(hope these are the same as you studied)
It would be great if we could all get a dicussion going on these and try some out to se what energy/emotions/insights they give us!

Wild Im glad they are the same now we can all try out the stances and putting them into a routine :D
The stances in order in the line like they are on the site are more like a routine arent they!
The only problem is I dont know all the Yoga stances  put hey we can only try..
Now Ive just made up this routine and had five rounds of it! It works really well and gest allot of energy in your higher chakras :) I did the normal Sun Halitation till I got down to downward dog then hopped forward through my legs to S Sowilo ~ which is the sun rune! and I thought totally fits.. then I went through all the 3 aett (the last 8 positions) in order until the last Dagaz ~ which is the ying and yang rune!
Then after I had completed these I dropped down again into downward dog and carried on the Sun Halitation to the end/ & repeated these stances all over again 5 times :) It does get all your energy levels right up! :D
Try it and see what you think :)

I haven't tried any of it yet, but you've really got my curiousity up. I'll get started within the next few days.
I began yoga 5 years ago for chronic pain - as it turned out, I literally had a broken back and no one was listening to me until I started to lose my leg. Exercise had always helped with the pain but it got so bad I couldn't do the walking and weight work that I had been doing. I started about a year before I had back surgery and was doing a few of the gentle poses three weeks after surgery. I was always afraid I would gain weight when I had to stop the aerobic work. I have the kind of metabolism that makes me have to exercise. Not only have I not gained a pound, but I think I look better (I tend to develop really big muscles). I learned from White Lotus' (Tracey Rich & Ganga White) Total Yoga and have progressed to power yoga. I have gotten most of the muscle and nerve back in my leg and my foot is only about 20 percent paralyzed now, can't even notice it.
Since I'm the kind of person who has a very difficult time with sitting down and staying still types of meditation, my yoga is a moving meditation for me. It's done so much for my body and spirit already - I can't wait to combine it with the power of the Runes!
Silver Venus
January 24th, 2002, 12:32 PM
Im pleased your leg and foot are much better now, wow you must feel so proud to actually achieve all that on your own, the power of control over ones body is a great thing!
Runes and Yoga goes really well together, Im planning to try some more stances with the Sun Halitation tomorrow.
Has anyone tried those stances I was talking about before? I tried them again yesterday and fouind they worked really well if you chanted the name of the rune as you followed into the stance for it. It was very meditative and after I actually went and meditated with Dagaz as I felt that was calling me the most.
I cant believe fitness guru hasnt exploited it already. Can you imagine a hard core Odinist doing Yoga Runes! lol that would be funny! :p

Okay! Forward bend (Uruz), bridge, backrolls - 9 rounds. Sun Salutations -12 rounds. Chataraunga - 5 rounds. Tree pose - (Thurisaz). Standing with arms crossed - Dagaz. Sweating now? Savasana!

Well Rick Im terrible at spinning but I love riding horses and always wear my swan winged hat so I guess I must be! Freyja I bow to you! :D
About these postures ~ Wild did you try the sequence out?
I tried again this monring but just used four of the rune postures ~ The one for Dagaz, Gebo, Algix then Tiwaz at the begining and end of each salutation :D
I didnt really feel that much though ~ only from gebo this time.

Namaste' **bows**
Somewhat - what I wrote is similar to my daily workout. I start with several forward bends - depending on how much time I have - I saw the pic of the forward bend for Uruz, but that would be too much weight on my back, so I'm subbing the whole forward bends and downward dogs. Then I usually drop to backrolls, then (oops, forgot the yoga name for it) the leg lifts that work your stomach! or crunches, following by lying twists - then it's up again, as many rounds of Sun Salutations as I again have time for. I have incorporated chataraungas into them, I love them, they work everything (this is part of ashtanga yoga) - I will do trikonasanas, warriors, and lunges in between. I used the Dagaz pose while resting in between salutations. I always do my tree before finishing because it took me so blessed long to master it! and I now meditate on Yggdrasil and Thurisaz as I hold it. Then I go back down to do a sitting twist, cobbler and lotus. I could not do a full lotus before my surgery. Can't hold it for all too long, either :T but I can do them! Then I might do a plough if my neck can stand it, then meditate in savasana for as long as I can get away with.
I printed off that site and need to study it some more, we can discuss further adjustments to the routine. I find it a bit awkward to try to look at a diagram while I'm practicing! I have been using Freya Aswynn's CD for practice, it's wild  !
Lavender
January 25th, 2002, 03:44 PM
I did try the sequences last night. I think I could have gotten more out of it if I had printed out the poses rather than look through my book. It was a bit disjointed having to refer to the diagram & flip through the book. After I did 3 sets, it was much better. I'm looking forward to going straight through tonight. I think I'll try chanting the sounds along with the poses.

...the vision I get is of all of you tying yourselves into pretzels, & then craning your necks around to look at the book or printout... makes me think of 'Twister'... :rotfl:
<ahem> OK... Wildchild, you've hit the nail on the head... if you're going to do Rune Stadha, it's not going to be very effective if you don't 'sing' the Rune's name as you assume it's shape... you might think of it as your mantra...

Rick, do you have the book: Futhark: A Handbook of Rune Magic by Edred Thorsson that these stances on the site are from? I have a question...what is a Galdr? Underneath that title, it has, what I think, are sounds that you're supposed to make?
ex:
Galdr:
tiwaz tiwaz tiwaz
tiiiiirrrrr
tu ta ti te to
tur tar tir ter tor
ot et it at ut
(Tyr Tyr)
Tiiiiirrrrr
Is this a chant that I'm supposed to do while doing the pose?

