I dont have any favorites as you would use the word. I work with stones that need to be worked with at a specific time for a specific reason.
I carry one stone with me at all times and that is a meteorite. It gives me the confidence I need in daily activities as well as protection, creativity and strength. It has been with me now for years and its energies are as strong today as they were when it was first given to me.
Along with this I carry with me the stone I am working with at that particular time. By working with I mean a new mineral from which I am trying to learn all I can about that specific mineral.
If I feel my life is unbalanced I will carry with me a mineral to assist me in rebalancing that particular aspect of my life.
Each room in my house has minerals in it based on the specific energies I want for that room.
When traveling I put together a small collection of stones based on that particular trip. I try and limit it to 5 with one always being a clear quartz crystal for general all around use and another being a green tipped quartz crystal for working with nature. The other 2 to 4 would be picked based on specific needs.
Again, for healing and any ritual work I try and use what the situation calls for. I can say this however...Quartz in its various forms is a big part of my work and is the mineral which in most cases I have the greatest connection to.
I try to tell most of the people who I work with that when it comes to minerals.. try not to ask for too much from one particular stone...never close yourself to new posibilities and always keep an open mind... new minerals may well come your way which will prove to be very powerful for situations that you thought was the realm of another mineral alltogether. If you lock yourself into a comfort zone I assure you many amazing things will pass you by, not only in respects to minerals and working with them but life in general as well.

I agree with this statement totally. For some reason i can never properly work with stoes where the combination is more than 13 different types at once. usually i work with at the point almost always is low grade aquamarine, pyrite and amazonite(russian variety in perference). some witches will tell you to keep with you two pieces of lodestones, one for protection and one for luck.

I find the same thing but the number is a lot lower for me. I think that the reason for this is that too many energies tend to "cloud" specific energies or put another way... when working with several stones simultaniously it becomes easy for the energies of one to get lost in all the backround noise. Also... it's a lot easier for the human body to grow accustomed to 2 or 3 differing energies at a time than it is for 20 differing energies. This in turn means a faster/more clear learning curve. I know this is the case or me and it's for this reason that I tend to try and break down all work to its simplist form thus addressing one thing at a time.
As with anything there are exceptions, working with chakras is just one and is probably the best example where working with several minerals at once enhances the work greatly.

amazonite(russian variety in perference).
Its nice to see others out there who feel that a mineral found in one area may well be easier to learn from than the same mineral found in another area. I know Quartz does this for me a lot and I was/am going to address it in the quartz post soon I hope. To put it simply for now.. I find that African quarts is some of the hardest to work with and more times than not takes multiple cleansings but when done can be a very powerful helper. Russian quartz again can be hard to work with initially but makes for great healing stones and a great empathic stone when working with nature...at least Russian green quartz. South American quartz can be some of the most powerful quartz to work with but some pieces at times seem hollow and with very little energy. Arkansas quartz is a great all around quartz and lends itself to all sorts of work. Then there is quartz from India, Tibet and high altitude quarts... all with distinct characteristics/personalities in my opinion.
Anyway.. I'll continue this idea in the quartz thread but it is nice to see others have experienced this as well with minerals.

I'm with both Wolfsong and Lightdragon here. I use my stones as they need to be used. Usually when I meditate on the situation to be delt with, I see the stone I need to use. The stones talk to me. So I can't really list any top ten for you hun sorry.
