I am looking for mystical or herbal solutions to Cat Fleas, I have two cats and gave them the Advantage flea treatment on the back of the neck today. I was wondering if there was any other suggestions. My girlfriend has flea bites all over her legs and I can see the cats are suffering. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The toxicity of pennyroyal is a controversal subject, probably because little research has been done on the herb's safe use. What is clear so far is that the use of concentrated pennyroyal, such as pennyroyal essential oil, is dangerous for any animal including humans if ingested. Preparations based on pennyroyal such as sprays may also be too concentrated and therefore unsafe. However there is a documented traditional use of pennyroyal for flea control. For example, the well-known advocate of natural animal care, Juliette de Bairacli Levy, recommended its use on animals years ago. Possibly future research will show that the use of fresh pennyroyal -- e.g. rubbing fresh leaves on the animal -- is safe. The key seems to be to limit the inadvertent ingestion of pennyroyal, and using herbal anti-flea collars impregnated with pennyroyal may be one way to prevent ingestion. By the way, other herbs used for flea control include tansy, fleabane, and eucalyptus. They too are probably best used in herbal flea collars; for example, de Bairacli Levy recommends a flea collar made of woven eucalyptus in her book "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat".]

In order to deal with the fleas that presently exist, you might want to look at the formula for "Lemon Lotion" in Juliette de Bairacli Levy's book, "The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat" or try doing a herbal rinse with the herbs Feverfew herb (Tanacetum parthenium), Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis), Celery seeds (Apium graveolens), Yarrow herb/flowers (Achillea millefolium) and Mullein flowers (Verbascum thapsus). Fleas will still need to removed with a flea comb and drowned in a jar of soapy water and you will also still need to clean the house thoroughly to remove any fleas or lavae that may be waiting to start their next life cycle.

Fleas can be an on-going battle. One doesn't want to be so heavyhanded with chemicals that the immune system is impaired, but at the same time one does not want the flea to take over and create an infestation that will also cause disease. Brewers yeast and garlic can be effective flea deterrents. The sugars in some commercial cat foods may also make an animal more attractive to fleas and they are particularly vulnerable if they have a weak immune system. It is therefore very important to feed pure foods - whether cooked or commercial - and to supplement with a good feline multi vitamin and mineral formula.

The main anti-flea herbs are eucalyptus citronella, cedar, rosemary and fennel which can be pulverised and made into a flea powder. you can also make good herbal collars from herbal oils.

Brewer's yeast or garlic added to pet food keeps fleas away

Yeast is an effective way to control fleas, particularly if your pet's health is good to begin with. Many people also praise garlic as an effective flea repellent, though current scientific studies do not yet support this. (You may also rub trace amounts of garlic directly into your pet's coat as a means to apply.)

Personally I would keep a couple pennyroyal or fleabane plants inside the house in pots or plant pennyroyal outside the house as a garden bed cover.

Make a spray for the hard floors of garlic, diluted pennyroyal and eucalyptus oil. Mist that around the door jams and on the floors. Steer clear of their food bowls and boxes but do spray the corners and floor boards...you may even want to make the powder to sprinkle in the carpet.

Good Luck

If you did the Advantage flea treatment today, in 24 hours time, you will not have any flea problems. Advantage is quite possibly the greatest invention since the wheel. If you're using Advantage, don't use any other flea product such as sprays or dips. They're not necessary, and if used with another product such as Advantage, could be toxic.

Now, you may have a couple live fleas still in your house, but as soon as they jump on your kitties, they're dead meat. You really don't need any other remedies at this point. Sorry if I sound like an Advantage commercial, but for years we routinely had a "flea circus" in our home by the end of August, no matter how much we bathed the animals and used flea spray, and it just didn't work well at all. Advantage has completely eliminated this, and fleas are not a problem now at all. :) :) :)

Advantage for the kitties! Unfortunately some of my rescues that got Advantage had fleas abandoning ship... then the kittens went to the foster home and the only meat left in the house was me! I mopped all of the floors, washed all of the bedding/sofa cover etc. with hot soapy water. And placed a chopped up flea collar in the canister of my vacuum - and did all the carpet and hard surfaces. The fleas were gone in just a few days after that... although the flea PARANOIA remained about two weeks. :[

Also - Advantage is a mystic solution... because it works like magic.

The fleas are bad this year. But I have found something that has helped considerably. I live about 25 miles away from an Reservation, and they have a holistic center there. I have started to volunteer there to help mix herbs and restock. They have a peppermint/hemp soap that works wonders on fleas. Diluting it, and spraying on the animals once every few days, a good brushing and our flea problems are just about over. If you bath them then it should remain on the animal for 5 to 10 minutes.

The peppermint soap smoothers the fleas within the 5 to 10 minute time limit. After you rinse off the animal completely allow to air dry in a warm place so that they animal doesn't get sick from a chill. Then using a flea comb remove all dead fleas. The spray made from Peppermint oil soap can also be used on rugs, and furniture without harming it. Spray the house down fully in all rugs and corners since that is where fleas like to live when not on your pet. If you dread giving a cat a bath, you can soak a towel in the mixer of 1 part soap to 2 parts water, and wrap the animal in the towel leave wrapped for the full 10 minutes, let dry and comb.

Place a tissue soaked with the mixture and place inside of a vaccum cleaner bag, vaccum up the rug and remove the bag into an outside receptical. The peppermint oil on the tissue will sufficate any fleas that have been removed from the carpet and or your pet through this manner. Vaccum at least twice a week as a control measure. This solution may also be used on the lawn to control the fleas outside.

This soap is safe for most animals, including but not limited to Dogs, Cats, Puppies and kittens (note use a more diluted solution for young animals of 1 part soap to 3 parts water), and ferrets, etc.
