RnR has my address, Carmelo gave it to him I think. So does Mystique, Kaylara, and Bluecat. But for this purpose, I'll send it to Mol in a PM. You guys are the greatest, and anybody and everybody that helps out will get a little homeade present from me. It may not be much, but I don't believe in getting something for nothing.
Maybe I'll send you all a pitcher of KY lemonade! :bigredgri Careful though, it has a bit of a kick! ;)
BTW - I put up pics of me & Carmelo & my kids on the Pictures thread, if anyone wants to see me in all my sloppy glory! :D

I have been doing this for about a year now.
Since I have been single (and quite available - hint, hint), I have been going out to eat quite often.
(Did I mention that I was available?)
Anyway, about once or twice a month, when I go out, I pick an older couple sitting nearby and ask the server to offer them desert - on my tab. It doesn't even have to be a couple.
The smiles and thanks I get from them are terrific. Most don't eat it there but, they accept my gift in a "go box". Sometime all I get is a wave from across the room But that's just fine.
When I get home and lay down to sleep, I smile. I had done something special. And that makes me feel really good - great actually.
Try it. It feels really good.

I think that is wonderful. I really like the warm gooey feeling that I receive for doing something special to brighten someone's else's day. Just think what a nicer place this whole world would be if everyone had the consideration to think of someone else at small occassions that were presented before them.
I think it is contagious. I have seen grumpy people crack a really warm smile simply because I took the time to offer them a thank you for holding the door open for me.
That smile lasts......
Any hope of changing the world one person at a time?? Kinda reminds me of the old coke commercial... I'd like to buy the world a coke....(singing totally off key) lol
Smiles and ((((hugs)))) to ya!

I'm all choked up (Sniff) a very nice thing indeed. Perhaps we should consider a nice gesture for a certain red head in our own community, maybe someone even has an old usable computer they'd like to get rid of. Hint, hint. :D Failing that, I'd be willing to chip in a few measly Canuck dollars.. Just a thought, Hee,hee ;)

I have an old 486, but it didn't survive the y2k thing very well. It only works half the time.... otherwise it runs okay from what I can gather, I didn't lose too much of the old files.
But the canuck buck sounds like a plan too. :)

I can pitch in for shipping. Dextra, Carmello. could you rebuild it if needed.
This is, in fact, a community that can pull together if we put our minds to it.
This is all about doing somthing good within our community.
Someone had once mentioned doing something outside the Pagan community to show our heartfelt outreach but, we could do something meaningful within our community first. Then we shall be prepared to give outside and state our name.

Reanna, Talked with Mol today. Seems I remembered an old P2 120 I have in storage. I have never plugged it in because my ex bought it from work and it was given to me when we split (if she wants to bitch about it, then let her). I don't think it is need of repairs. Save your PC for the future. I feel good about this.
Dextra, Carmello? Don't say goodbye just yet. And this is neither a Handfasting present nor, charity. This is the community pulling together for those we love - understand that???
Mol, I have the box and intend to ship Monday. What I don't have are as follows:
Monitor

The PC is equiped with Windows 98, 32 Meg Ram, CD-ROM and a 1Gig HDD. I'll shell out the initial dough for shipping but ask the community to chip in where they can.

The Pagan Commmunity in general could learn something here, but in KY especially. Mari and I are both involved with the Kentucky Pagan Confederation, something that's still in the fledgling stages, but could take a lot of lessons from here.
You guys just have no idea how much this means to me. I think Carmelo's still in shock, or else he would have wanted to say something by now. I've been in and out of tears all day. You see, we both were raised struggling for everything we had, and nothing was given to us. Ever. The one thing that I grew to know is that for everything there is a price, and sooner or later, you got to pay the piper. I know nobody expects anything from us for this, but if there is ANYTHING we can do to help anyone out, just say the word.
If I could hug you all, I would. I just don't have the words to express my gratitude.

I've just been kind of lurking about and being informed of the posts you all have made. I must say that I am truly taken aback by this. I've never really felt this much sense of community even though I saw some of it in the Christian field. This much I have never had. I thank you all very much and hope to be able to give something back someday.
I would also like to thank you for your prayers and anything else you might have done for me. I attended court on Friday to find out about a temporary child custody my soon-to-be ex was trying for in the sole part. Because I had been out of my children's lives for a year, the Kentucky State Law mandates that I be allowed supervised visitation with my children. The jusdge allowed for one day a week to start getting back into my children's lives. I hope that one day the courts will see who the bad guy was! Still, this has been all about my children. I care not what she does to me, but I want to see my children. Because of you all, and the Supreme One, I'll get that. It did anger me that it would be supervised, but it's better than nothing.
So, again, thank you all very much. My love and blessings to you all. This will be very much remembered.

