DISNEY ALERT! Arrgh..I HAD to share this. I knew Disney was getting pathetic when they were stealing ideas form good, tragic fairy tales, anime, and whatnot...but THIS...this is just pathetic.
Disney Bets on Piglet's Prospects
Tue Feb 19, 2:49 AM ET
By Scott Hettrick
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Disney is quietly preparing "The Jungle Book II" and "Piglet's Big Movie" for theatrical release next year, but you won't find them on the production schedule at Walt Disney Pictures.
Like last weekend's second biggest theatrical release, "Return to Never Land," they are being produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the most prolific and one of the most profitable production units at the company in recent years.
Some insiders at Disney believe that "Return to Never Land" could wind up as the studio's most profitable theatrical release this year, at least on a percentage basis. The $19.5 million-budgeted film grossed an estimated $16.1 million in its first four days.
The division has more than a dozen animated movie projects for theatrical and video release in various stages of development, almost all of them sequels or spin-offs of animated movies and characters created from scratch by the studio's film division.
They range from adaptations of classic library titles like "Dumbo II" and "101 Dalmatians the Animated Sequel" to recent blockbusters like "Tarzan II" and "The Lion King III," as well as "Mulan II" and "Mulan III."
And that doesn't count the animated series produced for broadcast, cable, syndicated and international markets, including a TV series to be followed by a video premiere movie sequel in 2004 based on Disney's upcoming summer animated theatrical feature "Lilo and Stitch."
With relatively tiny budgets, the TV animation movies are solid profit centers for Disney, whether they get a theatrical or video premiere. For instance, while sources estimate a budget range from about $8 million-$15 million for each Disney TV production that takes about 2-1/2 years, "The Tigger Movie" generated $46 million in domestic box office receipts and nearly double that worldwide before it even went to video.
By comparison, Disney's full-scale animated films take twice as long to produce and have budgets of $75 million-$100 million or more since characters and background designs are created from scratch. The last two releases, "The Emperor's New Groove" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," have generated less than $90 million each at U.S. theaters.
The profitability picture when a Disney TV movie premieres on video is often even greater. Disney's last two video premieres, "Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure" and "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea," have generated about $150 million each in domestic consumer spending, according to Daily Variety sister publication Video Business. That is comparable to, or sometimes more than, video revenue for Disney's theatrical features that cost from five to 10 times as much to produce.
And the potential upside for a video premiere is just as high as a theatrical release. Consumers spent about $300 million on "The Lion King II," more than the box office receipts from any animated theatrical release in history except one, the $313 million of the original "The Lion King" in 1994.
Disney TV usually doesn't know as it starts development and even begins production on a movie whether it will wind up in theaters or as a video premiere. After originally being penciled in as a theatrical project, "Return to Never Land" was switched to the video schedule before being slotted back in the theatrical lineup. As was the case with "Toy Story 2" from Pixar in 1999, "The Tigger Movie" was put into production as a video premiere before the studio decided to take it out theatrically on Presidents Day weekend in 2000.
"'The Tigger Movie' was kind of an experiment to see what would happen," Disney TV president David Stainton said. "We found out some things that have really surprised us. It was a tremendous success with our core audience. It turns out that 4-year-olds to 8-year-olds and their moms and dads are out there, alive and dying for our stuff."
Word just came down last week that "The Jungle Book II," which is already deep into production, will be going theatrical in 2003, largely because of the international appeal of the original.
Meanwhile, Disney TV's "Cinderella II: Dreams Come True" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II" are premiering on video Feb. 26 and March 19, respectively.

Aparently Disney is really outdoing the sequal thing. They put out Peter Pan II and Cinderella II, now Jungle Book II? Are they out of original ideas, already? Ugh!

How many of us were going to go see a new Disney movie anyway? Pixar and Dreamworks are the only two animation companies with movies worth seeing anymore. "Monster's Inc." that was the cutest movie EVER! I loved that movie. It's Disney cut 'em some slack, at least they're nice to gay people.
XantheStar
February 21st, 2002, 07:52 PM
Not me, I've outlawed Disney from my being. Grr....Monster's INC wasn't even totally original. if you've ever seen the game and show Monster Rancher, that little green eyeball looks like Suezo form Monster rancher, just with arms, and feet instead of a tail, and horns. And Billie Crystal, or whoever, even kinda copied Scott McNeil...
I'm not going to see it, because Disney is a sell out. NO quality movies anymore, they've butchered and slashed them to pieces.

I will help you in it's defense. Disney targets Younger audiences, and I have actually found myself watching those "Ridicolous sequels" Some are really fun, some are just plain goofy. And some well... I put this those in a hole and secretly bury them and plant a tree over them.:D
I loved the Aladdin Series. I loved Beauty and the Beast, Mulan was great, Parent Trap(both of em), Monsters Inc. And many other's I can't think of. But by far my favorites were Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. *Hums songs*

some disney ones are OK. . . I loved "the Little Mermaid" when I was younger. . . still like to watch them sometimes (although it makes my boyfriend puke! LOL) . . . and I am DEFINATELY seeing Peter Pan II. . . it's a cheesy sequal, and I was raised on a steady diet of Mary Martin's Peter Pan and the actual book by JM Barrie. . . . so it will probably be sucky. . . I LOVED "Hook". . . . lol. . . . but as a raving mad lunatic Peter Pan fan, I have to see it. I wanted to see "Atlantis" but I didn't get the chance LOL

