What do you think makes you pick the cards you pick when you're doing a tarot card reading? does your spirit guide guide your hand? does deity guide you? or does your higher self tell you which card to pick?

do you always do things because you've been caused to do them? Do things always happen because of a cause that happened previously. What if there is another process other than causality? That way spirit guides don't guide your hand necessarily, but maybe you pick the cards you pick because it fits with what's typical at that very moment.

I guess it depend on who you ask. As for myself, I don't pick them. The deck is shuffled and cut 3 times, then the cards are delt ( I turn mine over sideways as to not change the outcome) and are placed into the spead of my choice.
I am sure others may do it differntly depending on how they were taught.

Sheer random chance? I don't really worry about why the cards that are dealt are dealt. If it's chance, nothing more, that's okay - as long as I can still glean information about myself and my current situation from it. If it's diety, or some higher consciousness, or higher self... well, I won't argue (it could very well be), but I don't necessarily believe it. The value of tarot isn't so much as what's causing the cards to come up, but in your own skill at interpreting them to fit your life with some sort of meaning.
At least, that's what I believe. You could very well have different views on it, and as long as we all get something valuable out of it, I'm happy. :)

I'd say serendipity.
Chance that isn't as random as it appears. I don't worry about why the cards come up the way they do. It works. That's what matters.
That said, I've heard theories:
1. the Higher Self knows which cards carry the message that you need to hear, and chooses them.
2. you know on a subconscious level which cards you need.
3. something guides you.

*nods* I guess the answer is going to be different depending on your spiritual beliefs on causation (as said above). Personally, I think about it as tapping into the energy of the world for that moment and, from that, the wisdom of the ages helping us keep our finger on the pulse of time through card interpretation (which is sort of a divination technique when you get down to it - the same card doesn't always mean exactly the same thing).

I lay down my cards blind (facedown), so I can't really tell why I pick them. They do have an uncanny accuracy when I manage to make the right connections, though. I personally think the cards themselves make me pick them.
And I have a rather foreboding feeling about saying this... to other people... especially since the concept's from a widely-known kiddy anime, but I believe in the cards. They know themselves a lot better than I know them right now, so obviously they'd know which cards would be the best guidance for whatever I'm asking.
...I'm just going to my little corner filled with Angel Sanctuary pictures to pretend I didn't quote Yu-Gi-Oh.

I believe that when we set out to read Tarot we are putting ourselves in a mindset that allows us to tap into Life energy...energy that is always around us. We are for that moment connected. I don't believe that you even need the Tarot to do this but it helps to focus our intent.
Just my two cents:)

If this helps at all...I get a feeling in the pit of my stomach about which cards I should pick, and in what order. I fan the cards out after shuffling and pick *seemingly* at random...but it's really not random at all. I get a sort of *buzz* inside when I pick the right card. Do I sound like a lunatic?

That is how I read them to but if Im reading for someone else I allow them to hand them to me in the direction they "feel like" and I read them that way

Who choses the cards , The universe ,or spirit or me or all of the above ? l've been reading for 16 years and whilst l know the literal meanings of the cards , when l'm reading for others l am " guided " by spirit as to the relevance of the cards that come up in a reading . l find it really hard to read for myself because my literal self over-rides the messages , but l find it easier to read for others , and l'm a lot more accurate . For years l stuck to a formulaic spread , but now l go with the "flow" and have adapted my own lay outs using the major arcana cards only l mostly do past life readings tied to a present life reading as l believe our past can explain current patterns of behaviour and how to change/reconsile them. l'm enjoying reading others opinions on tarot and how they use it , so keep 'em comin' !!

I don't know who/what picks the cards. When I was doing readings for myself, I thought that my Higher Self, or Godself picked the cards to tell me something my conscious mind was shutting out. Now that I've done some readings for others, and they say the readings have been accurate, I don't know, is it still my Higher Self? Is it the Universe? The Collective Unconscious? I don't know, I only know it works.
