Would learning Reiki make me lose other abilities?

I have several friends who have taken Reiki lessons and consider it very useful. They say it just “takes over” when needed and is not will driven. This method of healing sounds very interesting to me and is something I have been considering taking courses in. The thing is, I worry it may “take over” when I’m trying to use my nature born abilities. I work with Moon and forest magic, and I have become very good at using that type of magic in everything I do, including healing ceremonies.

Do you think learning Reiki will take away from my ability to use Moon energy for healing and other magical purposes? I think learning Reiki would be great, but not at the expense of my Moon and Forest energies that have always proven true to me.

I can't give you a definitive answer. I'll say a few things, though.

I've never heard of anyone saying their healing abilities were diminished; I have heard numerous people say their healing abilites were enhanced or put more readily on-tap.

Second: I had a number of personal problem areas, some physical some emotional (a few things that I had no inkling about, except later in hindsight) that I'd been trying to work on using a variety of techniques... therapeutic techniques, diet, meditative techniques, and so on. I'd been very earnestly ysing these techniques for a number of years. I was startled and amazed when my first Reiki attunement seemed to culminate these efforts in one stroke, so that I came out of the attunement process (took about an hour) almost a different - and better - person than I went in. Then, due to the attunements (I got a couple more in the next months) and with the aid of daily use of the self-healing techniques, a number of physical problems of mine cleared up or improved markedly.

Several other people in the Reiki circles I had contact with said similar things about feeling transformed by the attunement, and other people kind of saw them as a new and improved version of themselves.

One thing for me... I was much more in-touch with nature afterwards, and horses, dogs, birds, and people seemed to like me quite a bit more. :lol:

I don't think everyone gets this effect... seems maybe to depend on prior efforts at personal evolution and self-healing that you may have made. So I guess no guarantees.

I hope this helps in some way, but you have to make up your mind as to whether it all seems right...

goodness no! it will not make you lose your abilities! i repeat it will not make you lose your abilities.
if anything it will enhance your connection to the moon and nature. i know most folks around these parts only know of usui reiki and all the other long established reiki practices, but there are also many other offshoots of reiki that are specifically for the moon, for nature, for the elementals.
there is grandmother moon reiki, elemental reiki, faery realm reiki, ect ect.
all of those practices are about connecting, communing, healing with the elementals and the moon and all the other divine connections that are to be had.
since i have been attuned to reiki i have found that my connection to nature, the elementals, the moon, everything, has been enhanced.
i have done reiki healing ceremonies on nature. i have given reiki to trees in thanks for the healing energies they have given me.
animals love being around me even more than before, they love getting reiki! i've had many an energy healing exchange with animals. its also useful in sending energies to deceased animals and beings who cross your path to help them carry on to the after life.

i've had the assistance of many an deva, elemental, and fae when doing healing work on myself, others and nature. they love it! its universal life force energy, it is the reminder of our connection to all.

it strengthens our healing channels and our connection to both the universe, sky, stars as well as to the earth.

when i had my attunement i was able to see what was happening and who my guides and guardians are. at the time i did not know much about paganism. i saw the elementals that are my guides, guardians and healers. i didn't know why i was seeing a gnome beside me, considering i'd never thought of gnomes as more than story book characters. it is reiki that brought me back onto my spiritual earth centred path.
when the attunment was ending i felt lightning run from the earth, up thru the core of my body and up into the sky.

reconnection for me.

so i hope you understand where i am coming from. reiki got me to reconnect to the earth, so imagine what it will do for you since you already have that sacred connection.

I'll echo the fact that you do not lose other healing abilities. :)

But I do want to address the point you made about having Reiki "take over". What makes this energy different is that it is intelligent (guided by a higher power). ESPECIALLY when one is first attuned the energy will shut on and off at the weirdest times. It is altering and aligning your energetic self to be a better channel and is healing you, though you may not always know what until after. (Tanemon's experiences are quite normal.)

When I went through my first attunement I noticed the energy flow would come on and off randomly as it moved through my and I got acclimated to it. These days (many years later) it's awlays there under the surface, but usually wanits for my permission to express itself. Usually all it takes is me putting my hands on someone for more than a few seconds.

Oh goodness no. If anything Reiki has enhanced my abilities. I think what they mean by take over is that sometimes, when we are not expecting it the energy comes out. For example a friend of mine were having coffee and for some reason i couldn't help but feel Reiki come out of me and on to her right knee. I said, after much self doubt, "is there something wrong with your right knee?" She said that she had fallen and twisted her knee on the stairs the day before and it still hurt a little. It can also enhance your other abilites. one example is when I was healing someone and the goddess Brigid just showed up. The "flavor" of energy changed to a much more intense firey type. It was really interesting.

Certainly not. Reiki is all about learning to broadcast energies at the highest and best frequency one can. If anything the training should enhnace your natural abilities to call in forest and moon energy. When I started my reiki attunements it enhanced natural abilities I had, like "seeing" my guides or focusing during meditation or calling in energies.

I have found, like the previous posters, that Reiki enhances my abilities and that animals are much more responsive than they were before Reiki. I can't sit down without having at least one animal touching me. When I go visit, other animals just come and want to sit with me. Drives their owners nuts.:)

yeah...animals have always been attracted to me, but since being attuned it's really increased. It's either that, or the animals feel something different about me and are scared of me - but I almost always win them over after a few minutes. :)
