View Full Version : Element affinity

Each of us is drawn to a particular element I belive. So what is yours?

Some are people of the Air ,wanting more than anything to fly on the currents. Some are drawn to Fire , never feeling warm enough. Earth draws others with the trees and the smell of the forests forever on their mind. While still others prefer Water , the giver of Life and the promise ofa cooling swim in lake.

So think hard! This little poll may give you an insight to youself that was previously unknown. ;)

Peace,
Twig

Well..that was indeed, hard. Because While I do associate with the trees, and the Earth, and feel close to them, I'm more typically an AIR type person. Always off in my own head, full of ideas, questions, concepts.

To me, Earth type people are far more grounded. Having more to do with the material planes of existence. While Air is the "Concept" stage of developement...Earth is the RESULT of that Concept..to me. They are the living of the concept put forth by Air.

Fire to me, is the thing which CAUSES that thing to manifest. The propeller- Passion.

That's not me. I'm not known to be a really great motivator, or motivated, for that matter.

And Water to me, is how you feel about the things, emotions, feelings, heart. While I'm a very emotional person, I don't allow my emotions to rule my every action. I try to see through my emotions, to find out what is causing them...again..the "Conceptualizer".

So..I'd say I'm a more Air type person....

Is that what you basically were trying to find out?

Myst
January 25th, 2002, 01:22 PM
Well I voted fire. If I remember correctly (thanks to Xander telling me) I believe my chart has 6 earth signs and I have a fire ascendant. I tend to be very earth centered, based on goals that relate to prosperity, family, and very very grounded - ie. give me proof and I'll believe you, let's make a plan and you better not be late. I'm fiery too. Bad tempered, very motivated and ambitious, strong, blunt, sarcastic, a destroyer and creator. It was a hard choice; I could've gone either way.

I'm not trying to find anything out. Just trying to help others find out about themselves. Your response shows it's working. Thanks!

Danustouch I'd say you're very much a water person too. You are emotional and tend to let yourself feel emotions, think about them, and talk about them.

Danustouch
January 25th, 2002, 01:37 PM
Possibly..but the "Thinking" about them part, is very Airy.

Incidentally, your palms also reveal your element affinity...and according to my husband, I have Air/Water hands.

That had me seriously thinking. I voted Fire, but in all honesty its hard for me to pick from them. I am ambitious, hot tempered, and can be blunt when my temper has flared..lol. On an Earth scale, I am very well grounded, I love the forest. I am also very serious most of the time..very very logical thinker. On water..i am an extremely emotional person. I work with it and my emotions do effect what I do. With Air...when I am not serious, I am very intelligent and love coming up with new ideas for things. Sometimes i'll just day dream. I love to write, especially stuff that requires a lot of brain work on my part. So I probably should have voted "I work on multiple planes" eh? :) I am an earth sign, earth rising *i think, scorpio* and water moon sign.

I have a strong affinity to water. It is where I am happiest and calmest- even watching water/ocean during a storm. I tend to be emotional too. And a nurturer. Is it any surprise I am a Cancer? :)

As a second choice I would have to say Earth- The Fire Element scares me off a bit and Air is way too rational for me. I do daily Tarot card readings and most of my cards are of the Pentacle and Cup suits.

Interesting question!

Well I really like smoke (just looking at it, not necessarily smoking something) which I guess is a good blend for my personality. I'm an Aries (fire sign) and I tend to act very much like an Aries. And I'm a rather light (personality wise) happy, and go with the flow which is kinda what I associate with air.

Fire and water, no explanation, it's just what I'm called to and who I am.

Raindancer

I couldn't pick between them. They are all important parts of me. I'm a Fire sign and lots of Air signs, I love a nice warm sunny day, and especially when I was younger, even when it was raining and cloudy, if I was having a great day, the sun would poke through and a beam fall on me. I love the wind blowing through my hair, I love the feel of a good hard wind when I'm walking, or a gentle cooling breeze when its too hot. The wind coming off of the ocean too. But the ocean is mother, I feel peace when I walk on the beach, when I sit with a boulder to my back and listen to the pounding surf. I love the ocean, boating, swimming in it. I also love the forest deeply. I grew up living in a redwood forest, and found who I was walking amongst my tree brothers and sisters. I could find peace there too, calm and I miss the redwoods about as much as I miss my family. I risked injury and possible death to go say goodbye to the redwoodds before I came to New Zealand. I visit the Botanical Gardens here and walk amongst the trees and visit the redwood tree they have planted there. I take my kids and we say hi and hug it. When I create sacred space, and cast a circle, I draw up the energy of the earth through my body. When it rains, especially when it thunders and lightnings, I run out into it and receive a thousand tiny blessings, my feet dance on the earth, the rain anoints my body, the wind caresses me and blows the mundane world away, and my heart glories in the electric fire that races through the sky. It is then that I am truly a son of Lord and Lady, and am truly alive.
Blessings and Light

I am very much an Air/Water combo. I voted air because I think too much. As an element though I am more drawn to Water. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if I shouldn't have chosen Water. Since that is what I am more drawn to. BUT seeing how hard I had to think about it maybe I was right in chosing Air.

