I know that the most important thing in spell work is intention and focus, but I prefer my spellwork to be more involved... candles, herbs, writing, incense, chanting, etc...... elaborate......
This however is expensive in my experience. I know most of us MWers are not loaded by any means. What do you do?

I use a lot of dollar store candles and spice rack herbs. I also tend to use aa lot of things that can be picked up for free like oak and willow leaves, acorns, stones shells, ect.

One word.....Improvise.

Use what you have on hand. If it's not the exact type of herb, tool or candle color, use something else. If you don't have any of the occultroments, you can do an entire spell in your head. If you have to write it down on a piece of paper to keep your thoughts together, go for it. Just visualise yourself doing all of it in your head, and build up the energy that way.

Remember the ancient people did not have a five and dimes down the street. Get back to nature! You can find just about everything you need in nature.

Ever seen that one episode of charmed where they slice open an apple and shows you that nature has its own natural pentagram.

I use sock puppets and oreos, plus rocks, and tree limbs, I'll also use whatever else I have lying around.

Visualization and energy work are the best and most important tools for spells.

I improvise all the time. I use a wine glass for a chalice, a stick for a wand, what ever I've got.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again--YOU are the Magic, not the tools.

NOTHING is needed other than you and your intent.

All the other crap...window dressing.

Granted--ain't nothing WRONG with window dressing, but it ain't necessary.

Awesome! Couldn't have said it better!

I write all my own anyway. And I love origami....and so I do origami spells. There is nothing more versitile than a piece of paper.

Pick the corespondance color or pattern. Fold it with intent...stuff it with herbs or crystals, hang it in a window, stick it on your desk (fool your fellow co-workers..heh,heh), or even burn it to an ash. Write on it, draw on it, either outside to make it visible, or inside to make the writing or art hidden... whatever....with a little practice you can make everything from greeting cards, to animals, to usable boxes, to poppets of your mother in law...grab the scissors. LOL! forget I said that last one.

Origami paper is slightly more expensive than other paper you can buy, but at your local craft store the cost for the decorative stuff is usually less than a buck, and you can practice on plain paper until your folds are just right.

If you really want ingredients, paper is cheapest.

Can you tell I have a paper bias?

People should understand that magic is the will of the mind.

All tools and everything else becomes useless without the mind.

Your mind and perception plus the strength of your own resolve and will is the only importance with coming into terms of magic.

Your mind is also the most economical tool at your own disposal.

Never underestimate the power of the human mind and soul.

I don't need tools when I do magik. I learned a form called Imagik (I forget the book) that taught you how to visualize your spell completely in your mind and how to cast it and make it real.

Some say that is the next evolutional stage of magic and it being roughly called sorcery.

It is definately the most economical.

Yes, magic without props is quite economical. However, I find that there is something about having a physical item that engages my mind quite nicely along with my intent, like a living symbol of my will.

I remember a story about actor Jim Carey, who, before he was famous, wrote himself a check for 20 million and carried it around with him. I'm sure that his desire was quite strong, but to be able to reach into his pocket, and grab ahold of that check....it engages all the senses.

Also, it cost him reletively nothing to do.

I find that if nothing else, that writing my intent down has more effect than just speaking it out loud. There's just something about it. Or perhaps it's just easier to have a physical reminder of where my concentration should be while I'm trying to manifest something.

Ah....but that's just my .02 cents. :viking:

There is nothing wrong with magical tools.

I have many.

I just believe the last evolution for any practioner is to use their mind without the intent or use of any tools.

To train with your tools and your own mind are both great aspects.

I hope you certainly didn't think I was against such concepts.

I just think of it as the last test of all practioners to see if they can rely only on theirselves.

No, no...I wasn't trying to suggest that you were against using tools. But I figured that maybe I sounded too...um, pro-tool. I didn't want to come off sounding like I hung my magical fate along with my props:lol: !

So I just restated what my beliefs were just to be clear.

Sorry about my confusement.

We both make good points.
