Hey everyone this thread is for you to come and introduce yourself, tell me what your experiences is with sewing whether or not you will be sewing by hand or by machine, and what particular things you would like to learn in this class. Oh and if you are using a sewing machine please let me know what type of sewing machine your using.

As for me I have been hand sewing since I was about 10 and machine sewing well off and on since high school even more so since 1999 when I bought my own sewing machine to do my costumes for my wedding…

My goal in teaching this class is to teach the basics of sewing and expand even more on what I already know.

Please feel free to pm me any questions you may have ok?

MM All,
Well, my experiences of sewing are quite extensive, but unfortunately most of them involve a humourous story about things went drastically wrong! I am much more comfortable with hand sewing than machine, but hope to try to get to know my machine a bit better through these classes, so will try to avoid the temptation to say 'ah b*ggrit* and go back to hand sewing as much as I can!!

The machine I will be using is a Janome 'New Home' machine, model number 5001..I bought it second hand from ebay about 4-5yrs ago now, and have as yet to master it properly...I have no clue how to adjust for fabric thicknesses and tensions and stuff like that, and have mainly used only the very basic stuff on it like a normal running type stitch. It has 31 computerised stitch thingies including the buttonhole stitches, and other than that all the normal sewing machine type stuff...

I have used the machine to make bags, simple dresses etc., but have also never actually used a sewing pattern, I always do it 'out of my head' sort of thing, so learning how to decipher a sewing pattern might be nice too!

I guess my goal in these classes is to properly learn the basics, so that instead of it being a 50/50 shot that something will come out as I intended, it is a bit more guaranteed!:hehehehe:

Hey,

Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Silver and I am not new to sewing in general. When I was little I would do embroidery and also there was a lady on the street we lived on that would help us sew quilt pieces together. I have tried machine sewing, but I am horrible at it. So Hymnia, you are going to have to spend a lot of time with me on that. I am going to be going to Summer quarter at South University (my college) to try to get to my graduation date quicker so I might be a little late on assignments but I will try to make sure I get them done quickly. Thanks.

I always do it 'out of my head' sort of thing, Ok ya know I do not feel so alone now :D And I still have not figured out how to use the the buttonhole stitches on my machine I still do prefer to do those by hand lol :D

So Hymnia, you are going to have to spend a lot of time with me on that. Not a problem considering I am going to need help sooner or later with your class to so I say we will be even lol :D

Thanks you two for the intros :)

Hi, I'm queenie. I've only sewed a few bags and my skills are pretty much minimum. I'll be hand-sewing and I'd love to learn how to "freestyle"

Heya.

Um... my sewing skills suck. XD I can do some hand sewing, but my stitches are not neat in the slightest, and are often too loose to really be any good (and I still don't know how to like "end" stitching), and I have a little bit of experience with sewing machines. My mom taught me a little last summer, but all I've managed is a not-straight line, and how to press the foot pedal a bit too hard to make the fabric go "whee!" through the machine (it's late. Sorry about my silly description. xP).

My goal in these lessons is to learn how to hand sew decently, and at least have some clue of how to use a sewing machine (but I'm really going with the hand sewing. It's likely this fall I won't have access to a machine all that often). :3 I'm not sure what machine my mother has, I'll have to check tomorrow and see (and edit the post).

Matierial is not cheap anywhere that is why you need to watch for the remmants bins and sales.

Another tip for fabric is charity shops...old curtains, duvet covers, pillow cases, skirts can all be hacked up and recycled..thats basically what I will probably be doing 8O You can also buy cheap sheets cheaper than fabric now in some places, here tesco, asda (walmart) etc all do sheets for around £4, the best part is a lot of the time they are easy to dye too, so that's another option to funky your fabric up a bit!

I don't have a lot of spare cash for craft materials so tend to make do and recycle as much as possible!:hehehehe:

i do have some of that squared stuff they make from summer dresses. The lady in our fabric shop sold me too much so everything cost about £12 to make a skirt =/

Hello!
I'm a 24 year old Australian who is a complete novice in sewing but is wanting to learn more about it. I want to start doing Applique (?) techniques and, to do that, I need to know how to sew. Also, I want to start making my own clothes one day because its getting too expensive to buy new cloths.
I have the material and sewing equipment ready!
:hugz: and thank you for creating this class!