 OK Here's my answer:
Astrologically - Air
What I'm Drawn to - Water

definately Fire here...I have always been the type of peron to set things in motion. Allthough I am drawn to Earth also

Does it matter what my element is astrologically? Because in that sense, I am almost completely Air....however, I believe I have a very close affinity to the Earth element. I have no urge to fly really, I would rather be cold than hot, and I am hydrophobic (lol, what a nut I am).
But....green grass on rolling hillsides, tall tall trees with wide trunks...viney jungles and dirt roads....growing plants....I can't stress enough how much I love these things. And, I am truly a tree nut. I would live in a tree....if my parents let me ::sob:: ;)
Anyhow....I wonder if astrology has anything to do with your question? Or if it's just what I feel.
Alas, that's my answer.

My strongest element actually seems to be the spirit realm which has been left off the quiz but it's followed by Water, air and earth with fire bringing a rather sad rear. 8^)

I chose Air and it is related into my chosen name (not crystal night, that's just on-line lol) as well as several aspects of personality. I'm rather flightly, I tend to think more than do though. I find it rather hard to commit to any one thing, I always have a million different things going on at once and even though I get confused sometimes and wish my life was more simple, I know that I wouldn't be happy that way.

I always thought of myself as a Water-baby/moon girl (typical Cancer, I'm told). Recently, my high priest said he thought of me more as Air.

After a brief discussion, we decided I was both -

which led to the comment that this made me a carbonated beverage -

which led to the short form of "Sprite" -

which my boyfriend had been calling me for some time before this conversation took place -

which just goes to show that even non-Wiccans have access to the mysteries sometimes ;).

according to my astrology I am a spirit element, not to be difficult from the choices given I would have to say I am a water or earth thing, not because of my great stability mind you (haha) but rather because I am an earthy person, my ties are to earth and She is my religious and spiritual focus, water because I am emotional, more so than most ppl.

I'm a water/air person. Water because I love the water I would live in it if I could, plus I am a cancer. Air because I think way to much. I always have several different thought in my head at any given time.

Well... as a libra, I'm always busy trying to balance all of these out and figure out which I'm most drawn and connected to....From the time I was tiny I was drawn and attracted to water and to fire. Any type of water calls to me, calms me, and soothes my spirit. I love fire, have always been fascinated with it...and can feel the flames and the heat deep within me...but then maybe that's because I'm always soooo cold and I have the intense need for the heat it brings!! My thought processes are like the air and I'm always trying to contain them. And, I am also drawn to the earth and the desire to be closer to it.... Sooooo I'm still wondering where that leaves me??

hmmmmm....

let's see... I can be as soft as summer's rain and as violent as a hurricane. My life and emotions tend to move regular cycles, I'm flexible yet strong. I'm attracted to the one element I'm least like and/or compatible with, fire. I have a buoyant personality and even though I can act like a babbling brook I'm often quiet. I'm not a very active person but then still waters run deep.....:D

In that, I would say I'm equally all three. :)

I voted Water. I am very much a water person. My sun sign is Cancer, and my ascendant is Scorpio. Plus, my moon is in Taurus, which is Earth but also compatible with Cancer. I've got Mercury in Cancer and Saturn in Libra.

I've got a lot of fire in my chart though (Venus in Leo, and the rest in Sag) so I tend to be very passionate and philosophical. Leo is a self-centered sign though, and having Venus in Leo is somewhat trying. I have to remind myself not to be a selfish lover, but really I want to be treated like a princess at times.

I'm an extremely emotional and psychic person. I have the craziest and most amazing dreams, and I usually have no idea where they come from. If you're interested in reading about them, I've written down many of them and posted them on my website: http://www.lindsay.dreamvirus.com/writings/dreams.html

Several of my dreams have come true, but I think those stories are for another time.

I voted for air as it would be what you see on the surface of me. Air is my external side, what the world sees of me mostly. I like to make communication as clear as possible. I'm pretty logical and talk after I think so as to make my self as clear as possible.

