Hanged Man. Your first instinct might be to strive as hard as you can in as many ways as you can to extricate yourself from your situation, but, like quicksand, the wilder your flailing, the more you may find yourself stuck. Take a minute to relax and consider your circumstances from the unique angle you find yourself in. You may discover a new - and easier - way out.

Ack! Things have been so busy that I have not had a chance to post my cards.

I am just going to list the cards I got as a reminder to myself and then, as soon as I can catch up, I will come back and post meanings to validate them.

Three of Swords

This card is traditionally about heartbreak, betrayal, rejection and all these sorts of lovely things...

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, this is illustrated by what may be seen as a couple after a serious fight. They are both naked, the woman sits on the bed, hiding her face in her arms, probably crying. The man turns his back on her and stands in the doorway, arms crossed, looking outside.
Even the paintings on the walls represent mourners and wailing women.

For all its apparent negativity, this card may have a silver lining: the wailing women on the wall fresco are mourning, but they know that the deceased is now embarking into a new journey, that of the Afterlife.
Similarly, a breakup in a relationship may open the door to another, healthier one. A serious fight may help clean the air and ultimately turn out to be constructive rather than destructive.
The Three of Wands asks us to face our pain, to accept conflict and loss as a necessary catalyst for change and improvement.

Prince of Wands

This card draws from both the fiery nature of the suit of Wands and the young energy of the Knights.

The Prince of Wands is therefore passionate, adventurous and charming, but he may not be mature enough yet to exercise restraint and moderation in these departments. There is a chance of him being shallow, overly self-confident and foolhardy.

In the Ancient Egyptian deck, this Knight stands in his chariot (swiftness) and holds the Waas sceptre (power, strength). The chariot rides through flames, which is an illustration of the fire element associated with Wands, but it could also be interpreted as a display of both fearlessness and recklessness.

The Hanged Man

A card of many meanings, the Hanged Man can be about indecision, immobilism, taking the time to consider one's options, pausing to reflect on one's past, self-sacrifice, giving in order to receive...

One can also see that the Hanged Man's face shows no sign of pain, in spite of his uncomfortable position. Actually he looks quite serene, which makes me think that rather than being completely passive, he has been practising meditation and introspection. Being suspended upside-down also brings to mind the notion of being able to see things from a different, unusual position, which can definitely be an asset.

Self-knowledge.

This card represents our trueness to our own inner needs and inspirations. It represents a point of inner balance where we are clear about the things we want to create in our lives, and confident in our ability to make our dreams come true. Out of this clarity and confidence arises a new quality of self-reliance and happiness.

We develop a new understanding of our virtues, our skills, our talents; we have a better view of what we have to offer and what we need in return. We become more aware of ourselves, and more in harmony with the Powers of Light.

When this card comes up in your reading, it is important that you cast aside doubts and fears, refusing to fall back into old habits. Instead you must turn your face to the future, trusting in your own power, making no compromises. Trust yourself, and everything else will fall into place.

The Wounded King / The Hanged Man.

The Hanged Man is one of the strangest cards of the Tarot. It has no placement in any orthodox Christian symbolisum unlike most of the other cards in which it is possible to find religious undertones. It is the clearest image of the Tarot to illustrate some non-Christian system of belief. The Hanged Man is the key of twelve signifying interaction of unity with duality which gives rise to a third dimension. It is the symbol of renewal and salvation. The Hanged Man illistrates one who has taken his life in his hands and cast himself head first into the depths. The image on the traditional cards like Ryder Waite is remanisant of Odin handing on the World Tree in order to find the magic of the Runes, and such is the message of the card. The hanging mans actions are not those of a foolish man. He hangs safely suspended by the knot of his own faith. The Hanged Mans peacefull face reveals that his sacrifice has not been waisted and that he has his reward. His torture is transmuted to ecstacy as the flagerisers of biblical refrance. Odin described how he hanged himself on the World Ash in order to discover the mystic runes. In Sumerian rites the God Attis was hung in effigy each year on a pine tree and the closest Christian belief was that the Christ was hung upon the cross and his sacrifice brought about the redemption of man. Success only comes from sacrifice.

Traditional Meaning

Upright: The ability to change, a flexible mind. A willingness to submit oneself to the dictates of the inner self and cast aside practical considerations when the time is right. Wisdom and guidance from the unconscious. Trails and vissitudes and self-denial. A personal sacrifice. The card of a dieter

Reverced: Over reliance on the concrete mind. Materialism and a warning of impending psychic disorder through an inability to accept the reality of the unconscious. An inner strugle ending in defeat. Such a sacrifice will be wasted and will not score any points on a higher level.

Arthurian Meaning.

Description: In a forset clearing hung with banners, the Wounded King lies on a bed. By his side is a hound, at his feet is a stone.

