Holiday advice please

My Boyfriend and I are planning to go on an extended holiday next year spending a couple of months touring around Mexico and Central America. Although he has done a fair bit of travelling before I am a total novice but as you can imagine I am very excited about going.

I wondered if any of you had done the same or even lived in the area and could give me some tips and advice about safety and how to behave and of course some really good places to visit. I'd rather have personal recommendation than go to all the places the guidebooks say.