I'm not sure what shipping will run but will have a better idea tomorrow. I'm thinking around $40 US dollars, not much more. Mol might be shipping all the other gear. Total, let's say eighty bucks. I would ask no more then $2.00 per member.

May take me a while to catch up, just wanted to say that I love what is happening here. The other night Rant called us while we were having dinner and told us what was going on...I think Mol already was aware and pondering the possibilities. We are in a position at this time where we can help out. Mol has a virtual computer graveyard that I am always complaining about. He refuses to get rid of anything, always says we may need it. Now I guess it is paying off. I will help him get everything packed up and ready to send off today as I don't think he was able to get it ready before he left for work. It may take another little conference call to get everything organized, but I am sure that our friends will be back online in no time at all. thanks to everyone for showing true agape love when the need arises!! It's a Dell Pentium 120 with a 1.2G HDD. Not much to shake a stick at. It allready has the MS Office suite loaded on it.
The only thing that it lacks is the Monitor, Keyboard, Mose and Modem. I dunno but I think Mol has most of that under control.
I will PM you though.
Thank you for your heart.

Typical. Your offline for a couple of days, playing Grandma to your two young grandsons, and miss out on a whole great thread.
Well, it looks like the Community (note the Capital C!), has shown it's true colours. I had sent some 'help' over the weekend, and who knows, it may just be all that 'help' that has come from everyone, that has prompted this outpouring. I like to think so. Meanwhile, count me in. I don't know what a PM is - but send me one anyway!!! I don't even know how much 'about 80 bucks' is, but providing someone can convert it into numbers that make sense to me :bigredgri, I'll do me best to send cheque, visa or whatever out of my next disability payment. Meanwhile, you have all done my poor old heart good. It started with a nice glow when I read RnR lovely gesture of desert to his dining companions (we know it as 'pudding' here!!), and then grew into a great big flame as I read on down the thread.
I'm so glad I'm a part of this Community. Love you all!!

silverwitch,
figure about $1.50 to a british pound, so your pound is worth half again more than our dollar. does that make sense?

April 3rd, 2001, 08:00 PM
Accoring to a web site I visited just now, the conversion is about 1 to 1.
If you must, just send a couple of pounds, anything will help. Be sure you can spare it though. Don't want to put anyone in a bad spot.
Blessings,
Thoma

Thank you for pointing this out. It was you that offered the Canon printer. Please ship at your convenience. I am the one that is confused - this has all happened so fast. I have several that have offered to help out with shipping costs and I plan to split it equally between you, Mol and myself. Blue, if we can help, speak up and you shall be helped out as well.
Blue, thank you for your heart but, keep the noisey monster. And thank you for the SW.
You are all too much.
Thanks again,

(Manly hug back at ya)
I am keeping a tally on the total shipping costs. Whatever I get from the Community will be split between us all that have shipped. Most likely, we will be taking on a majority of that cost. I, for one, am okay with that. Dextra and Carmelo have no price tag. Anything left over will be sent back to those who contributed.

Thanks Rantnraven and Gunner for your conversion of dollars to pounds. Will send a cheque off at the weekend to the address you gave me Rnr, and do with it what you will. Just glad to help out. :bigredgri Mind you, will have to get the old brain around this conversion thing as I have just been told that I may be going on a surprise trip to Florida in the good old US of A in September. It appears that my other half has been secretely planning this for sometime, and we will be going with my son, daughter in law, and two grandsons. Not at all sure how I feel about this, as I don't know if I'm Disney World material. I also hate flying, can't stand crowds, and for my sins am not particularly fond of children, even my own, let alone going some where 'forin'!!! (You know what us Brits are like. ;) Anyone get the feeling that my other half may have misjudged my ideal holdiay!!!

while i agree that disneyworld and that ilk are not my choices for a holiday either florida is not so bad these days. some few years ago they passed a "shall issue" pistol permit law that caused great uncertainty among the criminal population as to which of their possible victims might be able to resist being assualted and robbed or worse. this caused a sharp drop in the crime rates that continues still, so outside of the major urban areas, miami and the like, florida is a fairly good place to visit and there is much worth seeing and doing away from the tourist traps such as disneyland. i'd suggest for one, an "airboat" tour of the everglades, the florida part of the great southern swamplands though you might not have to "go see the wildlife" the critters are adapting to the human environment and sometimes come to visit on their own, causing occasional mild excitement and a visit from "pesky critters inc." to remove them. (that's a real firm doing busines in florida, i've seen them on the telly). best regards and i hope you do enjoy your holiday.

