After many months of patience and watching her grow from stray kitten, the stray mama cat that hangs out in my yard finally let me pet her. She had 5 kittens about 3 weeks ago but 2 didn't make it. Yesterday evening we had a rainstorm that dropped about 2 inches of rain in about an hour so water ran under our storage shed where the mama cat had her kittens. I took a warm towel from the dryer out and dried the kittens for her. She didn't mind me touching the kittens as long as I left her alone. I took some canned cat food out to her(the healthiest kitten was even eating the food) and she let me pet her! I'm worried about 2 of the kittens because they seem to be smaller than the other one. One of the kittens has a virus that makes the eyes swell and could lead to blindness. I've got eye drops from the vet but he said it may not work if the kitten has had this virus for long. The other small kitten just doesn't seem to have much energy. The mama cat has left them where I moved them to last night(its a nice dry spot). She was even meowing for me when I took out some food this morning. I'll just watch the kittens and hope they'll all be OK. Hopefully, the mama will continue letting me pet her. After she weans these babies I want to get her to the vet and have her spayed. She is a pretty golden brown tabby. I'm such a sucker for kitties. :D

Cool. _catroll_ The tomcat here didn't let me pet him for months (I think it had something to do with the trapping and neutering :ggrief: ) but then one day he finally gave in, and now he can't get enough. :lol: Hopefully your mama cat will feel the same. :smile: :hugz:

Aww, thanks for taking care of them! There's something so special about a feral cat allowing you to pet them! It's like you've won a prize!! Luck to those kittens and mama cat!

That is so amazing. Meowing at you means she isn't feral anymore! She knows you are helping.

I would contact a local cat rescue group immediately - they may have a foster home with someone trained to bottle feed - though they are only a week from being old enough to wean. For ferals four weeks is the ideal age to take kittens who need to be socialized from their mother. (It also gets increasingly difficult to capture them after that.)

:[ I just three weeks ago had to take 8 week old kittens from their feral mother. I felt like a horrible person breaking up the family - but the kittens are so happy in their new homes, and mama cat still eats on my porch and gives me sleepy eyes. :X Little does she know she's getting spayed this Sunday. Hopefully she'll forgive that too. ;_;

Looks like my mama cat is going to loose all three kittens. The healthy one was having problems this morning breathing. I'm wooried a snake may have bitten her but the mama cat was not very eager to let me near the babies today.
