Hi all! I was just cruising the chapters bookstore out here and i came across a book on voodoo. Well, it's always kind of interested me so i picked it up. I know Voodoo is its own religion unto itself, but i was just wondering if there was anyone online here who could tell me the basic belief system and such. Im quite interested, and if anyone has any info relating to Voodoo I would love to hear it! thanks :D

I don't know anything about it but I remember seeing a few threads around on the subject. Did you try doing a site search?

Voodoo is a religion which beliefs in one Supreme God and lesser spirits of gods/goddesses. The Supreme God was came into play when the Catholic Cults came into Africa. When Europeans started taking Africans and putting them into different regions for slavery, one of these areas was Haiti. The Africans didn't know where the people that practiced like them were, so they started to make families, which started communities, which started a religious culture based upon Catholicism, Native American, and Christian teachings.
Haiti is the main place where Voodoo gained its growth. Voodoo has many spellings such as Voudo, Vodou, and Voudou. It is not originally spelled Voudon and such with "n" at the end of it. Voodoo in Haiti is very religious, they have Temples. Each temple have a Priest and/or a Priestess and they perform religious ceremonies annually or occasionally. Peasants fear black magick and they look to the Voodoo religion to protect them from evil forces of people.
Voodoo does this thing with spirit possession, they become horses for the Lao. They take on the spirit and act it out.
Homosexuality isn't an issue with Voodoo, Gay Men do sometimes take on a female spirit and are admired by alot of Circles because of their manly structure with female movements. Homosexuality also makes up the largest chunk of the Voodoo Religion.
Voodoo spread to America and was mainly used by the Africans in the South in Louisiana, especially New Orleans. This type of Voodoo circulated more around Magick rather then Religion. More corn dollies and dolls were used, it was alot more solitary in practicing.
There's many different traditions of Voodoo because of the seperation and integration of cultures.