flar7 you liked TRON???????? Ugh!!!!!!!!! ok I like Wholly Moses so I guess I am not that far from the ugh movies myself. I like disney for the kids and I loved Fantasia 2000 they put out the same stuff everyone else does some good some bad. Sequals are a way of capitalizing on the original movies popularity it has been done for a long time. Jason and Freddie lived far longer than they should have! The horror genre is the biggest on doing sequels to thier stuff but they are not the only ones that sometimes take it just too far. Disney is not alone in that they are acompanied by writers that drag a set of books out way too long, comedians who tell the same set of jokes just too much, everyday people who do the same old same old day in and day out. It's everywhere. You want something better write it! Make millions and then share it and see what comes after it. They are a buisness in it to make money of course they are going to capitalize on anything that works. :)

Ok..NONE of you have mentioned the all time best (well..RECENT best) Disney Movie..."Beauty and the Beast". I think any true disney movie fan does not watch all the crappy sequels for home video...but the truth is..CHILDREN LOVE EM!
Disney movies appeal to the romance, the dreams, the sappiness in all of us. And we all become a kid again, while watching them.
Children have precious few things in life, which bring them as much joy as these "simple story lines" with happy outcomes, and miraculous creatures. Let them have their joy. Not Challenge them??? Are you aweare of all of the other merchandise surrounding walt disney???? Like for instance the disney book series (which I sold for many years, so I know how popular they are). Which encourage children to learn to read, through retelling of their favorite stories from their favorite movies. OH...and I won't even touch upon all of the pooh toys, and baby mickey toys out there aimed at child developement..challenging them to grow, as they play. And how about the disney channel shows, like "Out of the Box"? A great alternative to the dreaded "Barney" Phenomena.
I personally believe in the Walt Disney Miracle. I believe that watching his movies as a child, made me believe that dreams do come true, and that every princess deserves her prince, and that miracles can happen, and that good should always conquer evil. These are the messages inherant in Disney Movies, without Disney, these themes would not be so vividly brought into the conciousness of western culture. THAT, my friends, is why Disney has spread to every country around the globe :) Sequels, or No sequels.

Tron? u mean that old, old movie from back in the 70's.. it was the first movie to use CGI :D...
umm, or do u mean the TRON movie that's supposed to come out around now?
ok, disney, i don't watch disney ne more... nope...
umm, i must say i did before... but ur right they do greatly overdo sequels... everyone one of Disney's characters have been used in more than one movie, ... and i'm positive of that.... (except maybe the newer ones that didn't get a sequel yet) ...
as for Mulan... I LIKED MULAN :P ... lol
in case ur wondering it is optional to watch disney movies.... disney movies are for children, if u do not wish to watch em.. don't... i mean i was watching some commercial or something of that nature for Peter Pan 2... and he calls HOOK a 'black hearted scoundral" ... ok, it's not gonna be some bad mouthed big bad bloody swordfight, it's a commedy, it's funny, cute, ummm, any other words u can think of ... if u'd rather watch something like mission impossible 2 (now that's a sequel) , or something then do it... i know i did lol...
one movie i have to say i love is Beetlejuice... rofl....
nope wasn't disney definitely lol but it's a great movie

But my point is, Disney's movies are PURE fluff. What is it in our cculture that makes most companies produce movies with little or NO major plot? THere's the bad person, the misunderstood Hero/ine, the cute little sidekick...WHY can't Disney take that formula and switch it a little? Be creative? It's not like a small turn form the normal story is going to KILL them. In fact, I bet it would bring more people in...
..and the reason I hate disney is they give animation to kids. MAKE it for kids. When I went to see Princess Mononoke, rated PG-13, The theater was FILLED with little kids. I bet you their parents automatically thought that because it was animated, it was for little kids. It was pathetic...bah. Gonna go feed my birdies now. -.-

anime rules. For example, Cowboy Bebop is AWESOME. . . but it is SO not for kids. Wouldn't even be suitable for teenage boys. It's a good storyline, with lots of lines of remarks that'd be hard to pick up on if you were a little kid. :D I wuv it. And it's dubbed quite well, in fact, that's how I watch it. I havn't seen it in Japanese. It airs on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. . . "ADULT" aka as in not for kids hehe they even put up a warning. So they've translated it pretty darn well.
And if anyone's ever seen Akira (I've only seen the first half of it). . . :blushake: that's not for kids. I'm not sure it's even for adults!!

Myst, I didn't say animation was for adults. But mosrtt people in our country seem to think it IS. And that's because Disney's using it's same senseless formula to make movie after movie. What kid even KNOWS the original story of the Little Mermaid? Not one I know. The few good american adut movies out there are rare. The only ones I can think of are Titan A.E. Actually, Titan AE was not a very good movie. It rode on its
animation which was awesome. The story had a major flaw in it,
that it never explained. It was worth watching on video, but if I
had seen it in the theatres I would have been upset with it.
Now I dont mean that as bad as it sounds, I bought the darn

had this huge hole with no explanation for it. I bought it for the
animation and the first half of the story.:)

Sequels are not often great...I'm trying to think of one that I enjoyed....(draws a blank). Still...If it works for them, why not use it? In reality kids don't care, and it's easier to buy them a tape of something then take them to a theater often times.
