Sometimes, when you go to a veterinarian with your pets, it seems like they see so many animals a day, that they are very impersonal, and almost coldly efficient about their work. And then sometimes, you run across a WONDERFUL veterinarian, who's love for animals just radiates right out of him. I'm lucky enough to have one such Vet.
This particular Veterinarian, makes house calls. He intended to set up his practice in a neighboring town, bought the property, and got verbal approval from the appropriate commissions. However, unfortunately, he never had it put in writing. The commission at the time of the verbal agreement, seemed enthusiastic, since they had been without a Vet in that area for quite some time. But..after he built his office, the commission came and told him he could not have animals on the property, because it wasn't Zoned. They never told him that ahead of time, so now he has a building he can't use. So..he loves animals so much, that instead of just selling the building, he just uses that to house the supplies, and run lab specimens, etc. But..to do everything else, he comes to your house. Of course, there are drawbacks. He can't do X-rays, and he Can't do Surgeries. For that, you have to go to another vet. But..he is absolutely incredible for "sniffles", and other run of the mill problems.
A while back, all of our cats came down with ear-mites, since it is highly contagious. And he gave us eardrops to use on all of them. He examined all the cats, at our home, gave us two prescriptions for them..and the bill only came to thirty dollars.
Anyway, the ear mites have come back recently, and we started using the drops again. One of our cats has had an allergic reaction to them, though, and his ear is now bright red. So I just called the vet, and he called me back immediately. I explained the dilemma, and without trying to schedule another appointment, he said he'd just order a differen't prescription for our cats, told us he'd give us enough to use on all the cats, and that he wouldn't charge us for it. Then he asked how each of the cats was doing, otherwise, and chatted with me for a bit about each of them. He thinks my littlest cat is extraordinary, and said that it's rare to find people who care so much about their animals.
He's such a wonderful doctor, and obviosly, a major animal lover. I'm so lucky!
