I would say that it all depends on who you wish to invoke. Choose a deity and do a bit of research on their symbols and personality. Some God/desses are easier to work with than others.

At first you could just try meditating on their name and one of their symbols. For instance, if you chose Maat, you might meditate on a feather or scales. Carefully note any impressions or feelings you may have.

For a start, you might want to begin by inviting them rather than invoking them, as some deities might not appreciate being called upon by someone they have not chosen.

As for what to say, you could write a small invocation yourself, calling upon them or inviting them to come to you. There are many generic invocations available on the web which you could alter to your needs, it may help to do a search on the internet.

This site conatains some examples which you may find useful- http://www.crosswinds.net/~spiritpaths/invocations.htm

I hope this helps you some,

You might want to reconsider the differences between invoke, evoke, and invite. Invoking a deity is pretty heavy.

...And, it's not something you do to "see if it works". You usually need a pretty decent intent with this one.

So . . . what are some decent reasons to invoke (as opposed to evoke and invite)?

MM,
I have the book "Summoning Forth Wiccan Gods and Goddesses" which talks about how to do invocation and evocation. Invocation is mainly done with just one person since you have the god-form or goddess-form enter your body. Evocation is mainly done in groups, but can be done by yourself. Evocation is when you call upon a God-form or Goddess-form to enter your cirlce, and possibly materialize. I haven`t done the evocation that the book gives, but if you want to do the invocation email me and let me know and i`ll go ahead and give you the instructions.