Do you know how long you are going to be in Florida or, will they have to re-count once your get there?
Hehe
I'm sure you'll have a great time. If you enjoy gardening, you will love the Epcot Center. But I would take Gunners advise about the airboat, they are quite a trill.
Thank you for the contribution and blessing to you. You have a huge heart.

Thank you Gunner and Rantnrave, for the reassurance. However, I'm not sure that 'reassurance' is the right word in this case. 'Scuse me, are we talking real guns here, with real (albeit nutcases) pulling the triggers!!! Still, at least I have the comfort of Pesky Critters Inc ensuring that I won't be eaten by a crocodile (or is it alligators!) in my bed!. 'You still have to be careful', doesn't do a lot for me either!! Remember that your talking to an elderly (well, mature at any rate, OK, not that old really) lady (well female, unless you count the Gender Test) who lives in Cornwall, Rural England. You know, the land of Tally Ho (Fox Hunting and no, I don't subscribe or condone it). The place where we all talk like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, and raise our cap to 'the Gentry' whilst having our afternoon tea :bigredgri
Seriously guys, don't reassure me any more! LOL Anyway, if I've survived Europe, South Africa and Egypt (boy I could tell you some tales about Cairo!!!), I'm sure if all you people are anything to go by, I'll have a fabulous time, and by all accounts it's pretty warm and sunny in Florida (two words which I'm sure must be part of Americas dialogue, but are unfamiliar to us Brits!), which can only be good for my Arthur Itis, who is coming with me. Think I might be able to get up some enthusiasm now that the shock is wearing off. :bigredgri
PS Can I have my lemonade warm please, as it's cold enough here to start talking about Brass Monekys!

i'll not go "hyde park" on you on the subject of guns and people having/carrying them (haven't even got a soapbox) but likely you'll never see one except on a cop's belt while you're there and the people carrying them legally, under permit, are likely to be among the more courteous, well mannered folks you'll meet. my work requires that i be armed in public and i make sure to treat the people around me, who are usually not armed, with just that extra bit of courtesty. if you've "survived" those other places i'm quite certain you'll have a fine time in florida. ("egypt"?, have you ever read any of elisabeth peters' murder mysteries set in the egypt of lord carnavan's discoveries? they're quite good)
"gunner"
(and yes, "warm and sunny" is accurate for florida, sometimes even "bloody hot!", pack your summer frocks and casual clothing, much as you did for egypt though it's rather less humid in egypt. most, if not all places you're likely to go casual kit will be the order of the day. as for the heat, most public places, shops and the like, and most cars and even private homes have air conditioning so if the heat gets opressive you can escape it. the alligators, by the by, get their living mostly on small animals and stray pets, they'll not bother a human if they can avoid it.)

Standard UPS or FedEx would be my suggestion. Considering what it cost to ship the PC though, I could have driven there cheaper.
Also, make sure the box is Clearly mark with "This End Up". Bubble Jet printers have a resevour at the bottom for the excess ink when it does a cleaning. There could be a fair amount of ink in the bottom that could spill if turned over. I used to to tech support for cannon and that was a major killer for BJ printers.
Hope this helped,

Great catch, RnR  ... I used to do tech support for Gateway and people would call in with a complaint like that and I new that they had been sent a refurb printer that someone failed to clean the catch tank. We would then automatically put an order in for a "new" printer for the customer (just a special code on ten order) ...
That tank really makes a mess and there is no guarantee it will not get "flipped" at least once by the shipper ... :( ...
Those calls were really embarrassing because the customer is not stupid and they wouod know they had been sent a used machine.

Well, have a glass of Lemonade. If all else fails I still have the clunker.

Seeing as how I'm generally 10 degrees colder than anyone else I know Gunner, I shall revel in the all that heat - bring it on!! :bigredgri
Haven't read any of the author you suggested (ye Gods, I've forgotten her name already and I only read it a moment ago!!), however, will re-read your post and see if I can get something from the library. I'm not a great mystery/murder type fan, but having said that, have just read a couple of books by a guy called Phil Rickman. A bit like the Vicar of Dibly meets Cracker with Paganism thrown in. Thoroughly enjoyed them.

i think you might enjoy elisabeth peters' books, along with good adventureous stories her main character "amelia peabody" is and interesting portrait of an independent minded late victorian era english woman who feels quite free to comment on her times and society.