Internally I'm an ares which is a fire sign. I don't show this part of me to many, but I can be blunt and sarcastic. I can use words to shake people up and my wrath is a terrible thing to behold. I also see fire as light, life and hope. I use a combination of sun and fire to empower these things in me.

When I can feel the sun and the wind, I feel most empowered and centered. Air is the element that I use to connect with the world. I connect to the natural world via the weather and to others via my intelligence. When I can feel both the wind and the sunlight, I can easily get into a meditative state.

Air. The cold, crisp air of an all too brief Autumn is the greatest motivator, energizer, and all around way to make me stop and appreciate the fleeting greatness of Nature. I like heights and would like to hang-glide someday. Flight(of a non-mechanical kind) is a fantasy I have always had.

I have a deep affinity for the Ocean. It's the first place I ever felt in contact with The Goddess. I love baths, rain, and storms...I love the power of the sea..the strength of a tsunami compared to a droplet of water. Water can also mold into any space...and I feel I am very flexible and accepting, myself. Wonderful question.

Iris
February 25th, 2003, 12:01 PM
This is kinda hard, because I guess I'm typically a water-type person - very emotional and sensitive, plus I'm a Pisces...but I really don't feel drawn to water at all. In fact, I'm scared of it! I can never walk on the beach on a stormy day because the waves intimidate me, and I would never want to live near water. I guess I kinda - don't trust it, if that makes any sense. It's so violent at times, and if I lived near a lake or river I'd always be worried about a flood.

So...I think there are two ways to answer this question. One would be the element that mirrors our personalities, the other would be the element we feel most comfortable with. I feel very comfortable with earth, I guess. It's just a very calm, reassuring element (I mean, most of the time...I am aware that earthquakes happen!) it's kinda passive and almost...secretive, in a way. Does this make any sense? That's what the element earth means to me anyway. I seem to feel more comfortable the closer I am to the ground! Earth is also a very...honest sort of element. Honest and blunt, almost.

Did that make me sound like I'm on drugs?! *worried face*

My first inclination was to yell WATER...because I am drawn to it like a magnet (and I think that I drowned in a past life and a few other 'incidents' with the water)...but then I realized that I always have this uncontrollable urge to fly in dreams...maybe that's just an urge to be out of body...I don't know??? I've also drawn energy from fire (of course that was in conjunction with water from the lake)...so I just chose multiple....

Greetings,

My element is water, and has been, as long as I can remember naming it.

Emotionally, I very much act like the flood: when presented a problem, I tend to look at it from every perspective, downright analytical and objective. I want to know everything, from the big picture to the tiniest detail.

Very cautiously, I gather up all I know and let it brood for a while.

And then I wake up in the middle of the night and write down the solution. Or I'd go into the first shop and buy the useless gizmo. Or I'd pick up the girl and have a blast. Or I'd pick up the computer and throw it out of the window.

(Never really did throw it out, but a couple of mice and some keyboards died too soon.)

So I voted "Water".

However, I have been taught to work with all elements, and in difficult situations am able to switch between them as needed. We call that ability "emptiness". My usage of elemental system isn't Greek, it's Japanese.

boy this was hard.
not only am i drawn to them all in different ways, even my astrolgoical chart is divided!

my sun sign is an earth, my moon sign is an air, and my ascendant is a water!

i chose water.

i am really very much an earth type; very connected and in love with trees, animals, plants, foods of the earth, walking barefoot.
i love the smells of the earth, and hills hills hills!

i also love the air! i love clouds and bluesky, and overcast sky, and the sun...boy this was hard!

and fire! it's true, i don't ever seem warm enough!
and i can just fall into fire (not literally) i have seen all kinds of things in the fire...mesopatamic images, people, scenes...

but i had to pick water.
i am always thirsty.
i am incredibly emotional.
i am very intuitive and psychic.
i am very nurturing and physical.
i love rain, the ocean, the sea...
i love baths, and showers, (frequently 2 a day!)
i guess i am pretty much all of them combined, with just a little more on the water side.

Hiya Twig................I'm Fire, always have been. I was a volunteer firefighter for years. I got razzed for years after one house fire drill because I got so entranced by the fire running over the walls that I fogot to turn the nozzle on..........<g>

For me Fire isn't so much just a source of heat, but life itself.

I tend towards Air, being imaginative and creative, always off in a daydream or flying on a hope and a dream. But i have an extremely feminine Water quality, with the way i handle my emotions, my freedom to express tears and pain, and my fluid dance between them. I am resilient, strong of body and always most comfortable surrounded by trees, caring and loving, Earth taking hold. And Fire finds itself in my heart, the core of my passions, my crafting, my art. I can be stubborn and unrelenting, and fiercely protective of those i love.

