March 1st is Whuppity Scoorie Day in Lanark, Scotland (which, is where part of my family probably originated from back in the middle ages). This Joyful Holiday, for the Lanarkian Scots, marks the End of Winter, and the Start of Spring. It's origins are suspected to go back to ancient pagan celebrations. To read up on this joyful Scottish Holiday, visit this link, and scroll down to where it says "History"

Incidentally, i've heard mentioned in some Pagan books, that another Whuppity Scoorie tradition, is to tap on the Earth three times, to wake her from her Winter Slumber. In General, Whuppity Scoorie as the name seems to imply, is a noisy, rambunctious Holiday. So let your kids run wild, and make a bit of noise yourself. Spring is Here for the Scottish :)
