I have to go in for one next month to check the baby's lungs. If it looks good and his lungs are ready they will induce the next day. I am terrified of needles and will have them set something up to keep me from being able to see but I want to know what to expect. Please help.

I dont know,as I've never had one. I do know that they will numb the area where they insert the needle so you dont feel it.. Maybe you should talk to your doctor before it's done, just to know what to expect. :hugz: :)

At 35 weeks the baby is already 6 pounds 11 ounces, he is running out of fluid in there as well as room, he is finished developing as best they can see on the ultrasounds. I am having difficulty walking the strain is becoming too much on my back, I am diabetic, my ankles are begining to swell up pretty bad. I have had a 10 pound baby before and judging by his current growth rate he will be over 11 pounds at term. With all the factors figured in it is safest to give him a little more cooking time then get him out safely if his lungs are ready. They think they might be ready now but want me to be a bit closer to 37 weeks.

Yvonne, I had an amnio with my now 11 year old daughter. I was completely terrified but after it was done, I kicked myself for letting myself get all worked up. I have to say, the needle is scary so turn your head honey. Just try to remain calm & use the same technique you would use during labor & it will go much smoother than you can imagine. I had this whole mind over matter mantra going on in my head & got through it just fine, so will you!!! I'm diabetic too & goddess knows I pray for a cure for that every night. Damnit, I want a hot fudge sundae!!!! LOL Nothing worse than being preggers & having major cravings that you really can't have. Could make a girl bitter especially when everyone around is eating what you want!!!

Best of luck & remember stay calm, mind over matter sweetie!

Thank you. Needles terrify me and I am trying to have as much knowledge before hand as possible to counter the fear.

Oh, what a ditz I am. Sorry, you wanted to know what to expect.:::slaps self upside head::: They will ultrasound for an good area to insert the needle, they use betadine to clean up your tummy. They use a topical ointment to numb your skin. When they insert the needle, it hurts a little :::start using breathing technique now:::& you will feel some pressure when they extract the fluid, which will take just a few minutes & then you're all done. After I had mine done, I cradled my tummy like it were made of glass & walked as if I were on eggshells. I was paranoid but I had lost twins the pregnancy before that so I was a nervous wreck about everything.
My fears & preconcieved notions was what was the hardest part not the actual procedure but there again, I was paranoid after my first experiences with my twin pregnancy.

All information is helpful at this point. At least I know I won't be alone I am snagging the baby's father from work that morning and not giving him a chance to run late.

Ok, I wasn't aware of this.

Yeah I have been worried since his growth spurt that he was going to be big as in really big. In one respect it was nice to have it confirmed so I knew I wasn't just being paranoid in another I wish I was wrong.

They numbed my tummy and inserted a needle. I didn't watch that part, and I don't remember even feeling the insertion. I got to watch the baby on the monitor--they run an ultrasound at the same time, so you can use that to distract yourself.

I had cramping and otehr unhappiness later, after I got home from the amnio. I took a nap and felt much better when I woke up.

That was it--the whole big deal.

I am hoping they can set up some sort of curtain so I don't have to see the needle at all. I am a bit frightened which I know will make it worse.

Have you been insulin-regulated through the pregnancy?

Yes but they didn't get it under control till my 28th week. My doctor was an idiot. I kept telling him the insulin was wrong. Instead of listening to me he kept upping the dose. I was bottoming out twice a day with sugars around 15 and needing to eat large amounts of candy to bring it back up. If I didn't take the insulin he told me to my sugar shot up to 300. This last time they stuck me in the hospital I spoke with another doctor and mentioned the insulin my friend takes. We discussed it as well as what had been going on with my sugar and he agreed it was not the right insulin for me nor the right dose. He switched me over to lantus and it has been working really well till about two weeks ago when I started getting super stressed. Lately I have been taking some humolog from time to time to keep my sugars safe. This is working much much better for me and my highest sugar has been 180 :)

I had to have an amnio with my son and it went very well. I carried him really high, so they had to go in very near my belly button. It really doesn't hurt...it's more discomfort than anything. When they insert the needle, you will need to lie very still, but you won't really feel much but pressure. They had a little more difficulty with mine because they had to go in so high to avoid the baby and I kept having little contractions around the needle, but everything went just fine. Absolutely turn your head and don't look at the needle. My son's dad had to leave the room while they did it because it made him squeamish. I'll send you some positive, protective and calming energy to get through this just fine. :hugz:

I've never been pregnant or had an amniosentisis, but I wish you the best of luck with your procedure. It'll be over before you know it. :hugz:
