Is there any difference whether I use crystal rocks or sand in the bowl (I'm sorry, but I just forgot the correct term to use) in which I burn my incense?

Do you mean in a bowl as a base which to burn your incense on? Sand is good because it won't let the incense get out of control...especially if you're burning it indoors. Or do you mean using sand or crystals in energy workings? If it's the first thing, I like using sand as the base. It provides a nice stable base for the incense to sit on. As well, you don't have to worry about the bowl getting too hot & shattering. You can place your crystals around the incense in the sand.

The "bowl" I was talking about is censer (laugh away, I'm still learning the vocabulary;-D ) in which I place the piece of charcoal for burning the incense. I have a really nice one, but it tends to get very hot with the crystal rocks. I think I'll get some sand instead. Someone told me that it's not good (magically speaking) to let the little crystal rocks get hot. I wonder if there's any truth to that and why?
