I am very fond of the Tarot.I am sort of a collector.I confess, I love the art-work.But I am curious as to what deck is right for me.How do I know this?Should a certain deck just jump out at me or is it a- I will know it when I feel it sort of thing?????Is it customary to use only one certain deck or is the rule /a variety is a spice of life apply?????Anyone's input is welcome

I think this is the most difficult decision to make in regards to tarot.

My opinion would be find a deck that the artwork really draws you to it again and again. ....your favorite deck. Then try a couple spreads with it. How accurate is it? Does it speak to you are leave you cold? I know when I was seeking a deck, I bought a couple that I was really drawn to and then attempted a couple readings from each. The most accurate and the one I felt most at ease with is the one I went with. (which happens to be the Robin Wood tarot)

Definately go with one that appeals to you and speaks to you on that sub-conscious, intuitive level.

i like to collect tarot decks too. i have 17 at the moment, but i only use two or three.
i think alot depends on why you are collecting. now this is JUST my opinion, but...
there are an awful lot of tarot decks out there right now, everything froms vampires to baseball to fairy tales.
but there is only a small percentage of these that i would consider 'real' tarot decks. serious working decks based on the traditional symbols of the tarot.
so i collect decks for the art, or the theme, or whatever else draws me to them as a collectible thing.
but i have to have a strong 'feel' for a deck before i will purchase it for serious use. this usually requires me to play around with it first. if i find that my meditations are strengthened or enhanced through it's use, i will buy it.
and it's not neccessary that this type of deck be pretty, or by a famous artist (those usually DON'T work for me in fact). just strong imagery, with deep symbolism that connects me to the universal archetypes.
end of ramble.

I totally agree about the "feel" of the deck. I have many (many) decks and when it comes time to do a reading, I end up gravitating to the same two.

My biggest problem with the cards is that I have very small hands and shuffling is a problem for me. When I do a reading for someone, I do the shuffling instead of handing the deck over to the person and it can get quite embarassing when I drop half the deck on the floor!

I went to a psychic one time (my mentor!) who once handed me a deck of cards that to me reminded me of the "trial sizes" of products. They were so tiny, yet I could read them well. I shuffled those things like nobody's business!!! :T

Needless to say, I bought one for myself and now just keep them in my purse at all times. They are so small and my purse is so big that no one knows they are in there! Great for when I'm around the "closed-minded" of the world!!!! :nyah:

I remember seeing the miniature deck in a magazine once..can't remember which one though....hummmm....I think I would like to add them to my collection...Do you remember where you found them WtchyChick??......At the present, I am working with the Instant Tarot.I feel like I am doing the right thing when I use this deck...Maybe because its the closest to "Tarot for dummies" that I can find.....lol....Although I must confess, I don't think it is the right deck for me....So I guess I will just go from deck to deck trying to find "my deck."
The first time I ever had my cards read, The lady used a regular deck of cards. And she was so accurate on everything....But I did not realize it till years later........

WtchyChick13, what is the name of your miniature deck? I have the same problem too with shuffling. I don't think it's because my hands are small but I think I'm just clumsy. :D I love the deck I'm using now but would love to get a smaller deck to carry with me.

The deck I keep in my purse is a mini version of the Connolly Deck. I originally got it on Amazon.com however, I just checked and they seem to be sold out. (I got it a few years ago.)

I know that Llewellyn has a bunch (NewWorlds.com) and you can get a free first copy of their catalog or you can order online.

You can also go to U. S. Game Systems: http://www.usgamesinc.com/categoryFrame_T.cfm?Category_ID=251 who publishes thousands of the decks and see what they have. (You can also get a free reading from them online too!) As a matter of fact, right now on their front page, there is a deck featured called the "tiny tarot"! How appropriate!!! :)

I hope this helps guys! I will be more than happy to look up some other places for you too if you need it.

Happy Reading!!!!!!!!

OOOOooo, I'm gonna have to check that out! I find that a lot of times, I will check out what is new online and then head on over to my local Borders Books or Barnes & Noble and check out their stash! Borders really added a lot to their Tarot selection.

Over the Winter holidays, I was looking in the Waldenbooks that's here and couldn't find one deck in their New Age/Metaphysical section. Turns out they moved all of their astrology and divination tools near the art section and mixed it up with the art books! I'm still trying to figure that one out!!! LOLOL :ugh:

(Ahhhh! I feel a Borders trip coming on!!) LOL :blushake:

My local Walden's keep their tarot decks behind the counter so you have to ask to look at them. :( I love to just explore in Schusters. They have an entire section dedicated to Tarot. They must have over 50 decks on the shelves. :D

Borders put theirs in a display cabinet so you still have to ask someone to open it up--but I can't blame them. Too many people were coming in and opening the packs and leaving the empty boxes!!! People never cease to amaze me.

However I will say this, at least they put the display cabinet next to the section and don't hide their cards. Barnes & Noble started doing that (behind the checkout) but they leave one or two on the shelves. What is so rediculous is that if you do want to see a deck and say, (hypothetically) there is a line behind you...those waiting would not be too thrilled to wait as we, the Tarot folk of the world examined the decks! What a business they are losing!!!!!!! :p

I guess it's the seller in me, but I hate to see ANYONE lose a sale due to complete stupidity!!! LOLOL :D
