View Full Version : A stone for anxiety?

I have a social anxiety disorder but I'm not on any medication right now because for money reasons. Might there be a stone out there that I could carry with me that might help take some of the edge off? I haven't been able to talk to anyone in my classes for weeks now. I've been using a dragon necklace as a focus point so far, just as something to hold and touch and remind myself that I'm ok and I'll make it. Perhaps there is a stone I could do this with that might give me an extra boost to help fight this.
Thankyou all :)

I don't know anything about stones, but here's a link to a site that might help you. There are natural supplements that are just as effective as some antianxiety drugs. I linked you to the depression section because those supplements are actually better for your type of anxiety. I hope that this helps.

I think it may be also a personal choice but I benefitted lots from wearing aquamarine. Apparently it is also called the 'courage' stone and it is said that it helps calming and strengthening the nervous system. Happens to be one of my most favourite stones so I may not be neutral in this. ;) I hope you'll get other suggestions as well and then make your own personal pick.
Take care.

I wear a combination on me simply in my pocket in a small sachet. It's a combination of tree moss agate, blue lace agate and yellow tigers eye. It works great for my ability to communicate and feel comfortable and confident in myself. Whenever I'm going to go into a new setting with people I don't know or I have something challenging to do that involves communicating I make sure to have this with me.
I usually will place the stones in my tibetan singing bowl before I use them when I know it's going to be a challenging day.

Hi Silvana,
I truly sympathise with how you must be feeling atm, as I suffer with anxiety too...it causes all sorts of physical and emotional troubles for me to the point where I wasn't stepping outside my front door this time last year out of fear. The main things that have helped me over the past year include crystals, but it's not soley one thing that helps me. The main thing that helps me is St John's Wort and I strongly recommend this! I take the Kira one-a-day brand. Yes, it does cost, and I too can't actually afford to take it, but if I don't take it then I go and hide in a corner and never actually do any work to earn money to live...so I actually can't afford *not* to take it!! A word of warning...don't switch brands halfway through as each brand is put together in different ways and can be dramatically different.
The St John's Wort makes me happy again, gives me courage to face my fears and get on with life. A lot of my fear/anxiety is social-based too, so I do understand :) It's a bugger to get over but it seems the best thing to do is to throw yourself in there and keep trying - although if you're anything like me, this is the last thing you want to hear!
D'you mind if I bend your ear a mo, and tell you what things helped me when I was really needing help with my anxiety most??
I went to see a cognitive therapist who helped me work out where this anxiety came from. This has been extremely helpful too, as I now try to spot and stop destructive mental patterns before they spiral out of control.
Meditation has been a god send, too (pardon the pun!). I have a group that meets once a week that I go to whenever I can. It costs just £5 for an evening. Maybe you have something similar near you? Mine meets above a crystals shop. This is the first group I've ever been to completely on my own, but I *had* to, to build my confidence. I met many like-minded people here who help give me courage to be me and explore what I like...the end result being that I'm not so anxious about being me (the root of some - if not all? - social anxiety). The meditations help me chill out and massively reduce my anxiety. When I was at my worst last year, meditation was something I could do at any time, any place, and it would provide me with immense relief from anxiety. The most absorbing method is to get hold of a meditation CD (spoken), carry it around with you in a walkman and listen to it whenever you can on headphones (blocking out noise).
Re crystals...think about what the root cause of your anxiety ist and try to treat that with a crystal. Here are some of my current favourites - although I'm new to crystals still.
I use hematite to keep me calm (and it eases physical tension - do you get this when anxious?).
Amethyst helps me keep in touch with my 'higher self' or my intution - it brings out my logical voice in my head which can be a bit irritating, but it's *always* right, so listen to it!! :D
Amber: this seems to brighten my mood a little. I take things less to heart when wearing amber.
I've just bought some citrine, so will see how this goes, but others have recommended to help brighten mood.
Blue lace agate is a gentle stone which helps calm me sometimes. Should help expression/communication as it's blue too.
My new fave is Rhodochrosite...it's for healing the inner child - heart and solar plexus chakras. It contains these colours: gold for wisdom, orange for creativity and pink for love. Helps heal emotional wounds and traumas so you can then hopefully overcome the cause of your anxiety?
Something else that helps my anxiety ... learn to be me! So try new things that you're drawn to. Don't worry too much about logic - just follow your heart. This doesn't necessarily have to involve other people to start with. Just get yourself doing something. YOu'll feel proud of yourself for doing something, pick up courage, stop hiding away, and have something new to talk about with people that you eventually start finding the courage to meet :)
Hope I haven't waffled on too much. Just thought there's so much more I have to offer here than to just give you a few crystal names. Hope that's ok!...x

As you seem to find the dragon a helpful enity yuo could also carry a piece of Dragon Stone. I have a variety of stones and crystals I use for certain types of stress. I have found as I am a dragon the dragon stone is a good fit for me.

Thankyou so much everyone, keep it coming. :)
I'm going to be going through my large stone collection and seeing if I have any of these and if I not I'll see what I can pick up from the local pagany stores.
And I think I might try the St. John's Wart as well.
I keep everyone posted as I go with this. Ick.

dragon stones were mentioned, as well as malachatie, pyrite, aventurine, rhodonite and aquamarine.
all of them excellent
if you have maney issues and anxiety / social anxiety you will need to find inexpensive stones too
try a combination of: ametrine (http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/ametrine.msnw), blue lace agate (http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/chalcedon1.msnw), rhodonite (http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/rhodonite.msnw) (that contains the black manganese), a orange apophylite heulandite (http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/zeoliteheulandite.msnw) and green (dyed or natural) agate or grn aventurine (http://http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/aventurine.msnw). have them in a medicine bag with you
in your case also i find sunstone (http://de.msnusers.com/czechwoodsgems/sunstonesonnenstein.msnw) to be a great helper; if you dont know where to get the stones, pm me

Hi again,
Any joy with any of the crystals mentioned? I'd be interested to know how you get on... I could learn some more too!
Glad you're considering the St John's Wort as well.
Best of luck x

I haven't had a chance to get to the pagan shoppe yet, this week is finals week so I'm booked solid and I'm moving into a new place this weekend. Next week though I hope to get them and I'll keep you updated. :)