Background: The Wounded King appears in the Grail legends as its disempowered guardian. His unhealing wounds keep him in continual suffering and he is unable to be healed untill the Grail winner has achieved the redemptive vessel. Most people are familier with this figure from Wagner's opera Parzifal where he is called the Fisher King. Wagner drew from Wolfram von Eschenbach's reworking of the French Grail romances which in turn derived from British oral traditions.
The wounds of the king are reflected in the waistland his kingdom has become and only the Grail can heal them both. It appears in the Wounded Kings hall as a redemtive vision, usually as part of the procession of the Hallows which are borne in after the meal. But the Grail cannot do its work unless a worthy champion comes and asks the Grail queston "What does this signify?" or "Whom does the Grail serve?" The asking of the question demonstrates that the seeker is aware of the wounds of the king and the wasting of the land and truly desires to heal them both. It is only so that the Grail quest is activated.
The origins of the Wounded King are deeply rooted in a prehistoric tradition by which the tribe's leader dies for his people. One such ruler is Bran the Blessed who, in Celtic tradition, is beheaded by his followers who then bury the head to repel invasion. Bran descended into Grail tradition as Brons, the Fisher King - a title which arises from the confusion between the two similar French words p'echeur (sinner) and p^echeur (fisher).

Archetypal Meaning: The Wonded King represents the redemptive sacrifice of the Grail mysteries. His suffering brings wisdom and insight, not only for himself but for his people. His is a willing sacrifice, not a gratuitous holocaust of blood. It is enjoined upon all seekers to ask the Grail question in whatever situation they find themselves: "What is this about?", "How may I remedy this?" The answer to these questions is the service of the Grail. There are many answers.

Divinatory Meaning: Wisdom gained through hardship and experience, spiritual insight, commitment to inner principles. The pain and misunderstanding caused by this commitment to others not so dedicated, metanoia - a changing of one's life, inner healing, meditation, purification, the stripping away of inessentials and self-sacrifice on all fronts.

Spear Three / Three of Wands

Traditionaly called the card of Oppertunity or Virtue in Crowleys Thoth.

Traditional Meaning.

Upright: The successful launching of a great venture. Original ideas finding expression. Inspiration which is being rewarded. Strength arising from enterprise and effort supported by powerful convictions. This is the card of the artist and the inventor who turns a dream into reality.

Reversed: Failure of nerve, inability to express ideas in tangible terms, ursuit of that which can never be. Indicates a lack of communication between the imagination and the physical world. Frustration with reality resulting in a retreat into fantasy. Grandiose schemes which can come to nothing. Failure to support ideas with practical means of expression. The time is ripe to lay foundations for success but it will often be waisted due to inaction.

Arthurian Meaning.

Description: The path leads between the trees in a beachwood. A spear points the way forward.

Background: During the Quest the knights often met with guidance through the vast entangledment of the Forests of Adventure. Sometimes this took the form of a hermit figure, sometimes two naked children sitting in a trr and indicating the way.

Meaning: Established strength, controlled intention, intuitive understanding gives an expansive outlook and resulting opportunities, scrupulous responsibility, enterprising initiative.

XII The Hanged Man

A young man hangs from a tall cross by his right foot. His hands are secured behind his back. The man's eyes are open and he remains fully conscious and aware of his surroundings. The Hanged Man is depicted in a state of inertia. Although still earthbound, he has attained some measure of relief from the transition of life. A nimbus radiates from his head.

Divinatory Meanings: Life in suspension. Transition. Change. Reversal of the mind and one's way of life. In a passive sense, apathy and dullness. Boredom. Abandonment. Renunciation. The changing of life's forces. The period of respite between significant events. Sacrifice. Repentance. Readjustment. Regeneration. Improvement. Rebirth. The approach of new life forces.

Reverse Meanings: Lack of sacrifice. Unwillingness to make the necessary effort. Failure to give of one's self. Preoccupation with the ego. False prophecy. Useless sacrifice.

A calm, stately figure, possibly a merchant, stands at a cliff's edge watching as ships return from a sea voyage.

Divinatory Meanings: Practical knowledge. Business acumen. Strength. Enterprise. Negotiations. Trade. Commerce. Undertaking.

Reverse Meanings: Assistance with an ulterior motive. Treachery. Diminishing adversity. Beware of help offered.

King of Cups

This is an interesting card as every book or website seems to have a different (sometimes very different) interpretation for it...
Of course since this is a King, we know it has to do with mastery and/or outward action and since this is the suit of Cups, we know that it is about emotions and/or creativity.

Many "traditional" interpretations seem to portray that King in a very favourable light: kind, genuinely caring, open-minded, diplomatic and wise. A few authors warn against too much of a good thing, I suppose, and tell us that the King of Cups can also be overly sentimental or manipulative.

The Ancient Egyptian Tarot handbook looks at this card from yet another angle and describes this King as an easy-going person whose interest span is limited; who enjoys novel ideas and new experiences, but soon moves on to something else.

Art (Temperance)

This card is related to the union and harmonisation of opposites.

Art shows us that those among us who allow a free flow of life force use it the most effectively, wasting the least and achieving most. If we are thoughtful, receptive and in harmony, we allow the Higher Powers to run unhindered through our spirits and emotions - and finally into our daily lives.

Life is a river. Instead of clinging on to a rock let go and become part of the water. Find the still point within and live from that point and by doing that our hopes and dreams come closer.

