My grandfather Charles Epps has been in the hospital in Knoxville TN for 2 weeks now and that's how long he's been without food. It started with intestinal blockage due to scar tissue from an intestinal surgery 8 years ago.

His 1st surgery fixed that, then they went back in abt a week ago due to intestinal leakage and fixed that and now a few days ago they inserted a feeding tube because he couldn't hold down food.

Talked to my mother thismorning and the latest is that the Hospital called my grandmother at 2 am last night. They gave papaw some apple juice and jello last night and it made him sick. They gave him a dose of phenigren (?) and that made him hallucinate and the nurse found him sitting up in bed. They were afraid he would try to get up and called mom to get permission to put a light velcro restraint across his waist. My uncle called this morning to see how he is doing and they said he is resting, but now they can't take the restraint off without a family member there. So he is going to get my grandma down there this morning.

Now we're :sadman: for more news.

My father and I talked this weekend and we both strongly feel that my grandfather isn't coming out of this. But I really hope that he does. My grandfather is such a great person, not a wrong thing can be said against he or my grandmother. They are the only set of grandparents I've ever known since both my fathers parents died before I was born.

I've been working on my family's genealogy and for the past year something has told me to only work on my grandfathers side for now so I could get as much done as I could so he could see it before is died since he's 77. I had planned to send the paperwork back with my mother after she comes to visit at the end of April which now she may not be coming.

I'm really torn up. I called his hospital room last week and got to talk to him for 3 short minutes to tell him I love him before he ran out of breath. I'm going to call again today in hopes of being able to talk to himn again.

That's why I posted them.

Yes I do look very much like my grandfather don't I, that 's what the family says. I was always papaws girl when I was little. Thanks so much everyone.

UPDATE: I called his hospital room abt 10:30 central time & spoke with my grandmother & uncle. They said he was doing ok and currently getting a breathing treatment so he was unable to talk to me.

I'll keep you posted.

Sending healing energy to your grandfather! :hugz:

Thanks Minerva, I spoke to my mother last night and her and my grandmother had just gotten home from the hospital. They said my grandfather was still holding down his jello & broth dinner when they left so that's good. He had finally come down off that medicine from the night before and was feeling better. It's a start.

My mother just emailed me with an update. Here's a copy of the email. Please keep him in your thoughts.

"Yesterday was not a good day. Daddy developed a fistula (?) and it leaked fluids and caused a huge wound. The dr. tried 2 or 3 bags until he found one to fit tightly and then they packed and did whatever to this wound, and added another suction tube to get out as much of the liquid as possible. The took him off the liquid pain meds and put him on a pill. This will also cut down of the amount of fluid being produced. They want to get him on solid food which will cut down on the amount of fluid also. If they can close all the leaks and get rid of the fluid, he can start healing. He is not talking out of his head, and he finally slept last night. The dr. is doing a long test today to find out about these leaks and where they are located. Hope he does not need any more surgery. That's all I know right now."

It does seem like a never-ending spiral at times. Everything the doctors do to fix one thing causes another problem that they have to fix somehow.

More healing energies sent for your grandpa, strength energies for your mom in taking care of him, wisdom for the doctors in healing him, and compassion for the nurses in hleping him.

Thanks Lunacie, My mother, uncle & grandmother are down at the hospital (an hr away) daily. I really feel for my grandmother, they've been married abt 57 years I think.

I hope you all aren't minding all the updates because here is thismornings email update from my mother. It looks like all our prayers & energy are working. (warning: a touch graphic)

"Daddy was put on solid food yesterday and last night they were able to remove the suction tube because the waste is thickening and would not pass through the tube. That's what they want. He slept through the night. He had 2 breathing treatments some time last night and did not have the congestion in his chest this morning. Waiting to find out the results from yesterday's tests."

Thanks so much for the replies, I called my mother and she said they had just left the hospital and my grandfather was eating and doing very well to give him a call. So I did and he sounded so much better than the last time I spoke to him. He has been eating everything the staff can bring him for 2 days now and says he feels much better. He has lots of healing to do and will probably be in the hospital another week so far.

I really hope this is the end of this trial for him and that he gets to go home soon.

I just wanted to pop back in here and say that my grandfather is continuing to do well. He has moved to a different part of the hospital that is similar to in home care except in the hospital for healing. There are lots fo things with his healing (not pretty) that my grandmother just can't take care of. His insurance is paying 100% of all this hospical care so thats a relief also.

Thanks again everyone for your aid, I am deeply thankful.

Wow, I am amazed that your grandfather was able to make such a marvelous comeback. He must be a very special guy with a strong desire to live. Yay for him!

Lunacie, Yes but he's isn't completely out of harms way yet. I spoke to him on the phone tonight and he said "I've got alot of problems." You just hate to hear someone talk that way.
