Hi, I'm still very very ultra new to tarot cards.
What sort of things should I look for in a deck? Should I only buy a deck that "speaks" to me? What if no deck I see "speaks" to me? Should I buy those tarot decks that come in a package with a book, or buy my cards and book(s) seperately?
So many questions. Please help me tarot masters! :fpraise:
PS: Is it pronounced tarot or is the "t" silent?

I would recommend something like the Hanson Roberts, Gilded or Robin Wood deck.
I treat the last "t" as silent so that tarot rhymes with sparrow. :)

I started with two Oracle decks that were gifted to me. I was working with the Angels alot so both decks are Angel decks. I wasn't interested in tarot and didn't think I'd ever be. I was okay with this. My hubby wanted a tarot deck and bought one. I was familiar with cards and he wasn't so he asked me to give him a read with them. I did. The cards were so electrafying! I had to have a deck of my own. These are the only "true" tarot deck I own and don't feel the need to have any others (I know some collect them, etc.).
So, I'd wait until one spoke to you...there are many, many decks to choose from and there should be one or two (at least) that would really like to work with you... Just my thoughts...

Should I buy those tarot decks that come in a package with a book, or buy my cards and book(s) seperately?Seperately, as a rule. You'll probably end up reading LOTS of books.
So many questions. Please help me tarot masters! :fpraise: :lol:There are several schools of Tarot:
1) Here in the US, most decks are based on Rider Waite Smith and most books in english use that method of interpretation. That would be the reason for starting with RWS and not the fact that there are pictures on every card.
Learn to read RWS and you will be able to pick up any modern theme deck and get some kind of decent reading out of it.
2)I prefer Marseilles, myself, and find that the so-called "unillustrated" pips speak much more clearly and eloquently than RWS, but you won't find any good books in english. It's a lot of work translating!
3)Thoth is also much loved and respected. I don't hesitate to recommend it.
4)Then you have the odd decks like Etteilla and Minchiate. I would recommend starting with a regular 78-card deck and getting into these later, though if you MUST start with one of these, the Minchiate Etruria is nice and the Minchiate Fiorentine is sumptous.
PS: Is it pronounced tarot or is the "t" silent?Silent.
