View Full Version : I don't see how Cancer (my sign) corresponds with The Chariot.

I've been studying the astrological correspondents of the Tarot and for the most part they help me understand the cards better, but supposedly the card of Cancer, my Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus sign are related to the Chariot card.
This doesn't make sense to me because Cancer is a very passive and feminine sign while the chariot is a masculine card about forth driving and self assertion.
The card does make sense when reversed, however. Could this be true of other cards?

I've never thought of corresponding tarot to astrology.. where did you read about that?

Numerous internet sources, as well as my cards themselves have astrological correspondents for the Major Arcana. Here they are:
00 Fool: Uranus
01 Magician: Mercury
02 High Priestess: Moon
03 Empress: Venus/Earth
04 Emperor: Aries
05 Hierophant: Taurus
06 Lovers: Gemini
07 Chariot: Cancer
08 Strength: Leo
09 Hermit: Virgo
10 Wheel of Fortune: Jupiter
11 Justice: Libra
12 Hanged Man: Neptune
13 Death: Scorpio
14 Temperance: Sagittarius
15 Devil: Capricorn
16 Tower: Mars
17 Star: Aquarius
18 Moon: Pisces
19 Sun: Sun
20 Judgement: Pluto
21 World: Saturn
There are also correspondents for the court cards, but not for the pages/princesses.
King of Wands: Leo
Queen of Wands: Aries
Knight of Wands: Sagittarius
King of Cups: Scorpio
Queen of Cups: Cancer
Knight of Cups: Pisces
King of Pentacles: Taurus
Queen of Pentacles: Capricorn
Knight of Pentacles: Virgo
King of Swords: Aquarius
Queen of Swords: Libra
Knight of Swords: Gemini
Furthermore, each of the 'pip' cards represents a certain planet in a certain sign, but I don't feel like typing that right now. ;)

If you notice, the astrological signs go in order.
Personally, I use the Robin Wood deck and in this deck, the Chariot isn't as masculine as say the card in the Witches tarot. In my deck, he looks more like a gangly boy and he's holding a harp I believe.....which lends to his sensitive nature.

What Dagda said. Besides that a quick glance makes me think a lot of them don't necessarily make sense to me - ie. the lovers and gemini (uh, love? venus?), or the World and Saturn (uh, world? earth?).

Iagree with Myst and Dagda and say that the elements of the zodiac and the cards co-incide but further than that each deck is very different from another and you cant sya the Chariot is for Cancer deffinatley.
Id say Cancer is King of Cups but thats in my decks :p

:evilway:
the tarot is a live thing to me. When it first started being able to use it , the tarot actually started speaking to me, internally. not like voices in my head  more like intuition. I was looking at the deck, it was the ryder deck. I thought to my self I wonder what card is me???? then I saw the picture on the box , it was the magician, I thought to myself, hey that really reminds me of me. I shufled the cards spread them out put them together and said to the cards the universe the powers that be, show me the card that most reprecents me, and drew the card, "1" the magicain, I was born July 1 1964 and after looking in a couple of books, yes indeed July 1 is the magician. I guess what I'm shareing??? is that ituition seems to be more powerful then what a book might say. Suckling what do you FEEL is your card?? :boing::boing::boing:

Myst, I can explain those ones.
The Lovers card doesn't merely represent love. Love is a very broad area that is covered by many of the cards. The Lovers is a card of opposites, which makes perfect sense along Gemini. Venus is associated with the Empress, which makes more sense. Think of Taurus, which Venus rules and it's association with love of nature, home orientation and beauty. That matches the Empress card perfectly.
As for the world being Earth, you're way off. The World is a card of the entire Universe (which it is also often called) and enlightenment. Those are not Earthly things. As for it corresponding with Saturn, I'm not sure since I'm not well versed on the Planet, but I'm sure it works better than you think.

Yes and in a perfectly boxed little world where there's only one way to think that would work.
Back here on earth...
Your "being sure it works better then I think" is interesting considering you yourself have doubt about Cancer and the Chariot. There's a reason why we have brains to think for ourselves and that's it. If a correspondence doesn't feel right NEVER use it. Correspondences exist not as textbook formulas but as mindkeys for personal use.
This applies for astrology *and* for tarot cards. Neither have textbook definitions that are always right and true. Therefore if the World to me in one reading represents earth then that's what it represents to me and that's what I use.

You sound offended! Are you? I"m sorry if I came of sounding arrogant, I just honestly thought those made sense.
Maybe they're not really supposed to make sense, eh? They do go in order after all. Hmmm.

Hmm..well..I also sometimes see the Chariot (especially when reversed, or depending on surrounding cards), as representing a choice between two roads. Sometimes, it will indicate a "moment of decision" type thing. Because in the Robin Wood deck, it depicts the Chariot being drawn by two horses, one black, one white, and both of them seem to be "veering" off into differen't directions. So..anyway...being that one of the traits of a Cancerian, is moodiness (deep highs and lows in moods), this would kind of make sense to me, in a way. The whole duality thing.
Speaking as a Gemini, I think the Lovers card generally fits gemini's, too. Most Gemini's have an incredibly flirtatious nature (but of course, this always depends on the other elements of ones chart. Mine for instance, tames these more common gemini traits), and also, a sense of duality. The lovers Card represents to me, romance, often, an affair, choices, decisions, duality, balance. And..as a gemini, I can attest to the whole schizo quality of people of my sighn :) So it makes perfect sense to me :)

For me the lovers cards always represents people in love. Always. :)

I'm not asking this because I want to debate with you about it Myst..we all have systems that work best for us, and meanings which stick out for us, regarding tarot. But...I have a question for you.
Suppose someone comes to you, needing a reading specifically about something like Finances, or Work. And you pull the lovers card in the "how you view yourself" position, or something similar. How would that influence the reading?
I mean...sometimes, if I pulled a similar card, in a similar position, i'd ask the person if perhaps their lover were distracting them from work, or was dissatisfied with their job..or..if their was an affair at work. But...sometimes, (especially when reading for a close friend, or yourself), you know that none of those scenarios fit. So...in that case, I'd normally say..."Something is distracting you from work, or capturing your attention away from your job", because I have that other meaning of the lovers card..."temptation" or "distraction".
The reason it also can indicate balance and duality, to me, is that there are both sexes represented, one with symbols of a moon, one with symbols of a sun...one looking one way, the other looking another. Etc.
Just exchanging ideas here :)

Since that's what the Lovers card means to me if those scenarios didn't fit I wouldn't pull the card.

That is so true with my cards, they know how to show me what they want to tell me by picking out the simplest impactive cards and I always get the message very clearly from them. Ive tested them in the past, asked again .. and sure enough the same card just pops up again and again if it is meant to.
Lovers to me is a decision, a choice between two... Very different from being in love.

Yup. I interpret the meanings so if a card represents an interpretation that doesn't fit I don't pull the card. At least that's the way it goes for me :)

buy pulling a card do you mean you pull it from the deck?? or the reading if it is pulled? Or the powers that be have never had you pull a card that seems to not apply at first glance:bug:
trying to keep up with the conversation, but somehow got lost 8O

It means if I do a reading and a meaning that I associate with a card isn't there then that card will not appear in the reading.
Another thought - meanings change. For instance when Magestya showed me a card and her meaning for it in one reading and that card made sense to me for that meaning, now that card has that meaning to me too.
