Are Odin and Wotan the same God, or are they different? I'm getting slightly confused over this..._inabox_

Well, yes... and no... maybe about the same as Zeus and Jupiter... it's sorta all in the linguistics...

Yes....adn no. Yes they are the same god, but they are from different time periods and locations. How the respective peoples saw there version of the god is different. Wotan doesn't have the war god feeling that Odin does, for example.

My heathen (specifically Anglo-Saxon heathenry) godfather explained it to me like this. Yes, they're about the same, but he has an entirely different relationship with different cultures/times/places, and the different names signify this.
It's like how you are a different person to your significant other than to your mother. You have similar qualities, but in other ways, you are an entirely different person. You show different sides to your mother than your SO. Some qualities overlap, but others do not.
In the same way, Wotan (Woden) and Odin are the same in essence, but practically, he's different depending upon whom/what/when/where he's dealing with.

In my opinion,Zeus and Jupiter are not the same deity.Zeus is Greek while Jupiter is Roman. And although the Romans adopted the Greek gods while creating a slightly different pantheon,i still believe that they are different.