I am uncertain what that puts me closest to.

My astrological chart is made up of mostly air signs which is really fitting to me. I love the wind, the way air smells, clear blue sky's that's my fav. I also love dusk and dawn, the way the sky looks and how the atmosphere is at those times.

My next element would be fire. I'm afraid of fire but I am always drawn to flames. I love the way they dance and flicker. They entrance me. I also love summer and warmth. I can never be too warm.

Next is water. I love the way water sounds. I always feel at home near water. I don't really spend alot of time in or around water but I need to live by a lake, river, or ocean.

Last is Earth. Maybe it is because I'm so drawn to air that I never take much time to sit and listen to the trees. But I do love trees and I've always felt at home in a forest. Sometimes I feel that's where I really belong.

Personally, I feel an affinity with all the classic elements, as I like being outdoors. Hopefully what's below will explain more. :)

Earth: I love walking barefooted on grass, embracing (ok, ok, hugging! :P) trees, running my hands through earth and sand. I love the smell of grass, trees and flowers.

Water: I love the taste and feeling of water, sometimes I could stay in the shower all day! Outdoors, I love walking in streams, or bathing my hands in them, or just walking in the rain. I don't get to swim much because of my bad back, but I do remember liking being in and supported by water very well.

Fire: Fascinating stuff, the richness and colour of the flames, embers, the smell of the smoke (woodsmoke is best I find).

Air: Well, this is more of a mental thing. My head sometimes literally busts with ideas that I find hard to pin down. Physically, I adore the feeling of wind.

I don't think these accurately show any affinity to anyone else but me, but I'd thought I'd share regardless. Astrologically I'm an Earth sign, and according to Shiatsu I'm attuned/have an affinity to fire (though I'd have to check properly, fire was the main one). I guess looking back at what I just wrote, earth and water seem to be more highly favoured than fire and air.

I think I am drawn to water. I grew up on the west coast and never minded the precipitation. Now that I am in Colorado, I miss it a lot. It is incredible when it does rain here. You can smell it. Everyone will walk outside and sniff. Looks pretty funny to tourists driving by.

Definitely air.

I'm extremely intellectual/geeky
Logic dictates most of my actions (followed closely by instinct)
I cannot stand to be confined or told not what to do (I have to be free!)
I detest feeling my bare feet against any sort of ground (inside and out)
I adore heights, breezes, etc.
Mental abilities have always come more easily to me than most (telepathy, empathy, etc.)
I am very sensitive to temperature changes (but detest heat)
I love all creatures that are graceful (spiders for instance) and that are capable of flight
Every magickal working I've written related to air (wind magick, weather magick, telepathy, invisibility) has worked, strangely enough since I'm uncomfortable with such constants.
I always have a nasty habit of looking my nose down on people who I feel are... well, less than gifted intellectually. I try to catch myself when I do it though.
I can change moods faster than the wind changes direction, and if you blink, you may miss it.
Extremely rigid or aggressive people tend to irritate me (it's the whole I want to be free, not dominated or come up against a wall thing.)
I'm extremely limber and flexible

I'll stop there.

well, I had always thought that I was more of an Earth person, seeing as how my sign is an earth sign. According to an angel board me, my sister, and her husband used to "play", I was told I was more of a water sign. The reasoning: let's see if I can remember about what it had said... That I like the more simple life. I guess along the lines of "going with the flow". I am not too sure if I believed in the angel board... but I am pretty sure it was legitimate.

I chose Air because it came first to mind, with thoughts of my Sacred Place, an open field on top of a hill (near where I lived for 20 years and raised my children, and coincidentally the highest point in the county), where I go at night to stand under the great dome of the sky and drink in deeply of the stars... I can see/feel a three-dimensionsl lattice of energy connecting them that everything is a part of and I know I'm not as articulate as so many others posting but it is truly comforting and reassuring and nourishing.

So I chose Air.

When i was a child i was of the AIR.
In my youth i was of FLAME.
As i matured i was of WATER.
As ONE guided me and instructed me i came to EARTH.
My BLOOD brought me to the OAK.
I Plucked an ACORN and hung it around my neck.
I was a Druid

That was quite hard for me. I think I feel very tied to ALL of the elements...but in the end I voted for Air. My thoughts are always taking me to different places and I'm constantly daydreaming and have a strong wish to travel. I'm a Leo, and while I do tend to always feel cold...especially living in the Northeastern United States...I think that while my sign is of fire I'm still more drawn to air. As for water..I tend to have strong emotions and express them dramatically, which I think is relative to both fire and water elements as I've always thought of fire as being the very passionate element. Perhaps thats were my creative side comes from. Out of all the elements I think I am least tied to the Earth. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to walk in the woods and forests and have always liked rural areas but I don't really think I'm all that grounded..and I definatly don't like to stay in one place. I hope that made even the slightest bit of sense...well thats just my two bits.

