There's a couple of threads in the Divination forum discussing this. I'll see if I can find the links for you.
Here they are...

No it isn't a game and if you treat it like one you're liable to regret it.
Check out the links Wildchild left.

We own one. I don't use it a lot but I've only had good encouters with it.
But be careful when using one. I wouldn't say that it is fit for children. How old is your daughter?
Old Witch - What does IMHO mean?! I've seen it a few times and I can't figure it out!

if you are using a ouija, always have at least 2 people on the board. when you take your hands off do it at the same time. when you ask if anyone is there MAKE SURE you ask for good positive spirits etc.. i asked a local witchcraft store and the woman suggested that you get a Psychic Circle instead because its safer and only brings good postive spirits......i have a "horror story" about the board, so i would recommend the psychic circle instead.... i haven't had any problems with that one (yet).

Good for you, do you want a gold star? :D
I've never heard of a psychic circle - how is it different and what about it lends itself to "good" spirits only?

IMHO if ou are going to use it, use two people, smudge the area, and cast a circle for protection at least.

i don't know why it is supposed to draw good only. the woman never really explained that part. you can find them in book stores in the New Age or whatever they call it now section. if not i know borders has them.

I would think it would have something to do with intent, unless the intent of a psychic circle is to keep negative energy away. BUT it would still all have to do with the intent of the caster....

Umm..i seriously wouldn't treat it as a game. My moms cousin had 12 of her friends over 1 night when they were young. They got out the ouija board and asked it *stupid I know* if any of them were going to die. It said "yes, 13 of you" 12 of the girls died within the next year of very mysterious causes. Moms cousin is the only one still alive. So..i'd be super careful if I were you. How old is your daughter?

my daughter is a twelve year old with the mentality of a college student.Very Intelligent but like her mother is very curious of the supernatural.....When I was a child, I could see spirits, but they only presented themselves to me without communication...At the time it had scared me so I believe thats why these 2 spirits only made themselves appear to me at my most difficult times as a child....But I feel like I still have this "Gift", and am very curious as to----if the board is so dangerous, then why do people use it, theory.....The professionals "today" were beginners at one time.....What makes it safe for them??????????

What makes it dangerous is that messing with other worlds IS dangerous. If you have a malicious spirit hanging around and they feel like messing with you, the ouija board makes it easier. Why? Because by using one you are putting energy into letting them have some physical control - you allow them to take over your hands to guide the planchette. I've never seen things physically being thrown or moved, but I have heard many, many stories. Sufficed to say by using one you give energy to the spirit that they may communicate with you.
Some people are lucky, they can't focus enough energy for the spirit to do anything. Some just don't have spirits around. The former is especially true of people who aren't Pagan or are new to it, because they haven't tuned into their ability to manipulate energy.
Just like some people are good at tarot cards, some people are able to use ouija boards well. Even if you have success don't believe everything you're told, cleanse magically and consecrate if you like, use a protective circle if you like, specify you only want to speak to spirits that are positive, etc. Be *careful*. And don't use it alone!
I wouldn't recommend you let a child use it. Its not a matter of mentality. Its a matter of most kids being more vulnerable to manipulation, nightmares, etc. partially because they are so open. I wouldn't recommend anyone who isn't well versed in shielding and banishing to use it - in fact I don't even use it except under very special circumstances!

Yes, I agree with Myst.
I have a friend who is learning to channel and she does it very well, but she is new to it and is learning from an experienced supervisor. And she never does it when he is not around. I think whenever one is learning to manipulate energy or is contacting spirits, it should be in the presence of one who knows what they are doing so to speak. Certainly because they have learned psychic protection and can guard against maleficent forces out there. Of course this is just my humble opinion, and I'm sure there were many 'great' psychics who had to learn on their own, but I believe having a teacher is the safer and better way to learn.

I've never had a bad experience with a ouija board, even through a summer where my best friend and I were obsessed with it (silly, I know). We didn't know much about it, and it really wasn't wise to be messing with something we had no clue about...or maybe that was the appeal to it? Whatever. In any case, I think I'm probably lucky that I never had a bad experience. The most physical thing I've ever seen happen was all of our candles blowing out (forcefully, and while inside without any sort of wind or anything), after which we stopped using it right away. Whenever we'd use it though, we'd ALWAYS ask what kind of spirit it was. We'd always ask if it was positive or negative, and we only ever had it answer negative three times or so, and each time we said goodbye and got off of it as soon as possible.
I haven't used a ouija board since that summer, really, even though I know more about them.
In any case, I advise that you not use it unless you know what you're getting yourself into... You could get into some pretty nasty stuff....
