I hope to get some clarity on this and I would like to offer my own input as well.

I have dabbled extensively in divination. I have spoke to several phone psychics and seen many tarot readers. I have a tarot deck for myself. The trouble I have is the question of wheher the future already set and is something yet to unfold or do we create the future using our intentions either conciously or unconciously?

There is an abundance of literature; Conversations with God, Creative Visualization, Power of Intention, Ask and it is Given, Seat of the Soul, and so forth that suggest that we create whatever we want.. if our intention is clear enough the universe simply must grant us what we desire. As is universal law.

If this is true why would we need divination?

my opinion is that people use fortune-telling by means of divination because
they fear the unknown and want to attain a sense of control over there own
lives.
fortune-telling is just one means of using divination, and it's a truly sad thing
that the majority equate divination as being the same as fortune-telling.
to believe in destiny is to say that everything within our world, and within all
existence works in a clockwork fashion, that there are no surprises that
aren't part of the greater design, that everything happens for a reason.
this imo is the same as trying to gain a sense of control over one's life by
means of fortune-telling,and is a product of fear of the unknown.

Basically it can serve as a road map, giving you a chance to know when the road is bumpy, smooth, winding about, under construction etc.

Just like when you are headed out on a trip (life is a journey....) and you choose rain gear or you leave extra time because you know the road is a dirt road with pot holes.