I was answering this thread just a moment ago when I got cut off by some unknown force :damnpc: I think my computer still has some kind of ghost in it :fpcsucks: I'm still trying to hammer things out.

Any way, lets start all over again:
Personally, I've always been drawn to EARTH elements . From my childhood I have been making gardens of all sorts, buildding stone walls and patios and I was generally happiest when I was in up to my knees in mud. I have an afinity for plants of all sorts and I love rocks. I have always enjoyed exploring caves, hiking in the woods and rock climbing.
I once had a job in an office. I was supposed to be a computer programmer but let me tell you that job didn't last long. I blew my cap about the third week in :scream:
So now I'm retired and living in the mountains and I've got nothing to do but enjoy life.

I have always connected with Air. As a child I would play with the clouds by moving them here and there. I was just a kid and was having fun, but one day I realized that I was actually controlling the weather. Whenever I went outside during the rain, the rain would slow and fall more gently as I was in it. Then it would downpour a moment after I got out of it. I love the rain, the weather, which all comes from air. I have the most control over air. But it doesnt feel like control. I feel like I am part of the air, in fact I would say that I am. It is not so much control as it is, just being a part of it, and that is why I can make the wind change directions, cause a gentle breeze, create a fast wind, etc. It is like it is my own self doing it, even though I am not actually moving physically, my soul is.

Again though, I must say that I love all the other elements, I feel connected with them all. But air seems to be my strong point ^_^.

This was a good question...the answer which came to mind for me was water because that is my sun sign's affiliation firstly, and secondly because I have always been drawn to it... I live in the Great Lakes region, am making my first trip to see the Pacific Ocean in April (where I plan on lounging on the beach and in the water for my entire 9 day stay). I remembered making an Ocean shrine as a child while thinking about this post which was comprised of shells, sand, actual water from the ocean, seaweed, pictures and stones. And come to think of it, my best friend is also a cardinal water sign. Those around me also notice that I drink an obsene amount of water in a day, leading me to conclude that I am a fish (a mermaid ideally but more likely a fish).

I'm a Pisces and very emotional and intuitive....but I really had to go with Earth on this one. I love to retreat into my cave, love being in dimmed lighting (if not the dark) like a cave, and when I think of the perfect place, it's a hobbit hole, a house ensconced inside the Earth. Thick, primevil forests are my idea of heaven; driving through the Smoky Mountains was a spiritual experience for me, even just to see them.

While I try to maintain a working balance of elements in my life, I must admit that I'm drawn to the element of Earth. The sounds of a forest, the taste of honeysuckle, the sight of a colorful burst of flowers and the feel of soft clover beneath my feet all touch a place within me like nothing else. Besides, there no scent in the world like the earth just after a warm spring rain. :)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a dual elemental problem. I am equally fire and water. I love fire, I'm at peace around it, and I'm passionate, and often very times out of control of the emotions that my water side brings about. As far as water goes, I'm intuitive, I adore the sea (I love to scuba dive.) I have an equal attraction to the phoenix as I do the snake, one a fire and the other I water (I believe the snake is a water, I may be wrong.) I also adore thunderstorms, I love them beyond words. It's a fun thing, having two polar opposites.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is this a normal thing, or do I have something wrong with me? lol.

Does it matter the I'm a tempered red head????????????

My astrology chart shows I'm high in earth the most which would explain me loving gardening, camping, hiking, walks in the park, biking, and my favorite is just laying in the sun on a breezy day with a sweater on because of the cool chilling wind but the warm sun on my face making me sleepy. Actually in astrology the sun is listed with all the planets and in my birth month I have three planets one includes the sun. Because the leo planet in astrology is the sun. in Astrology the middle of the chart we are on earth. Everyone has earth as the place where we are not a planet in our charts or for the planets or houses..:fofftopic sorry

That's interesting---is the moon a planet too?

In astrology, yes.

Astrology originally distinguished two classes of object - the fixed stars which were, well, fixed relative to one another and drifted ever so sowly, as a set,due to precession of the equinoxes; and the wandering goats which had irregular motion all over the place and were called, in Greek, planets.

Astronomy further restricted the term planet and introduced moon, planetoid, comet, and all sorts of other terms. Astronomy stilldebates which bodies fallinto which category, such as Pluto, Chiron, and our 'double planet' Earth-Moon.

