My best friend emailed me today, to tell me he met someone I used to know, at a party. He recognized him from a description, and because I told him at one time, that this person..Victor..used to work out at the same gym as him. Obviosly, the person mentioned their name, and that they used to work out at that gym, and my best friend put two and two together, and remembered me speaking of victor. So..anyway...my best friend in the whole world...says.."I believe we have a mutual acquaintance".

Maybe I'm just being really oversensitive...but..in a way, I feel slighted. I mean..an acquaintance implies a casual relationship. An acquaintance can be a friend of a friend, or a person you work with, or someone you bowl on the same league with. Isn't it? It is a big understatement, to call your best friend in the whole world..."A mutual acquaintance" isn't it?

I don't know..i kinda wish he'd said..."oh! I think you know my friend, Jean." or better yet.."Oh...I think you know my BEST friend, Jean".

Or am I just completely oversensitive?

maybe, my friend or my best friend is to possessive and challenging. Whereas, our mutual or we have a mutual, shares and is friendlier. As to the acquaintance part, it to could equalize the playing field.

Also, it is the more common way to say such a thing.
