At the more mundane level its a symbol of the masculine fertile energy. At the higher spiritual and transcendental level of the Hindu belief it is the omnipresent force of the Universe that is in all Reality, and the primeval Creative energy.

We have one that looks like this guy below.

Mine has less red but I had never seen anything like it before and felt the need to have it. Thank you HetHert.

shiva lingam, originally from the ganges and the narmaada rives, is crafted (mostly) in vedic tradition, where the craftman-ship is handed from the guru to the student.
shiva (fire / light) lingam (tower, colon) translates to tower/colon of light/fire. the form is believed to represent the maskuline fertile energy, while the patterns are said to represent the yoni, the female fertile energy. the shiva-lingams are powerful (spiritual) energy generators. in some traditions, they are believed to be represantatives of the soul, and therefore may be used for soul-works. in any case, if a lingam is calling out to you, it is an honour and pleasure to get it for yourself, and work its powerful energies. regardless of the soul-connection, where scholars believe that only ONE lingam can rpresent your soul, i have seen loads of cases where a people can be happy with various shiva-lingams, for each has its own vibe.
quality wise there are two basic kinds of shiva lingams: the polished ones, and the semi-polished or rough ones. the latter are less impressive from their looks, but non the less very powerful. the polished ones of course, like tumbled stones, shine beautifully and are soft to the skin.
previosly, the ganges or narmaada (both sacred rivers in India) shiva-lingams, were all "made" by the river solemnly, but of course nowadays, most of the stones (pretty much all of them actually) are precrafted (shaped) by man. some of them though get their finish in the rivers, adding the power of those sacred rivers to the stone - a kind of blessing indeed. unfortunately now the shiva-lingams sometimes are industrially produced, disregarding the old vedic ceremonies - yet sold at the pretty much same elevated prices, as the respectfully formed ones.
mineralogy: quartz conglomerate with agate and basalt
chakra: the soul, aura, especially ch 4 (heart / anahata)
