Athens - A group of Greek pagans who venerate the ancient gods of Mount Olympus said on Friday they would shortly be seeking state recognition of their beliefs.

I think their religion should be recognised as i think it's a perfectly legitimate one, but i just have one question, why do they call themselves:

Supreme Council of the Gentile Hellenes

Maybe this might be a dumb question, but gentile means non-Jewish, exactly what are this group trying to say, if they want to say their religion isn't Jewish, i think everyone knows that, or are they saying that anyone with Jewish heritage can't be a Hellenic Reconstructionist.

I always am skeptical of any group who call themselves "supreme" anything, especially if they do not have a history to back up that claim. I mean I could say that my own tradition is the "High Worshippers of the Greatest Goddess" but what would that mean really? I think they should have a right to state recognition, especially if they are reconstructing a religion or tradition native to the state they are in. But at the same time, unless they are looking for benifits...why go to so much trouble?

Technically, gentile means "pagan" or, at least, that's what it started out to mean. It comes from the latin word 'gentilis'. Mormons also use it in the same way that Jews do - to indicate anyone who's not of their faith.

I fail to see why they need access to archeological sites to conduct thier cerimonies. Why can they not erect new temples?

I understand the desire to be at a place where your gods were worshiped (I am a devoted follower of Athena) but I fail to see why trampling over priceless archeological sites will help anything.

I thought gentile mean 'non-Jewish', doesn't it?
