View Full Version : I thought such ideas were 'legendary'...

I was quite shocked to have read a comment from another forum (this forum is about German Shepherd Dogs) on a thread that I started asking about people's opinions on PETA. I knew the responses weren't going to be friendly, but I never expected this popping up:
Remember GOD gave man diminion over the animals. But those new age hippies probably don't believe in GOD anyway. They are into L. Ron Hubbard and his "Scientology" I guess.
I felt slapped across my face... I mean, I've heard about pagans being told nasty things, but I never had the personal experience. It hurt. And it was not directed at ME...and the person who wrote this was someone I had taken to be very friendly. What's worse, she went on to insulting vegetarians (I'm vegan) and a quite a few agreed completely with her. It felt awkward to have read that...it's like you know burglary happens but you don't know that it actually exists until it happens to you.
*sighs* I'm so glad it was only an indirect, internet 'confrontation'...I don't know what I would've done if I met someone who thought that way head-on ...better start preparing myself for it!

Well, for one thing, the person referred to "new age hippies" and "scientologists" that "don't believe in God anyway". Thus the person wasn't really referring to Pagans. In my mind it's just one ignorant ranting person.
It happens. I see you aren't taking it personally and that's good :)

Well, i wouldn't make much of someone who can't spell the scripture their quoting ... even tho its spelled in the bible ... and has to assume a bunch of stuff to support his/her arugment. I mean, talk about bringing in outside information! If you need to assume stuff and use God to justify your actions, your own reasons for doing stuff must be pretty weak. And, just to rant, God didn't give him/her anything .... "he" wrote it down in a book. Anne Rice writes stuff down in books as well. So should people that prefer blood over water have doiminion over the rest of us? ehh. ignorance is stupidity.
Just cause i'm kinda all ... you know, ehh at this person, i'll state it some more: Your faith might tell you something about your actions, but your government and laws don't give a damn. You being general, of course.

I met someone that didn't realize I was Pagan, and while in my presence she said her family doesn't celebrate holidays like Valentine's Day because they are Pagan holidays.... I didn't say anything, but I looked at her strange and thought, "That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, Valentine's Day, isn't a Pagan holiday, and if it wasn't for mainstream society I wouldn't even bother with it". But just another, example of people’s ignorance.
You just got to ignore, those ignorant louts. :)

It's unfortunate but you meet people like that everywhere, in all religions, and walks of life. Ignorant people will be ignorant...no matter what they believe.

There's a site out there that labels John Travolta as 'hellbound' simply because of his Scientology beliefs. The site also lumps Catholics, Pagans, perverts, Mormons, etc. etc. as hellbound simply because of their beliefs. It seems the site author/designer hates everyone who doesn't attend Our Lady of Intolerance with him/her.

Funny address, though.

That sites sad ... it accuses things of being cults, while it in itself could be considered one, if it got followers.
I clicked on the Wiccan Pagan link ... and got a healthy dose of truth. Of course, the author mistook Satanist to mean devil worshiper, when it really means, basically, free thinker, at least to those that give half a damn enough to look up Satanism at a religious tolerance site. And also, his whole arugment is based on a book about magic, not Wicca, so his argument goes further down. Also, there is only one source. That says some stuff in itself. But who says Wiccans have to support their routes? Further down, when he bashes Catholics and Jews, he odviously isn't.
People like that annoy me.

O, and the auther of the book he referances, Aidan Kelly, also played a part in the publication of the Marrijuana Growers Insiders Guide, so you know how credible he must be.

Are you sure it's the same Aidan Kelly? There are apparently several, and the author of the marijuana book is referenced as Aidan Kelly, while the author of the Wiccan books is Aidan A. Kelly. There's also an Aidan Kelly who writes on Jewish subjects, and who may or may not be the same person. Furthermore, are you saying that anyone who deals with marijuana is automatically non-credible?
Actually, Kelly does have a rep for being a bit of a flake, but he is a very well-read academic flake with a number of writing credits other than the marijuana book. I'd say he's less credible because of his "conversion" from a Wiccan group pretending they were Golden Dawn to Roman Catholicism and back again, or because of some of his questionable research, rather than because of a marijuana book link.