Brought to you by the amazing Jan at AngelPaths.com (http://www.angelpaths.com/tarotl.html). Her interpretations of the Thoth cards match my own to the letter and she says it all much better than I ever could.

The Magician

Education, training, knowledge, common sense,
opportunities. Translating thoughts and plans into action.

As the Fool embarks on his voyage, the first personage he
encounters is the Magician.
As soon as we are born, our minds immediately begin
processing sensory input, drawing conclusions about it, and
learning from it, and it is this function which the Magician
represents. In the language of archetypes, he is the Wise Old
Man.

On a more personal level, we rely on our inner Magician to help us learn new skills and abilities and to recognize opportunities. Often, this happens on
such a deep level that the realization or learning seems to come
in a flash of inspiration, as if a real live Magician had zapped
it into our heads

Merlin / The Magician.

Traditionaly the Magician is shown as a forceful and self-confidant youth who stands alone at his table where he plies his trade. On many sets he is depicted with a representation of each suit of the Tarot on his table. He represents positive action, individuality and creativity. With his key of one he is the first stage of conscious existance, the emerging of self-awareness at the begining of the journey of Life. This is the Fool taking his first steps into adulthood. The symbol above his head signifies the divine spirit and eternity. He is the conscious link between the world of spirit and the world of man. His inner garments are white signifying his remaining purity and balance. His outer clothing is colourful depicting his fire of purpose. he invites the seeker to think clearly and divorce emotions from thought. He is the realisation of the power of thought. He is the confidence required to pursue a goal but with more knowledge than the blind Fool he was at the start of his journey.

Traditional Meaning

Upright: The Magician represents the strength of will and the expansion of the persona. He is the willingness to face risks and the initiative that will lead to success and triumph. He is adaptability and versitility, diplomacy and self-confidence. He can indicate the beginning of an important new cycle in the affairs of the seeker. All is well in the mind. He is ready to accept the challanges and lessons necessary to use and control his life. No longer full of the blind faith of youth and ready to move along his own path.

Reversed: In this position the Magician is the opposite of the above. He represents weakness of will and failure of nerve. He is timidity and hesitation that results in further problems. He is the inability to face reality and see the problem in its true perspective. He is failure of a path at it's outset and a bad beginning to an ill-advised stage in life.

Arthurian Meaning

Description: Merlin stands before a stone table on which is laid a map of Britain. The four Hallows, the Sword, the Spear, the Grail and the Stone Chessboard lie upon it. Above his head a read and white dragon intertwine. To his right is the dark, crumbling tower of Vortigern, while to his left is his Otherworldly dwelling with many doors and windows.

Background: The early life of Merlin is often forgotten, but it is of prime importance for understanding his role in this story. Merlin was born of an earthly mother and an Otherworldly father, thus establishing him as a prime mover and mediator between the two worlds.
In early legend he is called Myrddin Emrys and as a child he was brought before Vortigern, the unworthy King of Britain. Vortigern had attempted to build a tower in which he might take refuge from his enraged subjects, but it fell down three times (probably situated on the foot hills of Swondon 40mins drive from my home). His magicians said it would remain standing only if the blood of a child who had no father was sprinkled on the foundations. But Merlin confounded the magicians and showed that the cause of the tower's collapse was because of the two dragons which warred continuously beneath the mountain. The red one signified the Britons the white the Saxons whom Vortigern had settled in Britain.
It is believed that Merlin paved the way for the Pendragons, for Arthur and his father Uther, and although later texts speak of Merlin's imprisonment at the hands of Nimue or Vivienne, who is said to have enticed him into revealing his magic through love of her, a closer investigation of earlier texts reveal that Merlin's retirement was a voluntary one. His sister Gwendydd or Ganieda, builds for him an observatory having 70 doors and windows, from which he may view the heavens. This legend is closely associated with an oral tradition concerning Merlin's guardianship of Britain which is called Clas Myrddin or Merlin's Enclosure. Further legend credits Merlin with retiring to Bardsey Island, to a Glass House, in which he keeps the 13 treasures of Britain (read Bernard Cornwells Winter King, Excaliber and Enemy of the Gods for the full story behind this)

Archetypal Meaning: Merlin is the inner herald of dreams, relaying the messages of the Otherworld in symbolic form. He is also prophet and seer. He enables the manifestation of events which lie in embryo through his mastery over the four elements, although he does not manipulate events. His real magic lies in his balanced mediation of iner and outer worlds.

Divinatory Meaning: The impulse of creation, imaginative insight, mastery through disciplined skill, initiative, self-confidence, perception on all levels, alignments to and free flow with one's life patterns.

Knight of Swords

Temptation

Prince of Swords (Knight)

The Prince of Swords type is a highly intellectual and usually well-educated person, with a rapid fire mind and a great capacity for abstract thinking. He produces ideas with astonishing speed, but often moves on too quickly to follow through or elaborate on them. He can be challenging, entertaining, stimulating - and completely exhausting!

The card represents a private person, who defends his inner space quite determinedly. This is some-one who is hard to get to know - in fact, you'll probably not succeed entirely no matter how long you know him. He is a thinker, and chooses those he shares his thoughts with carefully. He's usually also very independent, and often appears unemotion