Yup... that's what Galdr is... Runesinging... the sound ('sacred breath') that accompanies a Rune working... and that's what Rune Stadha is, a Rune working, to raise the energy of a Rune by assuming it's shape & singing it's name or the sound associated with it...
There is at least one thread about Galdr around here somewhere...
Ya know, this thread might better fit in Magic & Ritual...
...but what the hay...

I've seen the Galdr chants written out like that, but how does one find out what it's supposed to sound like? Is it just a matter of doing a monotone type chant, like Om? I have the Freya Aswynn CD and she just sings (or screams! :scream: ) the names of the runes.

You may have noticed that my 'job title' is Runesinger... rather then Runechanter, or Runespeaker... when you hit the right frequency (pitch) that resonates with a particular Rune's energy, you'll feel it... like feeling the vibrations from a tuning fork... you can try to imitate Ms. Aswynn (not saying I can do any better, but I don't think she hits each one dead on), or experiment on your own... '^'
'Course, I guess I could of called myself a 'Galdr-boy'... 8O

Well - I am an alto/contralto so as long as none of them require a high pitch I think I can pull it off.....I discovered a while ago that I can make my whole throat vibrate so I can put some power into these.
Although, I did manage to hit the high note in Stevie Nicks' "Garbo" in the car last night on the way home, was rather pleased with myself.....:o

Ive just been searching to try and find a list but no success im afriad ~ i did find a page with the following deffinitions that I thought would be of interest ;)
RUNE GALDR
Verbal magic through the intonation of mantras (incantations, enchantment), using rune symbols as a method of objectifying the verbal content and hence objectifying magical intent.
STADHA GALDR
Or RUNIC YOGA, is an active system of magic developed in Germany in the early 20th C., and consists of adopting runic postures (runen-asana) or gestures (runen-mudra) for magical effect within the rune shaman's subjective/ objective environment.

I'm not bothering much with checking the book. It seems that some of the asanas were very easy to relate to a rune, such as Uruz, Daegaz, Sowilo and Thurisaz. I have that wild CD that came with Freya Aswynn's Northern Mysteries and Magick, and believe it or not, I'm using it for yoga. It keeps me focused on the runes.
Of course, my son thinks I'm really crazy now.......

Yeah Ive picked up a few but still need to brush up on them too.
When I first learnt Yoga and praticised by myself I got a big piece of plain paper, then drew stick men on it to represent the stances. I think Im going to do this again for these rune stances.
That way you dont have to keep stopping and looking down at a print out or book, you just tac it to the wall then look ahead at your next stance.
That rune music sounds great Freyja Im going to have to get me some one day to spook my bf into thinking im with the coconuts :D

You could also show him the picture of Ms. Aswynn on the back of the book (in the new edition it's the front cover) to enhance the effect.......
Seriously, when you first listen to it you almost want to laugh - but I also use it for meditation and it now puts me right to sleep! It's called Songs of Yggdrasil and if you can't find the edition that includes the CD I think you may be able to get it from Llewellyn.

Sorry, Wild. I've been spending way too much time in Just Silly and it's a carryover. Thanks for getting things back under control!:D
I need to spend more time studying the ones that were not as easy to pick up - and I also want to learn the ones done with the hands from the site that one of you sent a few weeks ago because they can be done anywhere.
Have you ever heard of NLP? (Neuro-linguistic programming) It's a method of meditation/affirmation/thought changing that involves using words and some physical actions, such as forming a positive thought and touching two fingers together to remind you of it when you are stressed, etc. I think that these could easily and successfully be incorporated into that - in fact, I think that they would work even better.

There are quite a few different aspects to NLP, so we'll just discuss this one. Basically, you meditate and focus on a good feeling, such as confidence or calm, creating and raising energy for that feeling and come up with a physical gesture to "seal" the feeling. You practice this until you feel that you've got a handle on it, then, when a stressful situation comes up, you perform that gesture. They teach either touching your thumb and middle fingers together or lightly touching yourself on the shoulder.
This is very similar to mudras used in yoga to "seal" your meditation and/or prayers.
I think it would be great to use the runes, because you could make the hand position for whichever rune applies to the situation.
Another piece that you have probably heard of is playing a silly song in your head or imagining the person causing the stress in a silly position such as shrinking or naked and on the toilet. One time I was in court and this idiot attorney was being loud and obnoxious - and the only song that came to mind was Metallica's Free Speech for the Dumb (it only has one lyric - free speech for the dumb, free f- speech). It was all I could do not to burst out laughing at him!
Anthony Robbins also teaches some pieces of this in his courses. Hope you find this useful!

:) So.......how are we doing? I still haven't made much progress with learning new ones. I have doing the easier ones, such as Algiz, Uruz and Sowilo, which kind of come up naturally in the course of the asanas anyway. I'm still finding it helpful to use the first track on Freya Aswynn's CD during practice to have some sense of order.

Ick I lost my chart in the move and since then havent done any at all )slap my hands!) But now as you have reminded me once more I think Im going to make a new one and make a new routine up with runes like Berkana, Kenaz, Wunjo, Gebo, Sowilo.. and tell you what order I put them into when Ive got it figured out myself :D

I haven't tried Berkana:huh:and just picturing it in my mind without looking at the chart makes me think it might be a little harder. Wunjo is another easy one as well as Kenaz and Thurisaz. We've discussed before how it's hard to try and look at the chart and I'm still doing them from memory. I'm still pretty fixated on Uruz since I continue to draw on it for healing.

Hmm now youve got me thinking too ;) I cant remember where I copied my original chart from, but what i did was a made a really big one and stuck it on the wall so I didnt have to look down but striaght across.
Berkana is easy and very like Teiwaz as you stand striaght with both your arms pointing down and outstreched...
I really love Uruz too, it does feel very storng and healing :)
