I've been visiting this site for a little while now, and love the place! I was just wondering how everyone chose their names (the ones you use in this forum). It would be interesting to hear.

I chose the name Ganga because I just love the Ganges river. She is very powerful. There's a story that tells how she descended to the Earth, but I have to tell it next time because my two kids are begging to have their turn to use the computer now... See ya!

To see what people have said before do a search - there's probably half a dozen threads on this here at MW. I can't remember why I chose mine but I think I posted it before.

Flaire-FireStar

Flaire was a character that I used to play in an RPG (which is gone now..:wah: ) But in the time that I was playing that character, the handle "Flaire" became like a second name to me (people still call me that, rather than what my original handle was :p)

I got Wildchild from Enya's song of the same name. When I first heard the song, I thought it was so beautiful. I felt like it touched that bit of wildness inside of me. Heh! If you could see me, I look anything but wild.

well i was bored and young and decided to make a website... so I thought ok, my name was Jason... now what... so i proclaimed myself to be "Cool" so added Cool in front of it... and kept only the J.... CoolJ seemed to be alright to say and sounded much better than than the corny method used to make it might suggest lol...

then after going 3 years online as CoolJ... some1 on Inklink (http://www.shockwave.com) pointed out that my name beared a striking resemblence to LL Cool J ..... lol... i never noticed that to tell the truth... hehehehe

Doctor Oakroot
February 22nd, 2002, 08:06 AM
A few (well, many) years ago while meditating in preparation for becoming high priest of a coven, my spirit guide gave me the new name "Black dragon of the abyss arising from the root of the oak" - which got shortened to "Dragon Oakroot" for everyday use.

(BTW, my spirit guide is a dryad - the spirit of an oak tree)

As it happens, I have a Doctor of Witchcraft degree, so the name sometime became "Doctor Oakroot"

This has always been a public Witch name (vs my secret Witch name known only to those present at my initiation).

A few years later, I was playing in a band fronted one of my covenmates, and he introduced me on stage as "Bluesman Doctor Oakroot." The name stuck as a performing name as well as a Witch name.

Ganga

So that's the "wisdom plant" someone mentioned earlier. I had no idea, Manstranger! Oh well, I definitely didn't choose my name with marijuana in mind. (I don't even drink coffee because of its caffeine content.)

Ganga is pronounced a bit like Kangaroo without the Roo. The letter "a" sounds more like "u" in "hut", not like "a" in "cat".

She is really an amazing river that originates in the spiritual realm from where it flows to the Polar Star, and is then carried in celestial airplanes to the other heavenly planets, finally reaching the Moon, etc. She hits the Earth first on the Himalayas, flows into the ocean, and continues her journey to the lower regions (hellish planets). Everywhere she goes, she purifies those that bathe in her waters. Her descend didn't happen without trouble, though. Because she is so powerful, her flow thretened to inundate the three worlds till Siva came to rescue and caught her in his hair. From his head she could continue to flow in a gentler current. To me this story talks about very strong, motherly power. She is also known to be playful at times.

I agree with Nissala. Use numerology to find a really powerful name. There is an excellant software package available called "The Instant Numerologist" that you will find really great.
