I'm posting this one a bit early... don't despair if you're running behind. There is no rush.
If you ever want to take an image like the one below and make it into a banner, image splicing is one way to do it.
Here is one way to go about it. For this example I am going to use the art of Darien Gerke (http://www.darienart.com/). We’ll start with the image below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice1.jpg
Change the Image size by going to Image, Image size. Make sure that the “constrain proportions” is checked. Change only the image height under “pixel dimensions”. Change it to 105 pixels.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice2.jpg
Then...
- Select, All
- Edit, Copy
- File, New – Choose the 300x105px banner preset (CS2) or manually enter the figures. (PS7)
- Edit, Paste – into the 300x105px work space.
- Using the move tool, move the image to the corner of the banner.
Note: I zoomed in to display the next examples more clearly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice3.jpg
Then, using the Rectangular Marquee tool, Select an area for splicing. (You may nudge the selected area with the arrow keys if necessary.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice4.jpg
- Then go to Edit, Copy and then Edit, Paste.
- Using the move tool, move the piece you just pasted next to the image like a puzzle piece. You can also use the arrow keys for this.
- To make the piece you just pasted 'blend in' with the image, go to Edit, Transform, Flip Horizontal.
- Then paste the next piece by simply going to Edit, Paste.
- Move this piece next to the previous.
- Continue the above steps until the whole banner is covered.
- Just remember to use the ‘Flip Horizontal’ on every other piece so that the image blends.
Reference the examples below:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice6.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v616/skysilver/Splice7.jpg
Note: To combine the pieces into one layer, go to Layer, Flatten Image.
Assignment: Using one of the attached images or one of your own, create a banner using the splicing method.

Here is my effort.....
That pic is kinda tough to splice, so not bad! :) It would have come out better if you had reversed every other piece... it would have flowed together. Something to try if you want...

yes, i found that out...the hard way. But I really liked the pic. So I had to do that one!
---edit - that was wierd I posted mine before you edited yours and mine came back with your edited post......odd. But, cool. I think I am going to play with it a little bit more maybe...I have some ideas to try with some other things ....can we post our other attempts here too? Maybe a seperate thread for peer critque?

Argh I spent way to long on this and could have still kept working on it but here is what I did. First one just shows the direction I took and the second one is the finished product event hough I could have gone back and fixed the spacing with several of them...
ETA: forgot due to my marquee tool acting weird and rounding the ends, the copied selection of the picture was to small to match the size of the banner so I used the smudge tool to fill in the areas.

I haven't a clue how you all managed to complete this lesson. I must have spent 15 minutes on this and I managed to get maybe 1/8 of an inch of filler into my background. Is there an easier way or do you all just have a lot more patience than I do?

I haven't a clue how you all managed to complete this lesson Well in my case it took about 2-3 hours and constant having to start over and over again tillI said to heck with it and finished what you see up there :)

It can get quite a bit tedious depending on the picture you're using. If you don't want to spend a whole lot of time on it, try finding a pic that has more "meat" to splice from. The wolf picture should be pretty easy to do.

Yes, a couple of hours to complete just about everyone I have done so far.

Thanks, I'll try the wolf.

After doing it a few times you do get used to it... you will get faster at it. This is where the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V come in handy. ;)
amakaliani
May 12th, 2006, 10:19 PM
Tell me about it.
ctrl-a = select all
ctrl-s = save
ctrl-o = open
ctrl-n = new
(some of the ones I found useful)l

Ctrl-C is a short cut for "copy"
Ctrl-V is a short cut for "paste"

Here are my efforts. The third one is awkward as there isn't much to work with when splicing so I tried another version by smudging the diagonal highlights into a dark background layer.

I am still having a lot of trouble with this. My marquee tool seems permanently stuck in the same dimensions as the banner box itself. Anyone know how to make it behave?

Using the intrsuctions i set up the picture for a splice.
I found that the spliced sections had adirty gray colourthat i didnt like, so using the smudge tool, i managed to blend it to become completely black.
Using the text tool, i selected my text, and then used outer glow to make it show up a bit better.
