I just ordered the Thoth deck! :boing: I've been fascinated with the images for a while now, but I was a little intimidated by it. I've only read from Rider Waite type decks so this deck might be a challenge. Does any one else have it? What do you think about the deck?

I prefer my Rider Waite and Robin Wood decks but the Thoth deck is very stimulating and I can see why it is one of the most popular decks amongst occultists.
I find it harder to read than the more traditional looking decks, but I've had some good readings, it seems to 'flow' very well and the images are cool too.

Thoth is a very powerfull deck be good to get the book of Thoth if you can to read up a bit about the history surrounding the deck and what Crowley's intentions were with each card. He put a lot of work into it's creation and there are reasonings behind his alteration of the names that a lot of people don't know about. Like Strength being replaced with Lust and Temprance becoming Art. It's always goo to understand what the creator percived in his images helps you get to understand the deck better. :D It's worth looking into the symbology of the deck too.

Personally, I like the Thoth deck. However, it is a deck that one can call to easily into becomming too serious about, and thinking that the Tarot has no room to evolve forward within.
I like what Crowley did, however, I feel his ideas in regards to the origins of the Tarot are a bit off knowing what we know now. However, in his time, it is a masterpiece and still remains one of the most powerful decks today.
In the creation of my own deck, I am incorporating some of his ideas, and approach to the Tarot.

Thanks, I think I will get the book. I've never read anything by Crowley, it should be interesting.

it's the only deck that matters.
if i could have but one tarot deck, it would definitely be the Thoth. in fact, if i could only have two decks they would BOTH be the Thoth!
but i would suggest studying it hard, as it is very deep but doesn't easily yield itself to superficial usage.

Did it take you a long time to learn to read with it? Which version of Thoth deck do you have? I ordered the Swiss Crowley Large.

I absolutely adore my Thoth deck. I fell in love with it at first sight and to this day, even though I've added other decks to my collection, it's still the one I turn to for really important readings.
This deck is rather dark in nature. Like Theres said, it doesn't like to be bothered with trivial matters. It'll give you honest answers when you need them, without sugar-coating anything. It's blunt almost to the point of cruelty at times. You'll either love it or hate it. There's usually no in-between with this deck.
It's not for everyone, but if you can handle its rather temperamental energy, you'll have a deck that will take you further than any other.

I recommend that anyone using the Thoth deck buy a book called 'The Tarot Handbook' by Angeles Arrien. It's based on the Thoth deck, but would also work with other decks. I'm on my third copy already.

it didn't take me any time at all, as i don't do 'readings'.
but after 10 years of solid study with this deck i am still finding new depths within its boundaries... it is a many-layered tool.
i'm glad you got the Swiss printing. the LWB isn't much good (but who cares anyway, right?), but the colors are MUCH truer than the US Games (the "Green" one). if you try to use Crowley's reference 777 with the US Games version you'll thing you are looking at a different deck entirely!

I love my Thoth deck :) The art is great and the deck is filled with its own style of symbolism.I would suggest getting the book called "Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot" It is very well written and easy to read.

I love my Thoth deck, though I'm relatively new to it, meself - I've had friends for years who've used it, and knew what I was getting into when I ordered it. :nodnod:
Like others have said, it's dark, blunt, and doesn't "put up with no bull."
It's the deck that I don't give readings to others very often with - most people aren't ready to hear what it says. Its also the deck that I only bring when I know everyone there understands what it is to play with a deck.

I absolutely LOVE my Thoth deck, though I did have to buy special books just to get acquainted with the cards, since they are different that the RWS and the other decks based on RWS. I think the imagery is just amazing on the Thoth deck, and I refuse to use them for readings on anyone but myself. They're tied for my #2 fave (RWS is #1, its just so easy for me to connect w/) along with Revelations. I have the Gilded Tarot too but I just CANNOT connect w/them. So weird!!!
