David Bowie - remember him? Probably not unless you're of my generation! He first shot to fame the year of the Apollo Moon landing with a single called "Space Oddity" (this was a pun on the film "2001", subtitled "A Space Odyssey", released the year before). He was always a rather outrageous figure - probably the first rock star to proclaim that he was gay (though he's actually bisexual).
His outrageous views came to the fore in 1976, when he gave an interview praising Hitler, saying that he (Bowie) would make a great fascist leader and that Britain would benefit from a fascist government, and was photographed giving a Nazi salute. This was at a time when the far-right "National Front" were starting to gain some prominence in the UK - they have a record of violence against black people, Jews and gays, so Bowie's support for them was pretty shocking. His words to a Swedish journalist were: 'As I see it I am the only alternative for the premier in England. I believe Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism.'
His far-right views also can't sit very comfortably with the fact that he is currently married to an African-American woman.
Anyway, enough of the potted history - he's pretty much slipped into obscurity in recent years, until last month. After two years of being almost invisible, he made a surprise reappearance in the UK on stage with Pink Floyd legend Dave Gilmour (see link here: http://www.lse.co.uk/ShowbizNews.asp?Code=AF312643W&headline=david_bowies_live_return)
I wondered what was happening in his chart - and discovered that the very day of the reappearance was his exact Saturn return (the Saturn return occurs every 30 years approximately - Bowie is now 59). He's also got transiting Chiron right on his Ascendant!
Saturn is about issues from the past, and reconciling them - the start of a new 30-year cycle. His ill-fated remarks supporting the far right happened 30 years ago - close to his first Saturn return.
I think we may be hearing more from Bowie over the next year - that this new Saturn return of his will bring up this past history so that he can deal with it. His remarks 30 years ago were at a time when he was heavily involved in drugs (by his own admission he was "living on a diet of milk and cocaine") and I think he regrets his earlier extreme fascist views.
