... Or when is a sign a sign?

For many of us, the use of signs, symbols and sigils is a must in magic. But why is it so? Is it because we put enough intent (or lack of a better word - faith) into the signs/symbols/sigils? Or that they already come with their inbuilt meaning(s)?

So, do you use them in magic? If so, why? If not, why (too)?

Cheers,
Jolantru

Reality as text.

Insert______ into the grand narrative, if you think the plot needs a rewrite

To me they already come with their inbuilt meanings , I guess. The following is my reasoning in thinking this:
In my personal experience I have used them because of information passed down to me saying they work for this or that. Your question really made me think about it a bit and I think that I held trust in them because of the relationship of the people who have taught me. I never once doubted the information they gave me because I witnessed many successes they obtained by the practices.

To me it's kind of like a 'trade mark'. Something you look at and know right away what it is for, and what it represents. However because of repeated long term use they also becomes a 'beacon' in that it's saying "I need (this kind of) energy here, now!" therefore it attracts the type of energy need for what ever your doing.
Hope that makes sense.

A symbol becomes a symbol when one person finds or creates meaning in an image. The picture in and of itself holds no power. It's more of a visual aid to remind you of certain things and help you focus.
