I found this site interesting and was wondering if anyone has used these types of maps and if they are helpful or not.

i suppose so ... i used the mineral maps in the special collections at the nevada public library before going out to a couple of spots ... but, not at any high, sophisticated level, just on the let's go hiking and i wanted an excuse to look at the maps in the special collections ... but nothing serious.

This looks really interesting. I usually just get in touch with local rockhounding clubs or rockshops before I head out. This could help a lot however.

Usually I just look around the area I am visiting, but this time I am trying to approach it from a different angle and find the right area and then look. Not too sure if it will make that big of a difference.

Besides specific places, mines or known mineral deposits, I usually always stop at river gravel beds or along rocky/gravel lake/ocean shorelines.

Many people like stopping at rock-cuts as well; especially down logging or gravel roads. I've never tried this however

I had collected all of my rocks from either the Fraser River, logging roads, the ocean and dried river beds (over 10 yrs). Unfortunately when we sold the house I didn't get the chance to go bring any of them with me, so I am starting a new collection.

Hopefully I will be able to find more minerals - Although I love all rocks I haven't had much luck yet finding any.
