the two tarot decks i have are really not traditional (i cant read hieroglyphs and zen buddhism does not make for a "proper" tarot deck). i find that its impeding my attempts to become better at reading, and that its also really hard to do studies on archetypes and the subconscious
so im shopping for a new deck, and was wondering if any of you could give suggestions on decks with good symbolism and high-quality art that wouldnt offend my art fag snobbery. im not adverse to theme decks. Crowley's Thoth tarot is an obvious choice, but every time i try to pick it up it tells me "no i no like you" er something. . . im thinking mebbe the Robin Wood tarot?
anyway, suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I use Robin Wood tarot and personally find it wonderful. There are tons of beautiful decks out there! You might want to look at http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/tarota.html they show you samples of what decks look like. :D Happy hunting!

I don't know if you care for my opinion, but I figure it's free.
anyway I 've used a few decks in my time and the one I connect with is the unicorn deck. It seems to conect the best with my personality and my other gifts.
That and I always had a thing for unicorns.

i know, Greenman, but the two times i went to buy the Thoth i got the distinct impression i was not to purchase it, to the point of getting uncomfortable and tense when i thought about getting the deck anyway. perhaps im not supposed to be working with such an intense deck just yet. its kinda sad tho because i have an altar space now to put tarot cards up for meditation and connection. . .
i dunno. i will go look at deck stuffs on the links given. . .

I have used the Thoth deck for years and it works well for me. I also have The Spiral Tarot. I basically bought that one because the spiral has been working with me for about a year. Several months ago, I began working with the Motherpeace Deck. The cards are round and I didn't know until after I bought the large deck that there is also a small one that is easier to shuffle. This deck has beautiful symbolism and is goddess and female oriented. I've heard complaints that it's not male friendly but if you're female, who cares? There are several books out there for interpretation. I posted a thread a week or two ago about the differences in two separate books that I bought, each written by the two women who created the deck. The readings for myself (I've never read for others) that I've done with this deck speak to me and have been more accurate than other ones I've used.
When I was using the Thoth Deck, I used Angeles Arrien's book for interpretation. The section on constellations and where you can determine what your whole year and personality symbols are is very good. You can also use it with other decks. I can't remember the exact name of the book and am too lazy to get up right now, but if you need to know I'll check for you.

'The Tarot Handbook' by Angeles Arrien.
"I've heard complaints that it's not male friendly. but if you're female, who cares?
i would think that balance would be important regardless of gender. that's one of the reasons that i never got into this deck, or 'The Goddess Tarot'.
i mean, i wouldn't be drawn to an 'Attila the Hun' deck either!
(meant to represent an all male type deck).

I completely agree with you that balance is very important. I recently realized that I had been working almost exclusively with Goddess energy and am now working on paying more attention to the God.
Actually, I disagree that the deck is not male-friendly. Just because women are mainly depicted in the minor arana doesn't mean that the interpretation can't apply to males also, especially when it is referring to community. The complaint may arise from some of the Sons and Shamans being depicted as negative personalities - but not all of them are.
Apologies and groveling if my comment offended you - :(

... I still like the Rider-Waite. It just works for me!
I'd love the Goddess Tarot though, but I don't know how well I would read with it!

i have figured out that there's a grrl my Egyptian tarot deck needs to go to, and once i straighten that out i'll be able to get a Thoth deck. i guess having both of them would create arguments and soap opera er something--the Egyptian deck is very. . . picky
but thanks for all the input

Halloween Tarot... I love love love this one!
I also have the Goddess Tarot, which is very beautiful, Crow's Magic Tarot, which has some very nice shamanic imagery (but I don't like the keywords they have written on the cards), and the Adrian Tarot, very artsy.
