I'm really interested in the use of gemstones and crystals in spellwork and rituals, but it seems like it can be kind of expensive to obtain some of them, so if I decide to get some, I want to get the most important ones first. If you were going to have a sort of "kit" of must-have gems/crystals for magickal purposes, which ones would you include?

That all depends on what sort of magical needs will be anticipated. You can't very well say one stone, gem, crystal or mineral is more important than the others, although some may be more popular.

I honestly can't say quite yet. I have yet to do any spells, although it's something I want to try. Candle magick and gem/crystal magick interests me the most right now, so I think I want to give those a try. Let's see...things having to do with healing, feeling more energetic, improving psychic abilities, aiding in meditation, stones I might be able to use alongside tarot, since tarot is very important to me...honestly I'd be happy to hear about any of your favorites and what you use them for, just to give me some ideas. I've checked out some magickal correspondences for crystals on a few websites, but I always like to hear from people who have personal experiences with them, rather than just read them off a big chart.

Lapis lazuli is helpful to tarot readers. I usually wear my lapis rings while I'm working.

Tigers eye (yellow) is the stone I use the most. It holds energy well and is flexible in it's uses. Mostly I use it for exams of any kind, driving tests, anything to do with corage and intelligence. I also have a piece of it on my wand.

amethest (sp) - I know this one has got a bit of a rep for being "new age" but it's good for dream work, enhancing psychic power, meditation and healing.

Smokey quartz - I use this like a battery. I chage it and "program" it to fuel charm bag spells. It'll hold any energy. It has other uses, but it's late and my brain has turned to mush.

Malachite - This one's on the more expensive end of the scale (here at least) but it's a very powerful stone. A must for any collection. - Used for looking within, self improvement type stuff, power, protection, travel and beauty.

Lapis lazuli - For healing and spiritual work of any kind.

Moonstone - Helps with divination, like tarot reading, womens issues (helps with period pain), the moon etc.

Black obsidian - protection. I've used this to help with bullying in school and it worked fairly well.

Black onyx - emotional control.

Flourite - This is a great stone, seriously. Good for creative endevors, healing, learning and many other things that I can't seem to think of right now.

Alright then. Here's a list of some of my personal favorites and a brief explanation thereof. Keep in mind, this isn't all the information I have gathered on them, to which I haven't the energy to type up.

Moonstone: I tend to stick with rainbow moonstone, which I call the poor man's opal. Aligned with the moon and excellent for all matters pertaining to the moon's energies; dreams, divination, the unconcious mind, emotions, etc. I don't specifically align it with feminine concerns or matters, but then again I tend to keep a genderless approach in all things.

Tiger's Eye: This isn't my absolute favorite stone, but it is the one you will find me most often wearing. Aligned with Mars, it excels in matters of protection, courage, strength, success, prosperity, and wealth.

Opal: My very favorite stone of all time, to which I hope to someday own a black variety of (but from Nevada, theirs are the blackest of the black). Excellent for amplifying magical energies, past life regression (used it in my one and only past life recall spell I have written). Very enchanting, prismatic, and can be put to many uses because it contains such a wide array of colors.

Since I'm so fond of the number 3, I'll stop there.

lets not forget clear quartz crystal. it amplifies any other stone and is an all purpose stone.smoky quartz can do this.but clear is easier to obtain.

Black onyx- like mouse said. it is good for emotional control. also good for protection ,binding, etc. this is a stone that could be real nasty if misused.

red jasper- good for sending back negative energies back to their senders.

aquamarine-I use the low grade variety. helps against psychic defense.

lodestones-can be used to attract things to you or repel things away. hence they can be used for luck or protection.

blue goldstone can be used in helping with manifestations of spells.

magnetite-like a combo of blue goldstone and lodestone.this is a form of lodestone anyway.

Tiger's eye- what aidon said.

moonstone- generally what aidon said but it does bring out feminine aspects in men.

black obsidian- what Mouse said. also what helps in protection as well is
gold sheen obsidian. This is a black obsidian with a gold swirls in it.This specific stone aids in protection from sexual harassment. there are other uses . My website has it. Arrows made from obsidian are good for protection/defense spells. I've used both mahogany and black obsidian arrowheads

lapis- what Mouse and Amber Wind said. people with low blood pressure should avoid extensive use of it.

citrine- can be used in communication spells. I usually use artificially heated ones.

Thanks for all the info! I've found a few websites where I can order a lot of those stones for around $1 for a small one. I also already have some stones here, although I'm not sure what all of them are. I do know I have a beautiful tiger's eye (it's always been my favorite), some quartz and rose quartz, and some kind of agate. Anyone know how to tell if a stone is dyed?

to answer both Mouse's and Amber Wind's questions.
yes. Blue goldstone is a man made stone.I already stated on this thread the uses of it,but in addition to what i said. It is mainly made up of copper and glass and to a certain extent mica. one of the three known goldstone varieties. the other is orange/red and green. although it is called blue goldstone it has purple look to it. very pretty as the stone sparkles literally.

Also because it is man made it doesn`t mean that it is worthless in metaphysical use. Although some people will tell you otherwise. and that is a whole big debate.

I do know I have a beautiful tiger's eye (it's always been my favorite), some quartz and rose quartz, and some kind of agate. Anyone know how to tell if a stone is dyed?usually you can't. The most common dyed stone is the brazilian agate. These are those sliced agates you see. either in wind chimes or other decorations. blue howlite is another dyed stone. as howlite currently has only one color and that is white. dyed turquoise as well as the real thing. black onyx is dyed as well. Another dyed stone are magic stones. these are basically clear quartz that is fractured and dyed specific colors. The last two can be used in magic effectively. There are few other i can not think of right now. Also you gotta watch out for false products. People will try to sell you colored glass for certain types of quartz or obsidians. Although obsidian is volcanic glass they will sell you man made ones. People will try to sell you plasic pieces like amber and jet. Like one dealer told me some guy tried to sell him amber pyramids at a fractionally low price and he wouldn`t buy it as it might have a fake. also products are heat treated to change the color (and properties of a product) the most common is citrine. Natural citrine is pale yellow sometimes almost mistaking it as a clear quartz. Almost all citrine you will see on the market is the heat treated type. especially if you see a brown colored one