Astrologers use the older meaning, partly because its a handy classification of all the stuff we are interested in and partly because it annoys astronomers while being factually accurate :hehehehe:

For me, water is the mother of my spirit, while air is the lover. I do not find air to be a flighty element, rather that it is the passionate element of wind which can caress or destroy. Wind and water together are my affinity, and nothing has more power for good or for ill.
Air as representative of creative thinking and astral travel applies too.
As for the water affinity,as an empath in control of my empathic ability, I know many things through emotion without allowing emotion to outweigh my well grounded and earthy reason.
To me fire is an element to be controlled as it can be so quickly changeable and if out of control, it will not be enjoyed but will turn one's life to ashes. I love to watch it, but watch it I do! Fortunately water is not particularly fearful of fire, and I prefer the more sensual passion of wind.
Do you consider the element of light to be of fire because it comes from sun? I have a strong affinity there and work a lot with light.

Fire and Water I think. I'm passionate, throw myself into things whole heartedly, emotional, intense, and well...firey. Somethings set me off quickly, somethings don't. Like water, I *will* go my own way eventually. Meaning, you can set a course for me, and I'll follow, but I'll slowly wear the banks down until I'm ultimately going where I want to be. Or I'll just rage and break barriers with one wave. Both fire and water can be used to comfort and restore, and I'm liek that. But they are also some of the most destructive, and sometimes (in the case of fire) self-destructive. I'll lash out only to be regretful and apologetic and calm after. Kinda like a river when it flash floods and liek a wild fire, but then the river calms and the fire eventually burns out.

Hrm...I hope that got worded right...mostly I'm steam because they two mesh. Water surface (and beneath) is calm and the fire's crackling merrily in the hearth. :)

My Elemental Affinities lie within Fire, Wind and Water. The paradox is that fire is at the same time a positive and negative force for me. I have an ever consuming desire for knowledge, but it often damages me as I sometimes attempt to learn things I do not yet have the capacity to comprehend. Combined with my fickle bound sense interest represented by my affinity to air, makes it hard to stay with one point of interest. To further contrast the before, I can be extremely adaptable, molding myself to suit my circumstances. My water affinity.

I conflict with Earth too much to have any real affinity with it.

I guess you could say my strongest affinity would be with air.

Well, I was one of the folks selecting the 6th option. I have never studied the classic elemental structure and its personality associations. Reading through the other posts though, it appears as though Earth aligns with my general feelings.

On my druidic altar I have representations of the sacred well, fire, and tree along with features for the 3 domains of land, sea, and sky. So, I am either an overachiever or thoroughly confused.

LOL Doesn't have to!

It really depends on what kind of druidism a person practices, I've found. IMO, the 'classic' type of druidry does have the the three Worlds of Earth, Sea, and Sky. I haven't found any element correspondances or ritual circles, etc in the really recon type rituals either--or in any historical sources I use. For ME, my own altar has representations of the three and lighting a fire sets up my sacred/ritual space. The further away from the recon type one goes the more of these other elements one finds. I believe it was KellyP who mentioned that there are some druid organizations who consider druidry more of a philosophical viewpoint than a culturally specific religion, probably find quite a few different ingredients mixed in whichever definition of 'druid' a person uses these days.

I dont know if I should ask this or not,but here it goes.....I thought the Celts only believed in three elements=Earth,Air and Water(sea)?Okay, here's a quick rendition of what we know of Indo-European Cosmology and how it got turned into the "elements:"

* Three Worlds: Land, Waters (sea, lake, river), Sky
* Three Realms: Underworld/Cythonic, Midworld, Celestial
* Three Gates: the Sacred Fire, the Sacred Well, the Sacred Tree/Mountain
* Two States of Being: In this world/mortal/alive and In the Otherworld/spirit/dead
* Two Qualities of Being: Light/safe and Dark/dangerous

Think of these as intersecting coordinate axes marking five dimensions.

The Druids, being Indo-European intellectuals, taught this cosmology until they were conquered by the Christians.

Empedocles, a Greek philosopher, created a system of "four elements" consisting of Earth, Water, Air, plus Fire. This was so he could have two axes of hot-cold and wet-dry. Christianity adopted his system and taught it in their schools, because it made Nature "dead" and non-sacred. Ceremonial magicians in the Renaissance, having forgotten that Fire originally represented spirit to the IE peoples, added a fifth "element" of Spirit--hence the pentagram.

