My college roommate just had a baby 2 weeks ago. She has a little boy who is 4. He has cystic fibrosis and has had lots of health problems because of that. She is also not in the best of marriages ~ understatement. (:smash: to her husband). She just got inital test results back on her new daughter and she definitely carries a CF gene. Now the baby has to go through more tests to see if she has the other gene which will mean that she has cf too. The tests also show a problem with her thyroid.
My roommate is the sweetest nicest person I know-I love her lots. And she has had such a rough life and has very little support. I would appreciate any good thoughts you could send to her and her baby, Hope (get the name meaning?). Thanks.

aww!! good thoughts and energy for the kiddos, and the mom.
Although this might not be appropriate, I have a question. . . why is she having another child when she already passed down the disease to the first one? I mean no disrespect here, I just don't understand.

Chryssi1, as a person with CF, I totally understand. They are
making remarkable breakthroughs in the disease, like Pulmozyme,
that add years to estimated life span. You can tell her you spoke
with a 36-37 year old Cystic. She has my hopes, wishes and
prayers!:)

Thanks again- I know it is very hard on my friend and it helps her to know that there are people who are pulling for her.
Puma~ I understand where you are coming from. It is a question she gets a lot. She really has no one besides her son, who has a limited life expectancy. Her mother is an alcoholic, her dad has remarried and his 2nd wife has her own family, her husband is an a$$hole. The baby has a 1 in 4 chance to have cf, a 1 in 4 to have no genes for it and a 2 in 4 chance to be a carrier, which has no effect on health. Now that they found my friend's gene in the baby, it raises the chances of having cf, but she could also simply be a carrier. *fingers, toes, legs and eyes all crossed*
flar~ I cannot tell you how much your words mean to me. It really makes me so hopeful that they will find a cure or treatment that can help significantly. Her son is already showing signs of liver damage and has to be hooked up to a vibrating vest twice a day. The thumping wasn't getting enough of the mucous out of his lungs. but a cuter kid you wouldn't want to meet! I will tell her about you. :)
All of your thoughts are appreciated!!

okees. I figured it was something like that with the genetics. . . But thank you very much for answering my question.
I'm glad to hear they're getting cures out there!!!!
I'm sorry if it seemed a bit rued that I asked. I have a cousin who was born extremely deformed. If not for what happened to her (they think caused by "agent orange" or something like it, a chemical my uncle was exposed to in the millitary), she and I would probably be like sisters and look a great deal alike. But there's not a chance of that. Not because of CF, of course, but my aunt and uncle made the desicion not to have kids again, and I see so many examples where people just throw caution to the wind and keep trying. There's this wonderful kid who's famous for his poetry, and he very much seems a gift to the world, but it sickened me when I heard that he had something like 4 younger siblings who all died from a genetic disease. . . and their parents KEPT KNOWINGLY DOING THIS!! After the dr said they'd have NO children born without it! and this little boy is gonna die too soon, as well! And he's full of pain all the time! It just makes me quite angry to hear sometimes. But I do understand in your friend's case, and you can tell her she has my support. Give me her addy around the holidays, adn I'll send you both a card! ;) hehe and the kiddos, too. And the best wishes for her daughter (and son! and her!)
