I'm thinking of planting something around the Macha shrine I tend. So far all I've managed to come up with for herbs and plants associated with Her are mistletoe and mugwort. I can't plant a tree there, otherwise I would plant her a hawthorne tree.

Anyone else have any suggestions for me?

I know you said you couldn't fit a tree but you could train and nurture one like a Bonsai....My first thought was a Blackthorn (http://www.tree2mydoor.co.uk/products/product_details.asp?productid=40&gclid=CLqyxMXYtYUCFRAIHgodtA070Q).

Gaelic Name: Straif

Blackthorn in bloom is considered an emblem of life and death in unison, as the beautiful white flowers appear when the tree has no leaves but only black bark and thorns.
Abilities: Cleansing, ability to rise above troubles and limited choices.
Element: Fire
Season: Spring & late Autumn

They are self propagating so I'm not sure it would work. The Blackthorn and the hawthorn, along with the Rowan and apple, are also in the Rose family of trees. You could get rose bushes (drawf size if need be) in deep red; and I have seen black roses as well.

The shrine sounds lovely!

Well, the shrine is outside and is already bounded by about 3 trees - there simply isn't room for another. Thanks, tho.