Zoroaster turned the Light-Dark duality into a Good-Evil dualism. This affected the Greek Neo-Platonists, the Gnostics, and then the Christians and Muslims, giving us the Black-or-white thinking underlying most of modern Western culture.

(I have an essay about this at my website.)

Whew! I'll take my professor hat off now. _wiz_

my deeper studies into the elementals well. expound on that but.. not boring yall with those details.

there is a third quality of being.. neutrality. the grey. the shadow
as well as a third state of being. yes there is mortal physical life and then there is the spiritual ethereal life and then there is the state of being that reaches a higher plane to that of celestial content. perhaps even almost diefied.

Earth and water for me mix well in love and matters of the heart.

Air for communication and sometimes fire as well if I have that type of passion. :)

I'm a Druid born into a Iar clan, have an Airt-born mother, have a natural elemental affinity to the Tuath, and married a Deas-born Druid. My children are Tuath and Deas affinity, and hold Deas as thier clan element. So I've got a lot in me, but my family still says I've got the oceans in my veins. I take great pride in having mixed blood, as it enambles me to work on numerous levels and connect with others well.

(Edit: some people have asked. I am not the main user for this screen name, my daughter is. Sorry for the confusion!)

I wish I could have been born into a Druid clan. I am of the element water but I also feel close to air.

Can I teach myself about the element of water without someone who knows? I've read alot of books but the learning only goes so far.

How can I find a water element teacher?

Well, I've always been very much a water person, in personality and affinity. It seems like my life has nearly been defined by water. I live next to the mighty Mississippi, and one of my favorite things to do as a child/teen was to climb on the rocks or sit on the bluffs and watch the river roll by. I have been having increasing affinity for earth as well as I mature (my childhood was defined by very strong, hard to control emotions, so some grounding is good).

I have always been an Air indivdual. For one that is my birth element. But for the past 2 years I have also had a connection with Earth.

I am very much connected to fire, by birth, and by spirit.
I can look into a fire and see things no one else understands, it is the fastest way to put myself in a meditative state, and when I need to concentrate on one thing to keep my mind clear, it is always a flame.
BTW Twig, what you said is true also, I'm not always cold, but fire never gets too hot for me :)

I'm pretty much an air-type person so I think the one element that I feel most close to is air.

I'm drawn to both fire and air. I like seeing fire--it's hypnotic, especially candle flames. Plus, my hands get cold within minutes of being in cold/rainy weather. In fact, I wear a sweater even on warm days (and there's a lot of warm days in California) because I dislike even the slightest chill.

Air is also one of my favorite elements. Every time the wind blows, it feels like it's sweeping everything away and helping me breathe more easily, and I like hearing wind rushing past. Perhaps that's why I like birds, since they can use air currents to get where they're going.

In addition to those two elements, being a Pisces makes me quite partial to water. Whenever I think of a natural landscape, it always has water (IE waterfalls, rivers, lakes). It's rather calming to watch flowing water.

I would have to say Water. I am a Cancer and I fit my profile to an almost eerie degree. I am most definitely guided by emotion and instinct... its what I base most of my decisions on. I am also highly drawn to bodies of water. My favorite places have always been near someplace aquatic. Even my clothing is bought in shades that would remind one of the ocean... it calms me.

Overall, since I am so ruled by my emotions, I'd have to say I am definately most tied to the element of water. Emotions and intuition are the two things that guide and push me through life. And even though I'm both scared of and love water, I am very much a water person.

I feel that one can not be a student of the elements without working with with them all. In doing so one can feel more complete and whole. The four elements are all around us and should be respected at all times especially when called upon for protection.

I can't say that I move towards any of them in perticular, I have found that I am drawn to each at different times. I feel that the reason for this is because I am drawn to each element when I am in most need of what that element has for me.

This is quite hard for me twig. But being today is the first do of a journey into myself your poll fits right in. So, I'll tell you what I can.........

I have always been one drawn to all of them. It that rare? Even in my youth I loved watching the clouds and birds wondering what it would be like to be flying passing over all looking down from a sky view. And I always have colds hands and feet. I can never get warm. You'll find me in summer time wearing a sweater when it's 80 out. And how I love listening to the water in the streams near our home growing up we would have winter picnic me and my best friend. Walking down to the stream filled with beautiful shapes of ice and hearing the water roar with warm soup in hand and a sandwhich I still love listening to water as well. And how I love laying on the earth feeling the warm sun upon me and sitting under trees.

I can't ,I just don't know of one they all seem to call to me. For as long as a can remember. You would think one would stand out in my mind over the others but they all seem so extremely equal I always felt my best with them all. Sort of balanced and grounded around them even as a child. It was in a building with people I felt out of place shy, hiding away from other. I don't do that now but people laugh at me when I say I hate people just people in general.

