Yeah, it's tough Yema, and I guess it'll get worse for you, cause the Olympics start Feb. 8th and those are broadcasted on NBC as well.

Let me ammend, my above statment saying, I don't think Russell Crowe sucks. I find him quite dreamy and I just LOVED Gladiator, but I don't think any movie should beat out LOTR this year. That movie is just too damn good to be beaten. My opinion, yes, but I think everyone should agree with me! So there!!!!! :p  :rotfl:

I didn't see LOTR or Beautiful Mind. I do like Crowe, but LOTR looks excellent. Don't know who I would have rooted for.
Yes, Vincent D'Onofrio is sexy. I caught his show a while back, it's quite good.

Not only did they not win A SINGLE AWARD, but they were completely ignored in the pre-show and on those little in between head shots and table views. It was like the Hollywood Foreign Press was trying to pretend they weren't even there.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT! I can't imagine that anyone could actually see LOTR and not vote for it!!!!!!!!

I can't believe I wasted the whole evening watching that load of garbage. If Peter Jackson couldn't win for Directing then Ron Howard definitely should have. What were those people thinking????

I am shocked. :(

You know, even though I didn't see it.....I am shocked to know LOTR was ignored at the awards. Didn't it get good reviews with the critics? Those I know who have seen it thought it was wonderful. After this thread, I'm really anxious to see the movie now.

How long do the Olympics last???
If I miss 'West Wing', I will just explode!!!!

Hey-I need some advice. I have a date w/ my 8 yr. old nephew to see 'Harry Potter' & he's asked me to take him to see LOTR, too. Is it o.k. for an 8 yr. old or should I tell him to wait a while?
He's read the HP books. He's pretty advanced for his age (Montessore education) & has already studied the Civil War. I want to see LOTR, too, but I don't want my bother & sister-in-law beating up on me because the film gave the kid nightmares.:bad:

I've seen LOTR five times. Four of those times, people got up and left with their kids. The last time, a little girl left in tears. I don't think it's scary at all, but one of my friends watched most of the movie behind her fingers. I think it just depends on the person.

I'm not sure that helps.

Ok my friend went to see LOTR and normally he'll take Morgaine to see anything. I wouldn't let him take her to see it and when he came back he said he was happy she stayed home. He said at least 1/2 the movie theater got up and left with their kids.

Thanks.
Just one thing: is it violent? bloody? does it have nudity? or is it just scary? so I can give a reason to my sister-in-law for taking/not taking the squid to see it.

My 8 year old step-daughter went to see it while visiting her mom in Germany. Apparently she said it wasn't that bad, but her mom kept slapping her face to cover her eyes and that annoyed her. I don't know. I haven't seen it. But I'm also talking about a kid who has seen plenty of horror movies in her past. And has seen and loved the HP movie. Like Hedwig said: It depends on the person.

LOTR is NOT a kids movie! It IS violent, and dark, just like the books. There is no nudity or sex, or language to worry about, so you're covered there.
But, like everyone else said, it depends on the person. If your nephew doesn't have any issues with darker themes or scary movies, he should be fine. Might not want to sit still the whole time though. Even I had a hard time doing that. ;)

I personally loved the film. Too bad it got shafted award-wise.

So if my kids love horror good choice but if they get nightmares leave them home. Gotcha on that I may let my kids see it but will not bring my friends daughter she had mega nightmares from Halloween. I still haven't been forgiven for that one.

That's what I think, but I could be way off. :D
It is by no means a horror movie, but it has adult themes and as I said, it is dark and violent. It's an amazing film, totally worth watching, but it's not a happy film. I don't think it is suitable for children under the age of 7 or 8, and I would caution those with children under the age of 12. Of course, the first time I saw it, there was a gaggle of 10-12 year old boys in the audience, and they absolutely loved the film. Meanwhile, the 16 year old boys next to me were freaking out every time the wraiths showed up.
I also had an experience with some kids, who were all under 8, the second time I saw it. They cried and screamed throughout a large portion of the film, and their parents wouldn't take them outside. :( I felt bad for them, they were really scared.
In the end however, I think the choice is best left up to the parent. happy viewing! :)

My 4 year old watches things that make me have nightmares and laughs!!! Halloween, Freddy, Aliens, Rumplestiltskin ect..... We have told him since the begining they are all make believe and he has watched me work with wax and make-up before. He's a great subject for cosmetic bruises doesn't move till you tell him you are done then he wants to see the bullet wounds and bruises. That's the curse of being the child of a theater major. You become more interested in the effects and the acting then the thrill factor. :( At least he doesn't wake with nightmares!:) He loves vampire movies too! The kid laughed through Hellraiser!!!!! I frequently cowered behind my hubbie he laughed and wanted me to recreate some of it. It got me looking though to see if I could. Past my abilities!

Well, I brought my 9 year old. TWICE. He wasn't scared, and he's had the books read to him and he's read the hobbit on his own. So, there's no problem there. In fact, my son sounds a bit like your nephew, he's kinda smart for his age too. However, my brother, the dumb a$$ he can be, went to see it and brought my niece, who's 5, and is scared of the fire whistle. Those dark riders can get very scary.

As for the violence, yeah, there's battle scenes, but the colors are very muted so it's not like blood spurting everywhere or anything.

It's such a COOL movie! :D
