Got home from work tonight, and left my front door open so I could carry groceries in. On my second trip, spotted the neighbor's cat coming out of my bedroom! I chased it out the door, then went to check on my bedroom. Look what the cat left on my bed!

It's a twelve inch-long Ground Snake (Sonora semiannulata). It has a few tooth punctures from the cat, but seems to be ok. Who knows, though. We'll see if it's still alive tomorrow.

The neighbor's cat must really really like you. That's a fine trophy for it to be hanging over to you.

Well I wish it didn't. It's an obnoxious pain in the rear!

You must give it kibble, or pet it or something, because it's obvious that it's in love with you.

Or it hates you, and was planning on killing the snake on your bed to be vengeful, and then dragging it off.

I try to ignore it...

ohh... what a cute little snake you have there, nice color, brigth orange. maybe is a message, someone is trying to tell you something, or maybe the snake is your familiar and was triying to reach you. you should meditate about that posibility.

Lovely color for a snake.

Yes, and no. They have a mildly toxic saliva. However, the saliva isn't capable of affecting anything bigger than a bug, and the size of it's mouth, combined with the fact that they are rear-fanged means they couldn't possibly deliver a bite to something the size of a human anyway.

will you keep it? Are you even allowed to keep it legally?

Legally, I am allowed to keep it. It is not a protected or restricted species here. They are actually fairly common in these parts. I, however, will not keep it. I don't generally keep wild species, unless there is some medical reason why they couldn't survive in the wild (like the lizard I have who's back legs don't work very well). This guy seems fiesty this morning, so I'll turn him loose later.

I have a patron at the library who is a vet tech. She just picked up the snake. She's going to take it to work and have it checked out. Then she'll turn it loose.

uh.. no.. actually it doesn't taste like chicken.. it does have a mild flavor... so really it would depend on the seasonings used.
