View Full Version : Keep me in your thoughts

On Wed. morning at 7:30 AM I go in for back surgery. I'm having what they call a microdiscetomy--they make an incision and go in and pick off the pieces of the herniated discs that are laying on my sciatic nerve.
In theory-this should end the pain and possibly let me get full use of my right leg back.... but also in theory I could end up with no use of that leg if they 'pick' off the wrong thing. (small chance-but still there)

From your mouth to the gods' ears!
Thanks to all for the healing thoughts.
I've been added to a couple of prayer lists by some Christian friends of mine, as well. I can tell the difference in the way I feel when all that healing is headed this way.
love ya all!

I didn't even know they could do this... I had a disk rupture about 17 years ago... I was getting dressed to drive 2 hours to spend Thanksgiving with my family, went anyway. By the next morning I could not get out of bed on my own or even go to the bathroom by myself. It was excruciating. I still have trouble standing for more than about 5 minutes or walking for more than 10 minutes. You have my sympathy and best wishes.

My dad had this surgery several years ago and it was a great success for him. In fact, he had less pain just right off the operating table than he'd had in years. I'm sure you'll have just as successful surgery and recovery as he did.
Good luck!

Yeah--the surgery techniques have become quite advanced since I injured this 11 years ago.
Glad to hear, Dio, that it was successful for your dad. I haven't run across anyone else who'd had it.

Just wanted to update everyone. I will also update her about this thread, as I am sure Rick will too.

And not tooooo loopy at this second. Just a bit tired and shaky. Itchy too, must have been some xylocain in some of that they gave me.
While I’m sore from the surgery—the nerve pain down my back and leg ‘seems’ to be gone.
When we got home from the hospital, my boss had sent pizza to the house. ‘course the boys had already started in on that.
Thanks for the energies!

Slept almost all day today--had plans to run up to Dollar General and pick up some big bandaids and steristrips, but that didn't happen. Guess I really needed it.
Only took one pain pill today so far, so I'm considering that a good thing.

Had my checkup appointment with my neurosurgeon today. Was upfront and honest and told him I've actually been going to work since Monday--but was lying down when needed and also walking every half hour or so, but only working between 4-6 hours a day.
He said I'm doing exactly what needs to be done. back looks well - don't need to keep bandages on it... he said that I must have been in a terrible amount of pain...not only was the disc bulged out and on the sciatic--I'd also blown out some of the cartildge and that was also against the nerve--he said the nerve was right against it and since it was as hard as bone, I must of been in some terrific pain-- UMMMM--yeah... that's what I'd been saying. He said most people couldn't have handled that much pain.
Wants me to see him in a month--still no lifting over 10 pounds--I'm good with that.