So, what can you tell me, twig?

I'm definitely drawn to water more than any other, though earth and air are also very close to me.

I'm not quite sure.

I have always thought I was air, because I am very cerebral and think my way through things. I have always loved to stand in the wind and the breeze and feel it flow around me.

However most of my birth signs are in earth, and I have a natural green thumb. Seems like every plant I touch prospers. However I really despise gardening and growing things cause I grew up having to do it for my parents.
Probably would have been more interesting to grow things for myself.

I feel a facination with fire, you can say that I'm a pyro deep down inside. I do also have an inate fear of fire and tend to react to fires larger than a campfire with immediate action of trying to extinguish them.

Water is the element I feel least in touch with. I can't really swim and while I wash every day and drink it, I don't understand it. Water is sometimes thought of as the element for healing. However I feel my healing is more aligned with earth and regeneration than the soothing water.

Personally, I am the King of Cups; the airy part of water. I love storms, and snow, and can't not think (except for the week after finals), and while I am often emotional, I am almost always in control of my emotions, rather than they in control of me.

But I've always felt a strong love and fascination for fire. The highlight for me when going camping was always the chance to play with the campfire, not the natural scenery by any means. So I used to think of myself as having an affinity for fire... tarot has since taught me otherwise, that I am, at the most basic level, definitely water, and the air and fire are just expressions of detail thereof.

I am a Scorpio Sun, Scorpio Moon, Scorpio Rising, Scorpio Venus, ...a lot of water needless to say!

I am an elemental water witch. I'm a marine artist and I charm my paintings with water healing energy so that whosoever buys them will reap the rewards of this energy.

I adore water in all forms and am especially drawn to the color aquamarine.

I know I need to love the other elements to balance myself but I know I'll never love another like I do water!!!!!

I work on mulitply planes because, my spirit guides work on mulitply planes. But, I do have an affinity with one element more than the other at certain times, which element it is-it will vary. Sometime earth is more with me, sometimes, fire, air, water.. But, I will always try to maintain a balance of the elements. If I find one element has been lacking for some time in my life I will work with that element until balance is restored. In order of connection:
1) Earth (calls me, so intrigued by a forest or mountains- love getting lost in a forest)
2) Fire (Sun Sign cusp born) -always around me
3) Water (cusp born changed to Fire) -always around me
4)Air ( but tied with fire and water. Have been surrounded by air signs all my life!)

Air. Air's connected to my zodiac sign (Libra) and it's definitely there. I think about stuff a lot, some times too much. I love the other elements, but with my personality I have the most affinity with air.

May I just mention how much this poll annoys me?

The 4 Element world-view is Greco-Roman, and this is the Druids, Celts, and Celtic Christians Path. The various Celtic cultures including their scholarly and priesthood class, the Druids, used a 3 Realms world-view. Land, Sea, and Sky doesn't fit into a 4 Elements template.

It's a completely different construct!

Couldn't this thread be moved to some more appropriate place?

Maybe Wicca, which does use a 4 Elements template.

I picked Water. I actually don't get the chance, often, to call West, since others claim it first, but it's probably the most similar to my nature. I usually end up calling Fire. Sometimes Air and sometimes Earth, but usually Water. Then again, I have a Moon and Sun in Water signs... I'm afraid I'm not the most creative when coming up with Earth. I mean I'll say something about stability and support, but Earth is much harder to come up with something, verbally, than something like, well, any of the other elements. ^_^

This was a tough call. I picked earth for this point of my life, because I am very concerned with human nature, and its tendency to become ungrounded.

I've been recently focused on Air, and moving towards water. It's a journey of moving from the conceptual and rational to emotional realm. Earth though, keeps me grounded and saves from floating too far off course. I'm progressively working towards fire, which requires the other three elements to master, if that makes any sense?

I have two elements that I resonate with. I was born in a town that bordered the Gulf of Mexico, and grew up respecting and spending alot of time in the water. I love to swim and just be in or near the water.
Then I moved up here, to Ohio, where there aren't any big oceans near me. It seems that my affinity then went to Earth. According to others, I've grown up to be a very grounded individual, but I still have some of my watery tendencies. I drive people insane when we go hiking and I take off my shoes and just start walking barefoot down a creek.

Argon. :p

Seriously, though: I'd say water. I have an affinity for all things involving the sea and rivers, and I love to swim. I've grown up by a river, and I have an extreme interest in marine biology. And, I feel a particular connection to gods of the sea and rivers in various world mythologies.
